Idukki is one of the 14 districts of Kerala state, India. Created on 26 January 1972, at that time the district headquarters was at Kottayam before it was moved to Painavu in June 1976. Idukki which lies in the Western Ghats of Kerala.Idukki is one of the most beautiful district in Kerala. The Idukki Dam, located in Kerala, India, is currently the 14th largest arch dam in Asia, at 555 feet in height. The dam stands between the two mountains - Kuravanmala (839 feet) and Kurathimala (925 feet). It was constructed and is owned by the Kerala State Electricity Board.
It is built on the Periyar River, in the ravine between the Kuravan and Kurathi Hills in Kerala, India. At 167.68 meters, it is one of the highest arch dams in Asia. It started generating power on 4 October 1975.[1] Technically, the dam type is a concrete double, curvature parabolic, thin arc dam.[2]
This dam was constructed along with two other dams at Cheruthony and Kulamavu. Together, the three dams have created an artificial lake that is 60 km² wide. The stored water is used to produce electricity at the Moolamattom Power house, which is located inside nearby rocky caves. The Government of Canada aided in the building of the dam with long term loans and grants.

Idukki is situated at the top of Western Ghats surrounded by mountains. The Asia's first and the world's second great arch dam is in Idukki. This arch dam built across the Kuravan Kurathi mountain is wonderful and beyond description. Attached to this dam of 650 feet length and 550 feet height, two other dams are also there in Kulmavu and Cherunthony.
This beautiful high range district of Kerala is geographically known for its mountainous hills and dense forests. The district headquarters of Idukki is located at Kuyilimala in Painavu.A land-locked district, Idukki is one of the most nature rich areas of Kerala.
The name Idukki has been derived from the Malayalam word 'idukku' meaning narrow gorge. Blessed generously by Mother Nature, Idukki offers diverse attractions like wild life sanctuaries, hill stations, spice plantation centers and mountain treks .
It is one of the districts in the state which has a number of wild life sanctuaries and offers abundant scope for promotion of eco tourism if infrastructure facilities and proper promotional activities are provided. It is also famed for its spice production, tea plantations and rubber cultivation. Idukki also boasts of having the highest arch dam in Asia. Idukki is one of the districts in the state where linguistic minority exists. The linguistic minority consists mainly of Tamil origin. They are mainly workers in the tea and cardamom plantations, spread in Peermade, Udumbanchola and Devikulam taluks. The district is highly heterogeneous in the matter of its people in their culture, climate, cropping pattern, physiographic features etc.

Idukki is one of the 14 districts of Kerala state, India. The district headquarters is located at Kuyilimala in Painavu.
The name of the district is derived from the Malayalam word Idukki, meaning narrow gorge.
Idukki has an area of 4,479 km2 (1,729 sq mi) and is the second largest District of Kerala (the largest being Palakkad). Rugged mountains and forests cover about 97 percent of the total area of the District. The district borders the Kerala districts of Pathanamthitta to the south, Kottayam to the southwest, Ernakulam to the northwest and Thrissur to the north and Coimbature, Dindigul and Theni Districts in Tamilnadu to the east.
Anamudi, the highest peak in India south of Himalayas, is in the Kuttampuzha Panchayat of Adimali Block, in the Kannan Devan Hills Village of Devikulam taluk. Thirteen other peaks in the district exceed a height of 2,000 m (6,600 ft). The Periyar, Thodupuzhayar and Thalayar are the important rivers of the district.
The four taluks (subdistricts) in the district are Devikulam, Udumbanchola, Peerumade and Thodupuzha. The taluks contain 65 villages between them.

The Idukki Dam, located in Kerala, India, is currently the 14th largest arch dam in Asia, at 555 feet in height. The dam stands between the two mountains - Kuravanmala (839 feet) and Kurathimala (925 feet). It was constructed and is owned by the Kerala State Electricity Board. It is built on the Periyar River, in the ravine between the Kuravan and Kurathi Hills in Kerala, India. At 167.68 meters, it is one of the highest arch dams in Asia. It started generating power on 4 October 1975.[1] Technically, the dam type is a concrete double, curvature parabolic, thin arc dam.[2] This dam was constructed along with two other dams at Cheruthony and Kulamavu. The Idukki Dam, located in Kerala, India, is currently the 14th largest arch dam in Asia, at 555 feet in height. The dam stands between the two mountains - Kuravanmala (839 feet) and Kurathimala (925 feet). It was constructed and is owned by the Kerala State Electricity Board.
It is built on the Periyar River, in the ravine between the Kuravan and Kurathi Hills in Kerala, India. At 167.68 meters, it is one of the highest arch dams in Asia. It started generating power on 4 October 1975.[1] Technically, the dam type is a concrete double, curvature parabolic, thin arc dam.[2]
This dam was constructed along with two other dams at Cheruthony and Kulamavu. Together, the three dams have created an artificial lake that is 60 km² wide. The stored water is used to produce electricity at the Moolamattom Power house, which is located inside nearby rocky caves. The Government of Canada aided in the building of the dam with long term loans and grants.

The name Idukki has been derived from the Malayalam word 'idukku' meaning narrow gorge. Blessed generously by Mother Nature, Idukki offers diverse attractions like wild life sanctuaries, hill stations, spice plantation centers and mountain treks .
It is one of the districts in the state which has a number of wild life sanctuaries and offers abundant scope for promotion of eco tourism if infrastructure facilities and proper promotional activities are provided. It is also famed for its spice production, tea plantations and rubber cultivation. Idukki also boasts of having the highest arch dam in Asia. Idukki is one of the districts in the state where linguistic minority exists. The linguistic minority consists mainly of Tamil origin.
