Spitting cobras: the peculiar evolution of defensive venom in snakes
Cobras are a famously venomous snake that can be a double threat. They can deliver their venom through a painful bite, but some can also spit it - although it's not entirely clear why this ability evolved.
Venom has a complex evolutionary history and the reason some cobras evolved the ability to spit theirs is not entirely clear. Watch the video above to discover the secrets of spitting cobras and their toxic defences.

Spitting Cobra vs My Face!
In this episode, Coyote goes mano a mano (figuratively) with a spitting cobra! The incredible Mozambique spitting cobra's venom-spitting defense mechanism sure is unique and incredibly toxic... but just how accurate are those blinding spit takes?! Coyote will don a face shield and protective goggles to get face to face with this intimidating cobra to find out for himself!
The Mozambique spitting cobra adds an extra element of danger with its ability to "spit" venom at potential threats. Venom in the eyes or mucus membranes of a would-be attacker will cause intense irritation and temporary blindness, allowing the spitting cobra the opportunity to escape. A last resort defense for the cobra is to bite and delivery a toxic envenomation that is considered a medical emergency!

Spitting cobra, Aiming with 100% accuracy - Spitting venom up to 3 ft!
If the word ‘Cobra’ does not make shivers run down your spine, I assure you that you are in for a treat today-or maybe not!
While most cobras, once threatened, tend to inject the venom with their bites; the spitting cobra actually shares a unique identifiable feature that allows them to spit the venom at its victim with 100 percent accuracy.
Venom in snakes is commonly used by snakes to kill or hunt their prey, and in most cases, venomous snake attacks eventually lead to death or a form of paralysis by the victim.

About Jack Randall:
Jack is a zoologist on an adventure! His mission is to show off the world’s most amazing animals. Jack was educated at Oxford University following an apprenticeship with the iconic Steve Irwin (which started when Jack was 14!).
What Are Creature Features?
All creatures have evolved different tricks to survive in the wild places they call their homes! Each animal has an awesome story about how they look, what they eat and even how they move! Creature Features spotlight the stories behind these crazy cool adaptations.
The Science:
With over 1 Million species on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species, animal populations are in decline the world over. This is due to many reasons but what we know for sure is to keep the planet's amazing diversity of wildlife we need to learn as much as possible about where and how these creatures live their lives. Collating all the data we are gathering will help build a picture of which habitats are key to sustaining the largest diversity of life on planet earth.
Thanks to our amazing team without whom the series would not have been possible!

The Zebra Spitting Cobra ( Naja nigricincta nigricincta ) otherwise known as the Western Barred Spitting Cobra is one of 14 species of spitting cobras in the world, 7 live in Africa and other 7 live in Asia. This species lives in Namibia and
Angola and is infamous locally. Like all the spitting cobras they project venom through their fangs at at a potential threat, usually a predator, accurately at the eyes. The venom can be spat up to 3 metres. The venom if left in the eyes attacks the cornea and can leave the animal (or person) permanently blinded. The venom therefore has unique properties which actually has cytotoxic components as well as neurotoxic venom components. The result if bitten is severe necrosis, left untreated can lead to amputations. This spitting cobra also doesn't have a species specific antivenom, although research is currently being made in this area to prevent deaths or severe necrosis.
