Iraqi security forces recaptured a large part of the city of Ramadi this week in one of their most significant military victories over the Islamic State (IS) to date.
Backed by warplanes from the US-led coalition, Baghdad's troops have been fighting to secure territory around Ramadi, the capital of Iraq’s vast western province of Anbar, since it fell to IS in May.
VICE News embedded with Iraq’s Special Operations Forces, also known as the Golden Division, who have been leading operations to recapture the city.

Iraqi Special Forces and Popular Mobiliziation Units managed it to retake the strategic town of Ramadi from ISIS after heavy clashes and urban fighting backed by coalition airstrikes.
While the initial assault on the city by ISOF and IPMF units only took about 6 days to archive victory the surrounding areas saw weeks of fighting in order to prepare the launch of the operation.
Iraqi goverment loyalist troops now aim for the citys of Fallujah and Mosul that are still under the grips of ISIS militants.

In early March, while the world was watching Iraqi government forces advance on the Islamic State (IS) in Tikrit, IS was launching a series of assaults on what little remains of the Government-held parts of the provincial capital, Ramadi, which has been under siege for over a year.
On the morning of 11 March alone — the first day VICE News spent in Ramadi — nearly two dozen IS car bombs were detonated, killing 10 and injuring 60.
In a series of interviews, Iraqi officials told VICE News that they fear Islamic State fighters will overrun what remains of Government-held Ramadi if the US did not intervene with air support. According to police in Ramadi, more than 2,000 officers have been killed since January 2014, when the Islamic State — then known mainly as ISIS or ISIL — first announced its presence in the city.
VICE News spent three days in Ramadi documenting civilian life and interviewing Iraqi officials, as the town remains under siege from the Islamic State.

U.S. airstrikes in recent days killed an estimated 350 Islamic State fighters held up in the western Iraqi city of Ramadi, an American military spokesman said today, suggesting the extremists lost as much as half of their defending force. Col. Steve Warren, spokesman for the U.S. military command in Baghdad, told reporters at the Pentagon that there had been an estimated 600 to 1,000 Islamic State fighters inside Ramadi, which the extremist group captured in May. Despite this depletion of Islamic State forces, U.S. officials are reluctant to predict how long it will take to reclaim the city, which is the capital of Anbar province and a key to the Iraqi government's hopes of restoring its borders.
Defense Secretary Ash Carter, speaking separately today, said Iraqi progress in retaking Ramadi has been disappointingly slow. "I am certain it will fall, and we will assist in the making of it fall," Carter said of Ramadi. He added that the U.S. would be willing to commit U.S. Army Apache attack helicopters to the battle for Ramadi, if the Iraqi government requests it and if it would "make a strategically decisive difference."
Asked about that comment later, Warren said, "Apache helicopters are ready," if Washington and Baghdad give the go-ahead. U.S. officials have frequently expressed frustration with how long it has taken the Iraqi army and other security forces to press an offensive in Ramadi, but in recent days, they have pointed to important battlefield progress. On Tuesday, Iraqi forces seized an Islamic State operations center in the strategic Tamim neighborhood on the outskirts of the city.
With approximately 10,000 troops, including federal police, committed to the fight for Ramadi, the Iraqis vastly outnumber the defenders. Iraqi Maj Gen. Ismail al-Mahlawi, head of military operations in Anbar province, said there are approximately 300 Islamic State fighters trapped in the center of Ramadi, which lies on the Euphrates River.

Ramadi (Arabic: الرمادي; BGN: Ar Ramādī) is a city in central Iraq, about 110 kilometers (68 mi) west of Baghdad. It is the capital of Al Anbar Governorate. The city outstretched to a distance of more than 60 kilometers on the Euphrates, the largest city in Al-Anbar.
Ramadi's population has been stated as 444,582 according to UN data from 2003. and 483,209 according to UN from 2004.
However, according to the former regime there are about 700,000 inhabitants. Although there was a large Jewish community into the twentieth century, in the 21st century all of the inhabitants of the city are Sunni Muslims from the Dulaim tribe.
Ramadi is located in a fertile, irrigated, alluvial plain, within Iraq's Sunni Triangle. It was founded in 1869 under the Ottoman Empire. The main purpose of the city was to give the Ottomans a focal point to communicate and control the Dulaim tribe of the region.
During the Mesopotamian Campaign of World War I, British forces under Lieutenant General Frederick Stanley Maude took Ramadi. In November 1917, British forces fought what was left of the Ottoman forces there. Sir Maude died soon after Ramadi was taken.

While the initial assault on the city by ISOF and IPMF units only took about 6 days to archive victory the surrounding areas saw weeks of fighting in order to prepare the launch of the operation. Iraqi goverment loyalist troops now aim for the citys of Fallujah and Mosul that are still under the grips of ISIS militants. -

The Battle of Ramadi, also called the Fall of Ramadi, in 2014 and 2015 was part of an ISIL offensive to capture all of the Anbar Province. Ramadi was one of the Iraqi government's last strongholds in Anbar, after its success in a previous campaign. The battle began in October 2014 and drew to a close as Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) insurgents seized hold of government buildings on 14 May 2015. On 17 May, it was reported that the Iraqi Army and special forces fled the city, with 500 civilians and security personnel dead. While the initial assault on the city by ISOF and IPMF units only took about 6 days to archive victory the surrounding areas saw weeks of fighting in order to prepare the launch of the operation.

