Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) is a species of pine that is native to Eurasia, ranging from Western Europe to Eastern Siberia, south to the Caucasus Mountains and Anatolia, and north to well inside the Arctic Circle in Scandinavia. In the north of its range, it occurs from sea level to 1,000 m, while in the south of its range it is a high altitude mountain tree, growing at 1,200–2,600 metres (3,900–8,500 ft) altitude. It is readily identified by its combination of fairly short, blue-green leaves and orange-red bark.
Pinus sylvestris is an evergreen coniferous tree growing up to 35 m in height and 1 m trunk diameter when mature, exceptionally over 45 metres (148 ft) tall and 1.7 metres (5 ft 7 in) trunk diameter on very productive sites, the tallest on record being a more than 210-year-old tree growing in Estonia which stands at 46.6 metres (153 ft). The bark is thick, scaly dark grey-brown on the lower trunk, and thin, flaky and orange on the upper trunk and branches. The habit of the mature tree is distinctive due to its long, bare and straight trunk topped by a rounded or flat-topped mass of foliage. The lifespan is normally 150–300 years, with the oldest recorded specimens in Lapland, Northern Finland over 760 years.
The South Downs are a range of chalk hills that extends for about 260 square miles (670 km2) across the south-eastern coastal counties of England from the Itchen Valley of Hampshire in the west to Beachy Head, near Eastbourne, East Sussex, in the east. It is bounded on its northern side by a steep escarpment, from whose crest there are extensive views northwards across the Weald. The South Downs National Park forms a much larger area than the chalk range of the South Downs and includes large parts of the Weald.
The South Downs are characterised by rolling chalk downland with close-cropped turf and dry valleys, and are recognised as one of the most important chalk landscapes in England. The range is one of the four main areas of chalk downland in southern England.
The South Downs are relatively unpopulated compared to South East England as a whole, although in Sussex there has been large-scale urban encroachment onto the chalk downland by major seaside resorts, including most notably Brighton and Hove.

El trabajo en Pinus sylvestris es muy diferente al de los pinus thunberguii. Hoy hacemos el primer trabajo del año, cortamos velas y explicamos porqué. Siempre en pinos sanos y fuertes.
This is the story of the first styling of Diederick his tall formal upright Pinus sylvestris Yamadori. It is a tree with an unusually long and old half broken off first branch that makes it a uniquely shaped pre-Bonsai! We had a lot of fun styling it and I hope you will enjoy this video as well?! On this live stream, we get back to our bonsai roots, breaking down traditional Japanese design with an amazing, raw Scots pine. We focus on setting the primary structure for an informal upright design and handling big cuts to heal effectively on all single flush, short-needled pines. This tree was acquired last year by Rene and has already been in development for many years. We wanted to restyle the tree to give it a more dramatic appearance. After a discussion with Marc Noelanders last fall, we developed an idea for the tree. Now the idea becomes reality... have fun watching!
The video explains how to grow the Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris), which is a great European species and are excellent bonsai trees for beginners.

Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) is an evergreen conifer native to northern Europe, and is one of just three conifers native to the UK. It thrives in heathland and is widely planted for timber, but is also found in abundance in the Caledonian Forest in the Scottish Highlands - the only truly native pine forest in the UK.
