6. Atacama Desert
Excluding the poles of our planet, the Atacama Desert is the driest place on Earth. One of the ways people defines a desert is to look at the region's average rainfall. Experts consider an area a desert if it receives less than 25 centimeters of rain annually. The Atacama Desert receives less than one-tenth of a centimeter of rain each year. Some regions of the area haven’t seen rain in hundreds of years. The area saw an unprecedented 31 inches of snow when an Antarctic cold front made its way through the area in July 2011. The desert covers a 600-mile strip of land that stretches from the southern border of Peru up to the northern parts of Chile.
5. Aconcagua
While ascending this mountaintop is not considered technically difficult when compared to other mountains like Mount Everest, Aconcagua is still well respected in the climbing world. The summit of the mountain is 22,841 above sea level, making it the highest mountain and, by extension, the tallest point outside of Asia. While the way to the top is nothing more than a walk, the extremely high altitude of the mountain makes the climb difficult and potentially dangerous. Of the 3,500 or so people that attempt the treck annually, there are always those that underestimate the climb and pay for it with their lives. This wonder formed when the Nazca Plate and the South American Plate collided during the Andean orogeny.
4. Salar de Uyuni
You have most likely seen the Salar de Uyuni on TV without even realizing it. Located in Bolivia, Salar De Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat and is a sought out destination for those making car commercials. While it is best to film commercials in the area during the dry season from April to October, it is perhaps more visually stunning to visit the flat in the wet season when the rain changes the ground into the world’s largest mirror. Spanish cinematographer Enrique Pacheco shot a stunning time-lapse video of the area last year titled “Reflections from Uyuni.” The video does a fantastic job of exploring the fabulous reflections that the salt flats produce.
3. The Marble Chapel
For centuries no one knew how the Marble Caves of Chile retained their state of incredible beauty and extravagance, so they came up with their own legends. The Maori people explained that the multi-colored stones and giant crystals found within the cave were the result of a mythological canoe wreck. Irish stories claim that a massive worldwide quarrel amongst gods led to the formation of the natural wonder. Scientists were eventually able to come up with a factually based explanation. The progression of time combined with wave erosion have shaped the caves into their current state. The reflective blue-green water of Carrera Lake, which the Marble Caves lie in, substantially enhances the amazing colors found in the cave.
2. Ojos del Salado
At 22,615 feet this massive stratovolcano is the highest active volcano in the world and barely trails the Aconcagua peak for being the highest point in the western hemisphere. Luckily this massive volcano hasn’t erupted for roughly 1300 years. The volcano’s easy ascent has made it an attractive destination to set altitude records in vehicles. In April of 2015 Chilean Gianfranco Bianchi set the altitude record for motorbikes when he went 21,233 feet up the mountain on a Suzuki RMZ 450. This region also contains the world’s highest lake regarding elevation. The Ojos del Salado Pool lies 20,997 feet high on the eastern side of the wonder.
1. Iguassu Falls
Visiting these waterfalls located on the border of Argentina and Brazil will leave you with drop jaw syndrome. Not only are these falls the largest system of waterfalls in the world, but they are also visually stunning. You have to visit this site to understand its majesty, using words and seeing pictures is futile. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt put it best when she said, “Poor Niagara,” upon first seeing Iguazu Falls. Iguazu Falls retain this reputation over its rival in the U.S. to this day. While Niagara Falls has seen casinos and Starbucks crop up around it, Iguazu Falls remains a spot surrounded totally by nature. Clearly, Niagara Falls has to stop trying so hard.

