Pelagic (mid-water) trawling for pollock fish. This is a compilation of still shot and video edited to show a typical fishing experience on this type of commercial trawler in Alaska from start to finish. Unfortunately there is no audio. This video was made in 2006 on F/V Highland Light.
Pollock is a white fleshed fish used for fish sticks, fillet 'o fish, and also a main ingredient in surimi (artifical crab). Other byproducts include fishmeal (fertilizer and animal feed) and fish oil.

I was sitting there watching TV last year, dumpy and stressed...my businesses were declining, I had not done much with my life other than pay bills and raise my family---but I got super-excited as I watched what was happening on the Bering Sea Gold show produced by the Discovery Channel. There were guys just standing under their boats right off the coast of Nome Alaska literally 'sucking up gold'. I had to go do that. I was a certified diver, I thought I was pretty sharp and I knew I could figure it out. Well, it was a lot more dangerous than I ever imagined and after losing everything I had (and almost my life), I finally ran our boat aground at the end of the season. The story is not over yet...

The Bering Sea is a marginal sea of the Pacific Ocean. It comprises a deep water basin, which then rises through a narrow slope into the shallower water above the continental shelves.
The Bering Sea is separated from the Gulf of Alaska by the Alaska Peninsula. It covers over two million square kilometers, bordered on the east and northeast by Alaska, on the west by Russia's Siberia and Kamchatka Peninsula, on the south by the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands and on the far north by the Bering Strait, which connects the Bering Sea to the Arctic Ocean's Chukchi Sea. Bristol Bay is the portion of the Bering Sea which separates the Alaska Peninsula from mainland Alaska. The Bering Sea is named for Vitus Bering, a Danish navigator in Russian service, who in 1728 was the first European to systematically explore it, sailing from the Pacific Ocean northward to the Arctic Ocean.[citation needed]
The Bering Sea ecosystem includes resources within the jurisdiction of the United States and Russia, as well as international waters in the middle of the sea (known as the "Donut Hole"). The interaction between currents, sea ice, and weather make for a vigorous and productive ecosystem.

This is a compilation of still shot and video edited to show a typical fishing experience on this type of commercial trawler in Alaska from start to finish. Unfortunately there is no audio. This video was made in 2006 on F/V Highland Light. Pollock is a white fleshed fish used for fish sticks, fillet 'o fish, and also a main ingredient in surimi (artifical crab). Other byproducts include fishmeal (fertilizer and animal feed) and fish oil. -

I was sitting there watching TV last year, dumpy and stressed...my businesses were declining, I had not done much with my life other than pay bills and raise my family---but I got super-excited as I watched what was happening on the Bering Sea Gold show produced by the Discovery Channel. There were guys just standing under their boats right off the coast of Nome Alaska literally 'sucking up gold'. I had to go do that. I was a certified diver, I thought I was pretty sharp and I knew I could figure it out. Well, it was a lot more dangerous than I ever imagined and after losing everything I had (and almost my life), I finally ran our boat aground at the end of the season. The story is not over yet... -

This storm had winds gusting to 70 knots, pushing 30"-40" seas This 90' boat had nowhere to hide and it was too rough to get into the harbor on the Island.. They had been taking on water and thought they had the flooding under control. A steep wave hit them rolling the boat and shifting the water to one side, in turn rolling the vessel over and it was gone just like that. -

We are in the Bering Sea, up just north of St Paul Island.. This storm had winds gusting to 70 knots, pushing 30"-40" seas This 90' boat had nowhere to hide and it was too rough to get into the harbor on the Island.. They had been taking on water and thought they had the flooding under control. A steep wave hit them rolling the boat and shifting the water to one side, in turn rolling the vessel over and it was gone just like that.

We joined Seafari Fishing Charters for a half day fishing adventure off the coast of Rarotonga. As the boat cruises out to the deeper water drop off the view of the island is spectacular. Being a volcanic island we didn't have to go far as it drops off to deep water fairly close to shore.
It is a trolling set up as it was the large fish we were catching and it wasn't too long before we had our first bite. Everyone on board got to have a go bringing in the fish and a great thing to see was that even those who weren't very experienced with fishing had the chance to bring in a fish with the help and advice of the crew.

These yachts are built on a hull developed through years of building commercial fishing boats and crabbers designed to withstand the worst conditions of Alaska and the Bering Sea.
You have to see this boat to believe it!! Amazing easy-to-maintain technology, smart engineering, fantastic interior spaces and finishes, four water proof bulkheads, nine redundant touch screen computers around the boat that control all functions of the boat, etc., etc. THIS BOAT IS READY TO CRUISE THE WORLD WITH 5,000 GALS OF FUEL AND CONSUMPTION OF ONLY 10 GPH AT CRUISING SPEED!! Engines are C18's rated for continuous use at a very conservative 600 hp ( the same C18's in a Johnson 70 is rated at 1400 hp - for only 5 minutes!!)
Allseas Yachts was founded by Bernny Alls, an old timer in steel boats manufacturing. Benny began his career in boat building in 1975 and began building steel commercial fishing boats from 48' to 100 ft in length. He trained his son, Tim Alls, to weld and the two of them were soon building some of the most rugged steel commercial boats on the market.
Their clients needed boats that could endure the extreme weather of Alaska and the bearing Seas. Hulls needed to be tough enough to handle occasional rocks as well as large logs in the water. Stability was a huge factor so that these boats could fish in rough water weather which was so common in Southern Alaska.

