Flautist Holly Cook performs Coltrane (1981) by David Heath (b. 1956 ) was born in Manchester and began composing in 1978. He trained as a flautist at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and has played on many TV and film soundtracks, including James Bond and Inspector Morse. His early works, including Coltrane, are based on modern jazz, and later works incorporating funk rhythms and minimalist techniques. Coltrane was dedicated to James Galway. As the title suggests, the piece is inspired by the music of the jazz musician John Coltrane. In the first section the harmony is based on diminished and pentatonic chords. The second half of the work conveys a different mood and is based upon Indian scales and an Indian rhythm called the Tehi. In a masterclass given at Trinity College of Music in March 2007, Dave Heath described how to connect with the musical atmosphere of the piece, as if Coltrane were freely improvising in a meditative state of mind.

Holly Cook has recently graduated with a Masters degree in performance at Trinity College of Music, where she was awarded a Leverhulme Orchestral Mentorship Award for study. Holly studied flute with Anna Noakes and ethnic flutes with Andy Findon and Tony Hinnigan. Her specialist area of study was ethnic flute music, upon which she wrote a dissertation and made a recording of a contemporary Japanese influenced piece of flute music, gaining a distinction for this. As part of her training, Holly undertook a Mentor Scheme placement with the BBC Concert Orchestra, with Ileana Ruheman. Holly has recently been featured in Muso magazine in an interview as a member of the contemporary flute octet Ayre Flutes. As a soloist, Holly has given many recital performances around London and the UK, including at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Cheltenham Town Hall and Royal Tunbridge Wells. Recent concerto performances include the Mozart Flute Concerto in D, Bach Brandenburg Concerto 5 and Nielsen Concerto with the Stamford Chamber Orchestra. Holly was awarded a Fellowship of Trinity College London in 2007 and a Licentiate of Trinity College London in flute teaching in 2008.

Holly Cook ~ Flute, Harriet Murray ~ Violin, Kate Musker ~ Viola, Alice Murray ~ Cello perform the 3rd movement 'Rondo' of The Flute Quartet in D Major K.V. 285 (1777) is the most well-known of the four flute quartets by W.A. Mozart. He wrote the quartet whilst living in Mannheim working with the court orchestra. He embarked upon a commission from Ferdinand De Jean for three short, easy concertos, and a pair of quartets for the flute. De Jean was a Dutch doctor, and amateur flautist, and was offering Mozart 200 gulden for the commission money which was much needed as the Mozart family who had to fulfil duties as servants in order to live. A well known flautist in the Mannheim court orchestra, Johann Baptist Wendling had helped Mozart to get the commission, and would play parts of it while it was being composed. However, Mozart found the commission difficult to progress with. The quartet was completed on December 25th 1777. Mozart did not complete the full commission. De Jean received two flute quartets, the G Major Flute Concerto (K.313), the Andante in C Major (K.315) which was only a single movement. The D Major Flute Concerto (K.314) was transcribed from the earlier C Major Oboe Concerto. These works, all of remarkable beauty, are part of the standard flute repertoire today. They display the influence of Mozarts operatic style within his instrumental writing.

A flautist or flutist is a musician who plays an instrument in the flute family.
The choice of "flautist" (from the Italian flautista, from flauto, and adopted due to eighteenth century Italian influence) versus "flutist" is a source of dispute among players of the instrument. "Flutist" is the earlier term in the English language, dating from at least 1603 (the earliest quote cited by the Oxford English Dictionary), while "flautist" is not recorded before 1860, when it was used by Nathaniel Hawthorne in The Marble Faun. While the print version of the OED does not indicate any regional preference for either form, the online Compact OED characterizes "flutist" as an American usage.
Richard Rockstro, in his three-volume treatise The Flute written in England in 1890, uses "flute-player." He also uses "fluteist" and the less popular "flutomater".
The American player and writer Nancy Toff, in her The Flute Book, devotes more than a page to the subject, commenting that she is asked "Are you a flutist or a flautist?" on a weekly basis. She prefers "flutist": "Ascribe my insistence either to a modest lack of pretension or to etymological evidence; the result is the same." Toff, who is also an editor for Oxford University Press, describes in some detail the etymology of words for "flute," comparing OED, Fowler's Modern English Usage, Evans' Dictionary of Contemporary American Usage, and Copperud's American Usage and Style: The Consensus before arriving at her conclusion: "I play the flute, not the flaut; therefore I am a flutist not a flautist.