#10 … Giant Anteater -- The name gives away its diet, although the Giant Anteater doesn’t necessarily eat giant ants. Their long tongue goes all the way down the snout and can suck up row upon row of ants at a time. Giant Anteaters are native to South and Central America, and grow to roughly the size of your average German Shepherd dog.
#9 … American Crocodile -- It plays no favorites between North and South America,so you know. It can be found all the way from southern Florida to Ecuador. This is one of the larger crocodile species, and usually grows to 16 feet long and weighs nearly 900 pounds. You’ll often see these animals congregating near bridges, hoping tourists will toss them some food. Or hoping the tourists toss themselves in as food.
#8 … Pacu (pah-koo) Fish -- Native to South American waters, the Pacu Fish is best known for sporting a set of human-like teeth. Just take a look at those choppers, pretty intimidating. Local fishermen refer to it as the “ball cutter” because they’re afraid those teeth might, well … try to steal the family jewels.
#7 … Andean Condor (an-dee-un) -- With 10-foot wingspan , this is the largest flying bird in the world. They’re found in the mountainous areas of western South America at elevations up to 18,000 feet. Updrafts at those extreme altitudes allow the birds to travel great distances with only an occasional flap of their wings.
#6 … The Living Rock -- Believe it or not, these are not rocks … but living, breathing organisms. Their appearance allows them to avoid predators by blending into the environment, most often beaches in Chile. Each of these creatures possess both male and female organs and are able to breed individually. Sounds like a party. Can you smell what the Living Rock is cooking?
#5 … Amazon Horned Frog -- found in freshwater marshes of the Amazon rainforest, they’re just small enough to sit on a tea saucer with their limbs just barely over the rim. They use their small size to their advantage, hiding between shrubbery until they see jump out and feast … but only on something smaller than themselves!
#4 … Venezuelan Poodle Moth -- This is a relatively new species of moth discovered in Venezuela in 2009. The insect’s appearance is so bizarre that people thought the discovery was a hoax, before the creature’s existence was confirmed. Relatively little is still known about this species.
#3 … Titanoboa (ti-tan-o-bo-ah)-- Or, ‘titanic boa’. In 2009, the fossilized remains gigantic prehistoric snakes were found in the tropics of Northern Colombia. Dating back nearly 60 million years, the fossils revealed a snake that measured 50 feet long and weighed more than a ton. The evidence suggests it would have resembled the modern-day boa constrictor but would’ve spent more time in the water like an anaconda.
#2 … Panda Ant -- Found in Chile, this does indeed look like an ant. But this insect actually belongs to the Mutillidae (mew-til-i-dee), which is a family of over 3,000 species of wasps. The females are wingless and are easily mistaken for large, hairy ants. When they turn up with this distinctive black-and-white coloring, they earn the title of Panda Ant -- although they’re neither. It’s still a wasp and is known to have a painful sting.
#1 … In 2016, construction workers in Brazil found a huge snake when it slithered out of a cave while crews were building a dam. The predator appeared after a rigged explosion went off. The massive reptile was identified as an anaconda and said to measure 32 feet long and weighed nearly half a ton. The animal was killed at the scene. Had it lived, it might have been crowned the largest snake ever.

South America
South America is a continent located in the Western Hemisphere, mostly in the Southern Hemisphere, with a relatively small portion in the Northern Hemisphere. It is also considered as a subcontinent of the Americas, which is the model used in Spanish-speaking nations and most of South America.
It is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean; North America and the Caribbean Sea lie to the northwest. It includes twelve sovereign states – Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela – and two non-sovereign areas – French Guiana, an overseas department of France, and the Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory (though disputed by Argentina). In addition to this, the ABC islands of the Netherlands and Trinidad and Tobago may also be considered part of South America.
South America has an area of 17,840,000 square kilometers (6,890,000 sq mi). Its population as of 2005 has been estimated at more than 371,090,000. South America ranks fourth in area (after Asia, Africa, and North America) and fifth in population (after Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America). The most populous countries are Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Venezuela and Peru.

6. Atacama Desert
Excluding the poles of our planet, the Atacama Desert is the driest place on Earth. One of the ways people defines a desert is to look at the region's average rainfall. Experts consider an area a desert if it receives less than 25 centimeters of rain annually. The Atacama Desert receives less than one-tenth of a centimeter of rain each year. Some regions of the area haven’t seen rain in hundreds of years. The area saw an unprecedented 31 inches of snow when an Antarctic cold front made its way through the area in July 2011. The desert covers a 600-mile strip of land that stretches from the southern border of Peru up to the northern parts of Chile.
5. Aconcagua
While ascending this mountaintop is not considered technically difficult when compared to other mountains like Mount Everest, Aconcagua is still well respected in the climbing world. The summit of the mountain is 22,841 above sea level, making it the highest mountain and, by extension, the tallest point outside of Asia. While the way to the top is nothing more than a walk, the extremely high altitude of the mountain makes the climb difficult and potentially dangerous. Of the 3,500 or so people that attempt the treck annually, there are always those that underestimate the climb and pay for it with their lives. This wonder formed when the Nazca Plate and the South American Plate collided during the Andean orogeny.
4. Salar de Uyuni
You have most likely seen the Salar de Uyuni on TV without even realizing it. Located in Bolivia, Salar De Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat and is a sought out destination for those making car commercials. While it is best to film commercials in the area during the dry season from April to October, it is perhaps more visually stunning to visit the flat in the wet season when the rain changes the ground into the world’s largest mirror. Spanish cinematographer Enrique Pacheco shot a stunning time-lapse video of the area last year titled “Reflections from Uyuni.” The video does a fantastic job of exploring the fabulous reflections that the salt flats produce.
3. The Marble Chapel
For centuries no one knew how the Marble Caves of Chile retained their state of incredible beauty and extravagance, so they came up with their own legends. The Maori people explained that the multi-colored stones and giant crystals found within the cave were the result of a mythological canoe wreck. Irish stories claim that a massive worldwide quarrel amongst gods led to the formation of the natural wonder. Scientists were eventually able to come up with a factually based explanation. The progression of time combined with wave erosion have shaped the caves into their current state. The reflective blue-green water of Carrera Lake, which the Marble Caves lie in, substantially enhances the amazing colors found in the cave.

