Spain (i/ˈspeɪn/; Spanish: España [esˈpaɲa]), officially the Kingdom of Spain (Spanish: Reino de España), is a sovereign state largely located on the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe, with archipelagos in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, and several small territories on and near the north African coast. Its mainland is bordered to the south and east by the Mediterranean Sea except for a small land boundary with Gibraltar; to the north and northeast by France, Andorra, and the Bay of Biscay; and to the west and northwest by Portugal and the Atlantic Ocean. Along with France and Morocco, it is one of only three countries to have both Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines. Extending to 1,214 km (754 mi), the Portugal–Spain border is the longest uninterrupted border within the European Union.
Spanish territory includes two archipelagos: the Balearic Islands, in the Mediterranean Sea, and the Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean off the African coast. It also includes two major exclaves, Ceuta and Melilla, in continental North Africa; and the islands and peñones (rocks) of Alborán, Alhucemas, Chafarinas and Vélez de la Gomera. With an area of 505,990 km2 (195,360 sq mi), Spain is the second largest country in Western Europe and the European Union, and the fourth largest country in Europe. By population, Spain is the sixth largest in Europe and the fifth in the European Union.
Mérida (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈmeɾiða]) is the capital of the autonomous community of Extremadura, western central Spain. The population was 58,164 in 2012. The Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993.
Mérida has a Mediterranean climate with Atlantic influences, due to the proximity of the Portuguese coast. The winters are mild, with minimum temperature rarely below 0 °C (32 °F), and summers are hot with maximum temperatures occasionally exceeding 40 °C (104 °F).
Precipitation is normally between 450 to 500 mm (17.7 to 19.7 in) annually. The months with most rainfall are November and December. Summers are dry, and in Mérida, as in the rest of southern Spain, cycles of drought are common, ranging in duration from 2 to 5 years.
In autumn the climate is more changeable than in the rest of the year. Storms occur with some frequency, but the weather is often dry.
Both humidity and winds are low. However, there is frequent fog, especially in the central months of autumn and winter.
The city of Merida, Spain, is mainly known for its roman monuments. However, it is an interesting town in its own, with a animated Plaza Mayor, an old arab fortress (alcazaba) and a roman bridge crossing the wide Guadiana river. It has also a beutiful parador located in an old conventy from the 17th century. Other interesting sites in the city are the Arch of August, the Temple of Diana (re-used to built a palace in the 16th century) and the Chucrh of Santa Eulalia, with an accesible crypt. ------------------------------------------------- la ciudad de Merida es famosa sobre todo por sus monumentos romanos. Merida is a lovely smaller Spanish city for a peaceful get-away combined with cultural sight-seeing. The town itself is the best part, with a curious mix of architecture from all ages. Palm trees decorate the town square where the entire population, (it would seem), appears each evening for pleasant company and a cup of coffee. Numerous Roman monuments are scattered throughout Merida, including Trajan's arch, a classic temple, the world's longest extant Roman bridge, a Moorish citadel, a Roman amphitheater, and a fine example of a Roman theater (for plays). If you're traveling through western Spain or eastern Portugal, Merida is worth a visit. Please enjoy the other videos from the Spain - Portugal series.