Benny and Tim had to learn by experience the thickness of glass and window spacing's required to survive 75 foot waves that fishermen sometimes come upon unexpectedly. From the beginning of Spanish conquest in the New World, billions of dollars of silver, gold, emeralds and pearls were loaded in ships for the voyage to Spain. Hundreds of these ships were taken by pirates, and almost as many foundered on shoals or were sunk by storms.
Just as long as there have been ships carrying bounty and pirates raiding them, so too have their been shipwrecks and sunken treasure.
The Anegada Passage, a principal route between the Virgin Islands and the Leeward Islands into the Atlantic, is a treacherous channel lined with hidden reefs which has snared many a vessel over the years.
Today, people are still finding these shipwrecks, sometimes discovering treasure in the depths. For more than forty years, Bert Kilbride, based on Saba Rock off Virgin Gorda, has been diving in these waters. He has been designated Her Majesty's Official Receiver of Wrecks, and he knows, perhaps better than anyone, what lies beneath the surface.

When she saw how her lack of mathematical and technical savvy severely limited her options—both to rise in the military and to explore other careers—she returned to school with a new found determination to re-tool her brain to master the very subjects that had given her so much trouble throughout her entire life.

Her research focuses on the complex relationship between neuroscience and social behavior, and has been described as “revolutionary” by the Wall Street Journal. Oakley’s books have been praised by many leading researchers and writers, including Harvard’s Steven Pinker and E. O. Wilson, and National Book Award winner Joyce Carol Oates. Her book A Mind for Numbers: How to Excel in Math and Science (Even If You Flunked Algebra), will be published by Tarcher-Penguin on July 31, 2014.

She met her husband, Philip, when she was working at the South Pole Station in Antarctica. Early civilizations came from Russia into America by crossing the Bering Strait. They spread over North and South America forming cultural tribes. We refer to these original inhabitants of America as Native Americans.
Many, many, many years later, in the late 1400’s, explorers from Europe began journeying to the Americas. Europeans wanted to find an easy sailing route to Asia, so that they could trade spices and gold. in 1492, Christopher Columbus left Spain and sailed across the sea. When he hit land, he thought that he was in India. He called the people there “Indians”. He really had landed somewhere near the Bahamas. He called this land the New World. And so began the race against European countries to form colonies in America. Colonization is the process of establishing ownership of a land by creating colonies. Europeans wanted to colonize the New World in order to gain power and wealth. The first established colony in America was Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. It was settled by the English. in 1620, pilgrims sailed to America in the ship called the Mayflower. Pilgrims were Puritans, who were leaving England and seeking religious freedom. Soon, people from all over the world were seeking religious freedom in America. As these people settled in America, they took more and more land from Native Americans, who already lived there. And the late 1600’s these settlers began shipping slaves, from Africa, into America. For Europeans. America had now transitioned into a booming land with economic opportunities and freedoms. But settlers were still tied to English rule. And problems between the English and the colonists were growing. Soon American’s would begin their fight for freedom.

According to the recent single origin hypothesis, human ancestors originated in Africa, and eventually made their way out to the rest of the world. Analysis of the Y chromosome is one of the methods used in tracing the history of early humans. Thirteen genetic markers on the Y-chromosome differentiate populations of human beings.
It is believed, on the basis of genetic evidence, that all human beings in existence now descend from one single man who lived in Africa about 60,000 years ago.[2] The earliest groups of humans are believed to find their present-day descendants among the San people, a group that is now found in western southern Africa. The San are smaller than the Bantu. They have lighter skins, more tightly curled hair, and they share the epicanthal fold with the people of East Asia, such as the Chinese and Japanese.
Southern and eastern Africa are believed to originally have been populated by people akin to the San. Since that early time much of their range has been taken over by the Bantu. Skeletal remains of these ancestral people are found in Paleolithic sites in Somalia and Ethiopia. There are also peoples in east Africa today who speak substantially different languages that nevertheless share the archaic characteristics of the San language, its distinctive repertoire of click and pop sounds. These are the only languages in the entire world that use these sounds in speech.
As humans migrated out of Africa, they all carried a genetic feature on the Y chromosome known as M168.[3]
The first wave of migration out of Africa stayed close to the oceans shores, tracing a band along the coastal areas of the Indian Ocean including parts of the Arabian Peninsula, the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent and into South East Asia, down into what is now Indonesia, and eventually reaching Australia. This branch of the human family developed a new marker, M130.
This first wave appears to have left dark-skinned people along its path, including isolated groups of dark-skinned people in south east Asia such as the aboriginal population of the Andaman Islands (around 400 km off the west coast of Thailand), the Semang of Malaysia, and the Aeta of the Philippines.[4]
The second wave of migration took a more northerly course, splitting somewhere in the area around what is now called Syria to sweep to interior Asia, where it split several more times in Central Asia, north of Afghanistan. The lineages that flowed into Central Asia carry M9. Other markers were added after the migration paths went on in several different directions from Central Asia.
From Central Asia, a small group migrated towards the northeast, following reindeer. These were the Chukchi people, a few of whom still live a nomadic lifestyle today. An even smaller group, estimated at no more than 20 Chukchis, crossed what is now the Bering Sea approximately 13,000 years ago during the last glacial period, and migrated into North America. They are the ancestors of Native Americans, and 800 years later, they had reached as far as South America.
The African diaspora is believed to have begun some 50,000 years ago, long enough for many changes to have occurred in humans remaining in Africa. The genetic trends reported involve humans who left Africa, and their genetic histories. The diversity found outside of Africa may well have been accentuated since populations migrating to new hunting grounds would rarely have had individuals moving backwards into previously settled regions. But within Africa, isolation would have been geographically aided primarily by the Sahara Desert, leaving people in areas not separated by the desert to travel and migrate relatively freely.