At 22,615 feet this massive stratovolcano is the highest active volcano in the world and barely trails the Aconcagua peak for being the highest point in the western hemisphere. Luckily this massive volcano hasn’t erupted for roughly 1300 years. The volcano’s easy ascent has made it an attractive destination to set altitude records in vehicles. In April of 2015 Chilean Gianfranco Bianchi set the altitude record for motorbikes when he went 21,233 feet up the mountain on a Suzuki RMZ 450. This region also contains the world’s highest lake regarding elevation. The Ojos del Salado Pool lies 20,997 feet high on the eastern side of the wonder.

Visiting these waterfalls located on the border of Argentina and Brazil will leave you with drop jaw syndrome. Not only are these falls the largest system of waterfalls in the world, but they are also visually stunning. You have to visit this site to understand its majesty, using words and seeing pictures is futile. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt put it best when she said, “Poor Niagara,” upon first seeing Iguazu Falls. Iguazu Falls retain this reputation over its rival in the U.S. to this day. While Niagara Falls has seen casinos and Starbucks crop up around it, Iguazu Falls remains a spot surrounded totally by nature. Clearly, Niagara Falls has to stop trying so hard.

#7 … Andean Condor (an-dee-un) -- With 10-foot wingspan , this is the largest flying bird in the world. They’re found in the mountainous areas of western South America at elevations up to 18,000 feet. Updrafts at those extreme altitudes allow the birds to travel great distances with only an occasional flap of their wings.
#6 … The Living Rock -- Believe it or not, these are not rocks … but living, breathing organisms. Their appearance allows them to avoid predators by blending into the environment, most often beaches in Chile. Each of these creatures possess both male and female organs and are able to breed individually. Sounds like a party. Can you smell what the Living Rock is cooking?
#5 … Amazon Horned Frog -- found in freshwater marshes of the Amazon rainforest, they’re just small enough to sit on a tea saucer with their limbs just barely over the rim. They use their small size to their advantage, hiding between shrubbery until they see jump out and feast … but only on something smaller than themselves!
#4 … Venezuelan Poodle Moth -- This is a relatively new species of moth discovered in Venezuela in 2009. The insect’s appearance is so bizarre that people thought the discovery was a hoax, before the creature’s existence was confirmed. Relatively little is still known about this species.
#3 … Titanoboa (ti-tan-o-bo-ah)-- Or, ‘titanic boa’. In 2009, the fossilized remains gigantic prehistoric snakes were found in the tropics of Northern Colombia. Dating back nearly 60 million years, the fossils revealed a snake that measured 50 feet long and weighed more than a ton. The evidence suggests it would have resembled the modern-day boa constrictor but would’ve spent more time in the water like an anaconda.
#2 … Panda Ant -- Found in Chile, this does indeed look like an ant. But this insect actually belongs to the Mutillidae (mew-til-i-dee), which is a family of over 3,000 species of wasps. The females are wingless and are easily mistaken for large, hairy ants. When they turn up with this distinctive black-and-white coloring, they earn the title of Panda Ant -- although they’re neither. It’s still a wasp and is known to have a painful sting.
#1 … In 2016, construction workers in Brazil found a huge snake when it slithered out of a cave while crews were building a dam. The predator appeared after a rigged explosion went off. The massive reptile was identified as an anaconda and said to measure 32 feet long and weighed nearly half a ton. The animal was killed at the scene. Had it lived, it might have been crowned the largest snake ever.
