The Story Of Energy With Professor Jim Al-Khalili | Order and Disorder | Spark
The great 19th-century Austrian physicist, Ludwig Boltzmann was one of the most important proponents of the idea that all matter is made of atoms.
Today no one doubts this is true but in Boltzmann's day it was a controversial idea and many of his contemporaries disagreed with him. But Boltzmann used brilliant mathematical arguments to show that many aspects of the world we observe, like the behaviour of heat, can be explained if one accepts that atoms are real.

What is entropy?
Entropy is one of the most complicate concepts in physics. To have an idea, have a look at what the Second Law of Thermodynamics tells:
“The entropy of an isolated system can never decrease over time”
It doesn’t sound clear at all… right?
Let’s dig more into this and see if we can understand better what is entropy!
What is entropy?
As a first approach, we can say that entropy tells us what is the “degree of disorder” of a system. Unfortunately, this is not a very precise definition. First of all, “order” and “disorder” are ambiguous and subjective concepts. How can we say if a system is more or less “ordered”? Is a glass of water at room temperature with ice blocks inside more or less ordered than the same glass a few hours later, when all the ice is melted?
We could be tempted to answer that the latter is “more ordered”; but actually, this is wrong: the entropy of the liquid water is higher than that of the water mixed with ice.
In nature, there are some systems that arise spontaneously and seem to be more ordered, even though their entropy increases. For example, if you mix oil and water in a container, and you leave it there for a while, you will observe a layer of oil forming above the water, and you will be tempted to say that the system is more ordered because oil and water are separated from each other. In reality, during this process, the entropy of the system has increased.
So, yes, entropy and disorder have some link; however this is only true on a very superficial level, and there is some risk of confusion.
There are better ways to define entropy. The easiest one is to think about heat and energy. In fact, there are some processes we are very familiar with, and that we can use to describe entropy. For instance, if we take a hot object and a cold one, and we put them in contact, heat will move from the former to the latter, and not the other way around. Indeed, scientists in the past formulated the second Law of Thermodynamics based on this example:
“Heat never moves spontaneously from a cold body to a hot body”
But, wait… a refrigerator works exactly in the opposite way: it removes heat from a cold environment and gives it off to the room, which is warmer! That’s true, but the key word here is “spontaneously”: the refrigerator doesn’t do that spontaneously, because it needs some external energy in order to work. In fact, if you unplug the refrigerator, heat will go back moving the usual way, from the warm place (the room) to the cold one (the refrigerator).
So, to summarize: if there is a difference in temperature between two bodies, this difference tends to even out spontaneously. This means that the heat moves spontaneously from the hot body to the cold one until the two of them reach an equilibrium, and at this point, heat is no longer transferred.
This natural fact can be exploited, for instance, to make an engine work. In fact, we can use a source of heat to make a motor or a turbine running, but this only works until there is a difference in temperature between the source of heat and the environment. The engine works because it is placed in the middle of this temperature difference, and the heat flows through it; once the equilibrium is reached, the motor stops working.
The problem here is that a flow of heat from the source to the environment cannot be inverted perfectly. For instance, I cannot use all the energy produced by the motor to keep the heat source hot (if it was possible, we could create perpetual motion! A dream for every crazy scientist…). Similarly, it is not possible for heat to move spontaneously between two objects at the same temperature: this does not happen either. It can only happen if we use some energy from outside, as for the refrigerator.
When physicists in the 1800s started to study heat, they did it with the purpose of understanding how to realize more efficient engines, and therefore they introduced the concept of entropy in order to describe how much energy could be extracted from a certain energy source. In other words, entropy gives a measure of how distant a system is from its condition of equilibrium. Two bodies in contact with each other have a low entropy, and as heat moves from the hotter to the colder one, entropy increases. When the objects reach the same temperature, entropy is maximum.
Somehow, we can say that entropy is a measure of how “concentrated” the energy of a system is. As energy disperses in the surroundings, entropy increases. For instance, a piece of coal originally has all the energy concentrated in it. When we burn it, however, this energy is released into the environment as heat, and we cannot get it all back: entropy has increased.
So far so good: this is a good way to understand entropy. But we can do even better!

What is entropy? According to the principle of entropy, breakdown and decay inevitably impact every aspect of the natural world. The second law of thermodynamics states that decay and disorder are inescapable, and will always increase. Despite human effort to reverse the process, entropy continues to increase.
The philosopher John Gray claims that the whole of human life is not a progressive activity: what’s gained in one generation can be easily lost in the next.
As technology and science make cumulative progress, societies, cultures and individuals continue to decline.
Our dissatisfaction with the ageing process, disintegration of society, and physical decay on a global scale, pushes many of us into activism.
But can decay and death be completely reversed by human effort?
Scientist & Theologian Dr Mark Hocknull points out that decay finds its cause in deeper laws governing the physical universe itself.
According to the principle of entropy, breakdown and decay inevitably impact every aspect of the natural world. The second law of thermodynamics states that decay and disorder are inescapable, and will always increase. Despite human effort to reverse the process, entropy continues to increase.
In the face of inevitable universal decay and the inescapable laws of physics, do we give up or fight back?
Why is it that we continue to long for meaning in a world that is programmed to decay?