African Americans make up the single largest racial minority in the United States. Most African Americans are of West and Central African descent and are descendants of enslaved Africans within the boundaries of the present United States. However, some immigrants from African, Caribbean, Central American or South American nations, or their descendants, may be identified or self-identify with the term.
African-American history starts in the 16th century with African slaves who quickly rose up against the Spanish explorer Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón and progresses to the present day, with Barack Obama as the 44th and current President of the United States. Between those landmarks there have been events and issues, both resolved and ongoing, including slavery, racism, Reconstruction, development of the African-American community, participation in the great military conflicts of the United States, racial segregation, and the Civil Rights Movement.

He trained as a flautist at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and has played on many TV and film soundtracks, including James Bond and Inspector Morse. His early works, including Coltrane, are based on modern jazz, and later works incorporating funk rhythms and minimalist techniques. Coltrane was dedicated to James Galway. As the title suggests, the piece is inspired by the music of the jazz musician John Coltrane. In the first section the harmony is based on diminished and pentatonic chords. Flautist Holly Cook performs Coltrane (1981) by David Heath (b. 1956 ) was born in Manchester and began composing in 1978. He trained as a flautist at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and has played on many TV and film soundtracks, including James Bond and Inspector Morse. His early works, including Coltrane, are based on modern jazz, and later works incorporating funk rhythms and minimalist techniques. Coltrane was dedicated to James Galway. As the title suggests, the piece is inspired by the music of the jazz musician John Coltrane. In the first section the harmony is based on diminished and pentatonic chords. The second half of the work conveys a different mood and is based upon Indian scales and an Indian rhythm called the Tehi. In a masterclass given at Trinity College of Music in March 2007, Dave Heath described how to connect with the musical atmosphere of the piece, as if Coltrane were freely improvising in a meditative state of mind.

Holly Cook has recently graduated with a Masters degree in performance at Trinity College of Music, where she was awarded a Leverhulme Orchestral Mentorship Award for study. Holly studied flute with Anna Noakes and ethnic flutes with Andy Findon and Tony Hinnigan. Her specialist area of study was ethnic flute music, upon which she wrote a dissertation and made a recording of a contemporary Japanese influenced piece of flute music, gaining a distinction for this. As part of her training, Holly undertook a Mentor Scheme placement with the BBC Concert Orchestra, with Ileana Ruheman. Holly has recently been featured in Muso magazine in an interview as a member of the contemporary flute octet Ayre Flutes. As a soloist, Holly has given many recital performances around London and the UK, including at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Cheltenham Town Hall and Royal Tunbridge Wells. Recent concerto performances include the Mozart Flute Concerto in D, Bach Brandenburg Concerto 5 and Nielsen Concerto with the Stamford Chamber Orchestra. Holly was awarded a Fellowship of Trinity College London in 2007 and a Licentiate of Trinity College London in flute teaching in 2008.

Holly Cook ~ Flute, Harriet Murray ~ Violin, Kate Musker ~ Viola, Alice Murray ~ Cello perform the 3rd movement 'Rondo' of The Flute Quartet in D Major K.V. 285 (1777) is the most well-known of the four flute quartets by W.A. Mozart. He wrote the quartet whilst living in Mannheim working with the court orchestra. He embarked upon a commission from Ferdinand De Jean for three short, easy concertos, and a pair of quartets for the flute. De Jean was a Dutch doctor, and amateur flautist, and was offering Mozart 200 gulden for the commission money which was much needed as the Mozart family who had to fulfil duties as servants in order to live. A well known flautist in the Mannheim court orchestra, Johann Baptist Wendling had helped Mozart to get the commission, and would play parts of it while it was being composed. However, Mozart found the commission difficult to progress with. The quartet was completed on December 25th 1777. Mozart did not complete the full commission. De Jean received two flute quartets, the G Major Flute Concerto (K.313), the Andante in C Major (K.315) which was only a single movement. The D Major Flute Concerto (K.314) was transcribed from the earlier C Major Oboe Concerto. These works, all of remarkable beauty, are part of the standard flute repertoire today. They display the influence of Mozarts operatic style within his instrumental writing.
