Institute of technology (also: university of technology, polytechnic university, technikon, and technical college) is a designation employed for a wide range of learning institutions awarding different types of degrees and operating often at variable levels of the educational system. It may be an institution of higher education and advanced engineering and scientific research or professional vocational education, specializing in science, engineering, and technology or different sorts of technical subjects. It may also refer to a secondary education school focused in vocational training. The term institute of technology is often abbreviated IT and is not to be confused with information technology.
The English term polytechnic appeared in the early 19th century, from the French École Polytechnique, an engineering school founded in 1794 in Paris. The French term comes from the Greek πολύ (polú or polý) meaning "many" and τεχνικός (tekhnikós) meaning "arts".
While the terms "institute of technology" and "polytechnic" are synonymous, the preference concerning which one is the preferred term varies from country to country.
The ‘’’Engineering Institute of Technology’’’ (EIT) is a private college operating globally that offers vocational education and higher education programs. EIT was founded in 2008 with headquarters in Perth, Australia.
EIT is registered as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) in the Vocational Education and Training Sector (VET) in Australia that delivers a number of engineering and technology based qualifications. The college is regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and delivers formal vocational qualifications to students worldwide.
EIT is also a higher education provider within Australia and is regulated by Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA).
The Engineering Institute of Technology was founded as an affiliate of IDC Technologies by Dr Stephen Mackay, the Dean of Engineering of the Institute. After its founding, the college proceeded to offer online program presented by leading industry instructors sourced globally, to students located worldwide. With an office first established in Perth, Australia, EIT soon expanded to countries including Canada, United States, United Kingdom, India, South Africa and New Zealand. Its office centers are accessible to students worldwide.
The Institute of Engineering (IOE) (Nepali: ईन्जिनियरिङ अध्ययन संस्थान), founded in 1930 is the first technical school of Nepal. It was reformed in the present shape in 1972 as an organ of Tribhuvan University. Besides producing low and tertiary level technicians, IOE runs professional diplomas, under graduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. programs. The institute has four constituent and ten affiliated campuses in the country.
The history of engineering education in Nepal can be traced to 1930, when a Technical Training School was established. The engineering section of the school offered only trades and civil sub-overseers programs. In 1959, the Nepal Engineering Institute, with the assistance of the government of India, started offering civil overseer courses leading to a Diploma in Civil Engineering. The Technical Training Institute established in 1965, with the assistance from the Government of Federal Republic of Germany, offered technician courses in General courses in General Mechanics, Auto Mechanics, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Drafting.
An institute is an organisational body created for a certain purpose.
Often they are research organisations (research institutions) created to do research on specific topics. An institute can also be a professional body.
In some countries institutes can be part of a university or other institutions of higher education, either as a group of departments or an autonomous educational institution without a traditional university status such as a "university Institute". (See Institute of Technology)
The word "institute" comes from the Latin word institutum meaning "facility" or "habit"; from instituere meaning "build", "create", "raise" or "educate".
In some countries, such as South Korea and Japan, private schools are sometimes called institutes, rather than schools. In Spain secondary schools are called institutes.
In the United Kingdom and the Isle of Man the term "institute" is a protected word and companies or other organizations may only use the word if they are "organisations which are carrying out research at the highest level or to professional bodies of the highest standing". Furthermore, if a company is carrying on a business under a different name to the company name, that business name must comply with the Business Names Act. Use of the title "institute" requires approval from the Secretary of State. Failure to seek approval is a criminal offence.