U.S. airstrikes in recent days killed an estimated 350 Islamic State fighters held up in the western Iraqi city of Ramadi, an American military spokesman said today, suggesting the extremists lost as much as half of their defending force. Col. Steve Warren, spokesman for the U.S. military command in Baghdad, told reporters at the Pentagon that there had been an estimated 600 to 1,000 Islamic State fighters inside Ramadi, which the extremist group captured in May. Despite this depletion of Islamic State forces, U.S. officials are reluctant to predict how long it will take to reclaim the city, which is the capital of Anbar province and a key to the Iraqi government's hopes of restoring its borders.
Defense Secretary Ash Carter, speaking separately today, said Iraqi progress in retaking Ramadi has been disappointingly slow. "I am certain it will fall, and we will assist in the making of it fall," Carter said of Ramadi. He added that the U.S. would be willing to commit U.S. Army Apache attack helicopters to the battle for Ramadi, if the Iraqi government requests it and if it would "make a strategically decisive difference."
Asked about that comment later, Warren said, "Apache helicopters are ready," if Washington and Baghdad give the go-ahead. U.S. officials have frequently expressed frustration with how long it has taken the Iraqi army and other security forces to press an offensive in Ramadi, but in recent days, they have pointed to important battlefield progress. On Tuesday, Iraqi forces seized an Islamic State operations center in the strategic Tamim neighborhood on the outskirts of the city.
With approximately 10,000 troops, including federal police, committed to the fight for Ramadi, the Iraqis vastly outnumber the defenders. Iraqi Maj Gen. Ismail al-Mahlawi, head of military operations in Anbar province, said there are approximately 300 Islamic State fighters trapped in the center of Ramadi, which lies on the Euphrates River.

Multiple bomb explosions hit 2 provinces in Iraq, claiming at least 34 lives
Three car bomb blasts left 25 people dead in the Kurdish-controlled town of Qara Tapah in Diyala province. Most of the victims were Peshmerga veterans. Several others were injured. Meanwhile, eight people lost their lives in another blast in Baquba in the same province. Elsewhere in the western Anbar province, a roadside bomb killed a police chief who was leading operations against the ISIL militants. Officials say Major General Ahmed Saddag was killed when a blast hit his convoy near the provincial capital of Ramadi. Four police officers were also wounded. -

It’s a pretty sizeable lake so tour guides offer to boat tourists around or across the lake for a few dollars. You can enjoy the breeze and the sway of the waves.
Mr. Tu, age 28, sold USD $3 tickets for a quick trip around the lake, but one of his competitors sold tickets for just USD $1.50 so Mr. Tu was losing business to his competitor.
After one night of heavy drinking, Mr. Tu and his friend set his competitor’s boat on fire and nearly burned down the dock as well.
Police arrested the two men and they’ve both been slapped with jail time. Mr. Tu was given a 3 year and 2 month sentence and his accomplice was sentenced to a year and 10 months.
Mr. Tu’s competitor is upset, but she’s also mentioned that she did just buy insurance for her boat so she hasn’t lost everything. She’s just wondering if she should go back into the boating business again or maybe think about opening a small cafe.
The boating business seems surprisingly dangerous.

Since the easing of restrictions on businesses operating in Cuba last month, the home-sharing website Airbnb has become the country's site's fastest-growing market.
As a California-based company, the popular service had earlier been forced to block access for American and European users alike.
Now, Americans can book rooms by attesting that they qualify under one of the 12 categories allowed by the US administration.
In the Pinar del Rio town of Vinales, on the country's western tip, almost every other house has been turned into a bed and breakfast.
The region is a hotspot for tourists because of its natural beauty and tobacco plantations.
"We hear that a lot of Americans want to come to our country, so we are expanding," Daniel Sanchez, a loca resident, told Al Jazeera.
Daniel, like many throughout Cuba, now relies on Airbnb to connect them with potential American and European customers.
"We want to receive them the best way possible," he said.
Cubans like Sanchez, encouraged by the possibility of earning extra income, are hoping that the relaxation of travel restrictions will be more than a short-lived honeymoon.
However, since the easing of restrictions on travel to Cuba is the prerogative of the US president, the next US leader may turn out to be not as keen on opening up to Cuba as Barack Obama.
This uncertainty about the future has spawned a "do-or-die" attitude towards American tourists.
"I can go to Paris and see the Eiffel Tower and, in 20 years, everything will be the same, but coming here in 20 years won't be the same," Aaron Levy, an American tourist, told Al Jazeera.

It is the missile that never misses - and could be the future of combat.
This incredible video shows the latest test firings of the aptly named Brimstone missile.
Launched from a Reaper drone, it shows nine attempt to hit a car moving at 90mph - and nine direct hits.
The tests, conducted at the US Naval Air Weapons Station in China Lake, California, in December last year show the Brimstone-equipped MQ-9 Reaper Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) in action.
The missile scored nine direct hits against stationary and maneuvering targets traveling at speeds as fast as 70 MPH, while launching from up to 7 miles away at altitudes as high as 20,000 feet.
The tests were designed to show how Brimstone's dual mode Semi-Active Laser and Active mmW radar seekers work in tandem to ensure direct hits, even against high speed and maneuvering targets.
MBDA, the firm which makes the missile, says that when launched from a drone, 'Brimstone can now provide reaper crews with a weapon that reduces collateral damage risk and demonstrates first pass, single shot lethality against high speed maneuvering targets on land and at sea and in complex environments.'