Imagine you’re an interstellar traveler. What sorts of alien life might you find out there in the universe? It’s interesting to speculate on how life might evolve in the depths of a planet covered by oceans, or the skies of a world with an atmosphere teeming with floating life.
This concept is explored in great scientific detail in The Teeming Universe: an interstellar field guide by speculative author and artist Christian Cline. The book, which I have a link to down below, explores how alien life might evolve on various types of planets much different from our own.
So, for this entry into the archive, we’ll be joining a scientific vessel on a journey into the beyond — and will explore just some of the worlds that Cline covers in his field guide...

Order (biology)
In biological classification, the order is
a taxonomic rank used in the classification of organisms and recognized by the nomenclature codes. Other well-known ranks are life, domain, kingdom, phylum, class, family, genus, and species, with order fitting in between class and family. An immediately higher rank, superorder, may be added directly above order, while suborder would be a lower rank.

Classic books like Dragonology and fictional documentaries like Discovery Channel’s Dragon Special have entertained the hypothetical idea of realistic dragons in the past, but I’ve been looking for more scientific takes on these mythical creatures.
Enter Draconology — a meticulously-detailed spin on the concept that imagines dragons as a parareptilian offshoot which emerged millions of years ago, and have survived until the modern day. The project was created by the ...

Systems Biology: A Short Overview
Predicting the outcome of an observable phenomenon belongs to the key disciplines of natural sciences. A chemist can precisely calculate the temperature increase when dehydrating sugars upon contact with sulfuric acid. A physicist can predict the force needed to leverage a rock of a certain weight. But for a biologist, the situation is different. It is an excessively difficult and time-consuming task to perform detailed calculations on biological systems. For a long time, it was even believed that a mysterious vital spark drives all living entities.
So what makes calculations in biology so different from other sciences? Living entities belong to the most complex systems in existence. At the most basic level, a single cell comprises huge numbers of molecules and is structured in a very de...

Levels of organisation an organism | Cells | Biology | FuseSchool
Our body is a pretty fantastic feat of engineering. But how does it work? How do all of the different components come together to keep us alive, keep us functioning and achieving our goals?
In this video we are going to look at the levels of organisation in organisms, from smaller than cells to bigger than organs.
In unicellular organisms, the single cells performs all life functions. However, multicellular organisms have various levels of organisation within them.
All living things are made up of cells; this is what distinguishes them as living. Cells are the building blocks of life. Inside cells are little organelles.
These are specialised structures that carry out particular jobs or functions. Like in this animal cell, the mitochondria provides energy to the cell. And the ribosomes are...

Explores classification in biology as well as taxonomy hierarchy: domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species with The Amoeba Sisters! This video also discusses the importance of scientific names and why classification can have major changes due to DNA and cell structure evidence. Video has a handout: http://www.amoebasisters.com/handouts.html. See table of contents by expanding details 👇
Table of Contents:
Intro 00:00
Importance of DNA in naming 1:04
Classification Mnemonic 1:41
Domains 2:04
Kingdoms 3:51
Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus 5:52
Species and Scientific Name 6:06
Common Name vs Scientific Name 6:49
Important Vocabulary:
Prokaryotes vs. Eukaryotes
Autotrophs vs. Heterotrophs
Unicellular vs. Multicellular
Cell Wall vs No Cell Wall (All cells have a membrane!)
Binomial Nomenclature
P.S. When we went back through subtitles, we realized we have a mispronunciation. Oh Archaea. We've heard ar-KEE-ə. We've heard ar-KAY-ə. But there's a mispronunciation here for that domain just to let you know.
The Amoeba Sisters videos demystify science with humor and relevance. The videos center on Pinky's certification and experience in teaching biology at the high school level. For more information about The Amoeba Sisters, visit:

In biological classification, the order is
a taxonomic rank used in the classification of organisms and recognized by the nomenclature codes. Other well-known ranks are life, domain, kingdom, phylum, class, family, genus, and species, with order fitting in between class and family. An immediately higher rank, superorder, may be added directly above order, while suborder would be a lower rank.

