There were still eight players going into the final leg, the Betfair Ascot Chase, but only two had selected supremely impressive winner Silviniaco Conti.
That meant that the jackpot went down to the tiebreak question of naming the winning distance in the 1.50 at Asot (half-a-length) with the closest answer winning.
The lucky - or should that be inspired? - player was Lee Binnie while commiserations must go to Shaun Dodds who came so close to a dream result.
After three legs, there were still 610 players in contention following victories for Vyta Du Roc (9/2), Reve De Sivola (7/2) and Sausalito Sunrise (3/1) but that number was just down to 46 after Bishops Road (13/2) won the Betfred Grand National Trial at Haydock.
Rayvin Black (10/3) then knocked out another 38 players to leave just eight standing ahead of the Ascot Chase.
Silviniaco Conti, the winner of that race, may now head for the Crabbie's Grand National at Aintree and Sky Bet cut Paul Nicholls' star to 16/1 from 33s.
Boston Bob, who won the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse, could also line up in Liverpool and he halved in price to 33/1 with the Leeds' layers.
