Here is my Old
Movie Review for
Goodfellas,
Martin Scorsese's ultimate masterpiece of the gangster genre.
Released in
1990 and widely regarded as one of the best films ever made, Goodfellas is set over a span of several decades as it follows the story of gangster
Henry Hill. From a young age, Henry Hill (
Ray Liotta) has always been fascinated by the mob. He grows up to become a seedy young man and he is closely associated with fellow mobsters
James Conway (
Robert DeNiro) and
Tommy DeVito (
Joe Pesci) as they partake in various illegal activities fro selling drugs to stealing money. Goodfellas is ultimately a perfect example of what a big budget
Hollywood film should be like. This is movie-making entertainment at its absolute best, in terms of everything from performances to writing, to directing to music. This is simply one of the best gangster films ever. What are your thoughts on Goodfellas?
OVERALL RATING: 10/10 or
A+
A perfectly written and terrifically executed gangster film from one of the best directors in the history of cinema,
Martin Scorsese. Goodfellas is the very prime example of what a
Hollywood movie should be like; both compelling and entertaining with flawless storytelling and directing. This screenplay is not only riveting in its portrayal of real-life gangster Henry Hill, but it is also a beautifully written, classic tale of dirty mob activity and the pressure that comes with taking on the mob life. This is also one of the best films to wonderfully tackle narration, as it does it really well and always necessarily. I'm not one to always rave about narration as a method of storytelling, but when you have dialogue that is this well written, this appealing to watch, you can't help but applaud these screenwriters. Ray Liotta gives an incredibly sinister performance as
Hill and his journey into the deep depths of this world and his struggle to ultimately get out of it all is utterly fascinating. Robert DeNiro proves yet again that he is one of the best actors of his time with his role of paranoid mobster
Jimmy Conway. Joe Pesci singlehandedly steals every scene in he is in as the sadistically insane
Tommy. He's an utter delight to watch on screen as this crazy loose cannon who will snap at any moment.
100% deserving of his
Best Supporting Actor Oscar, no questions asked.
Lorraine Bracco and
Paul Sorvino round up the supporting cast in great roles as well. Martin Scorsese has now directed three of my favorite films of all time, this being one of them.
Whether it's through insanely well crafted tracking shots or smooth pans,
Scorsese has perfected his own unique vision into this movie as he will forever be known as one of the best, most masterfully skilled actor-directors of all time.
Incredible cinematography, sound and film editing, and a wonderful soundtrack and score, Goodfellas is one of the most enthralling and entertaining movies and gangster tales
I've ever watched. Scorsese is a master. This is just a flat-out masterpiece.