Taxonomy and taxonomic hierarchy i.e Biological Classification of Living Things is explained in this video lesson. This video explains the taxonomic hierarchy shows the taxonomic categories or ranks of living things. In the taxonomic hierarchy, the biological classification of living beings is divided into 7 levels of taxonomy which are Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species.
What is Taxonomy and Taxonomic Hierarchy?
Taxonomy in biology refers to the classification of organisms based on their characteristics. This hierarchical system of ranking and classifying organisms to the species level is called taxonomic hierarchy i.e. biological classification of living things. Taxonomic hierarchy categories are also known as Linnaean hierarchy as they were introduced by Linnaeus.
The broadest classifications are by domain and kingdom while the most specific classification is by genus and species. Each species has certain identifiers which are unique to them and describes them.

Lyrics:
Animals, animals, animals, traits they vary
Size, shape, diet, habitat, and their type of babies
So this man, Linnaeus, wanted to organize living things
So he made a system, we call a taxonomy
So every living thing is sorted, sorted
In seven major levels, seven, seven
And at the top, starting broad
Specific at the bottom
After domain, broadest rank
It starts with the
Kingdom
And Phylum, Class, Order
Family, Genus, ends with Species, start
Kingdom
And Phylum, Class, Order
Family, Genus, ends with Species, start
Let’s take a dog’s taxon
Their Kingdom, Animalia
Their Phylum is Chordata
And Class, Mammalia
Then Order, Carnivora
And Family, Canidae
Canis is the Genus
And Species level, Canis Lupus
Scientists, scientists, scientists claim six Kingdoms
Plants, Animals, Eubacteria, Protists, Fungi, Archaea
And then the Phylum divided into thirty Phyla
More similar characteristics they have in common
Then Phyla broken down to Classes, Classes
And Order is even smaller branches, branches
Family is next, more common
Genus, we’re close to the end
Most specific are Species
Like humans, Homo Sapiens
Kingdom
And Phylum, Class, Order
Family, Genus, ends with Species, start
Kingdom
And Phylum, Class, Order
Family, Genus, ends with Species, start
Let’s take a dog’s taxon

Classic books like Dragonology and fictional documentaries like Discovery Channel’s Dragon Special have entertained the hypothetical idea of realistic dragons in the past, but I’ve been looking for more scientific takes on these mythical creatures.
Enter Draconology — a meticulously-detailed spin on the concept that imagines dragons as a parareptilian offshoot which emerged millions of years ago, and have survived until the modern day. The project was created by the artist VikasRao, and his Draconology series is unbelievably comprehensive.
So, for this entry into the archive, let’s make our own dragon documentary, and explore the awesome fictional science of Draconology…

At the most basic level, a single cell comprises huge numbers of molecules and is structured in a very densely organized space, All those molecules participate in a numerous biochemical reactions, highly regulated enzymes drive these reactions, and
external signals interfere with the cell, in the form of hormones, drugs, or variations in the amount of nutrition available.
It is not possible for the human mind to keep track of so many processes in parallel. So, how can we calculate effects of cellular functions? The most viable option is to construct highly detailed computer models that facilitate visualization and statistics to see trends, and mathematical modeling to precisely calculate interactions of components to predict system behavior.
In order to be reliable and diagnostically conclusive, these models need to be constricted to real-world conditions by incorporating physicochemical constraints. However, the complexity of the interactions can still be overwhelming.
Yet, making biological phenomena predictable is worthwhile. By simulating entire cellular systems we could: Gain a better understanding of the system in its entirety. Calculate how much medicine a patient should take in order to avoid adverse effects, or Determine potential weaknesses of harmful pathogens as a precursor for drug development.
To this end, the University of Tuebingen and the University of California, San Diego, established a joint project with the aim of developing new computational methods that make it possible to model all levels of biological systems.
As the result, a wide range of software and database solutions have been created that make building and analyzing systems biology models much more straightforward.

And the ribosomes are involved in protein synthesis.
Cells themselves are the basic structures that make up living organisms.
In multicellular organisms, they are differentiated to carry out different roles. Here are a few specialised human cells...
Groups of cells then function together to form tissues. In humans, we have 4 main types of tissue. And in plants… the xylem and phloem are examples of plant tissues.
When there are layers of tissue working together, they form an organ. Organs are specialised to carry out specific life processes. All animals contain organs. In fact, mammals have five vital organs that they cannot live without: kidneys, lungs, liver, heart, and brain.
But plants have organs too…
These specialised organs work together in organ systems, performing body functions. Organ systems keep the body regulated and in a stable state. The human body has 11 organ systems.
Organisms are entire living things that can carry out all basic life processes. Multicellular organisms are made up of organ systems, but unicellular organisms such as bacteria or protist are made up of one cell.
So there are the levels of organisation in multicellular organisms.
Organelles → cells → tissues → organs → organ systems → organisms
