Hackney City Farm is a city farm in Haggerston the London Borough of Hackney. It is situated on Hackney Road at the junction of Goldsmith's Row.
It was established in 1984 as a community and educational resource and to give the people, particularly young people, of the borough experience of animals. The facilities at Hackney City Farm include a farmyard, area for grazing, garden and a tree nursery with butterfly house. The amenity encourages children to learn about the natural environment, growing vegetables and caring for animals. The farm is home to a range of animals including: poultry, sheep, rabbits, bees, pigs and a donkey. The Farm also runs educational projects, exhibitions, courses in crafts and farm trails, and operates a café, Frizzante, which recently won a Time Out award for best family restaurant. Animals can be adopted at the farm, and free range eggs are for sale at £1.20 for 6.
A farm is an area of land that is devoted primarily to agricultural processes with the primary objective of producing food and other crops; it is the basic facility in food production. The name is used for specialised units such as arable farms, vegetable farms, fruit farms, dairy, pig and poultry farms, and land used for the production of natural fibres, biofuel and other commodities. It includes ranches, feedlots, orchards, plantations and estates, smallholdings and hobby farms, and includes the farmhouse and agricultural buildings as well as the land. In modern times the term has been extended so as to include such industrial operations as wind farms and fish farms, both of which can operate on land or sea.
Farming originated independently in different parts of the world as hunter gatherer societies transitioned to food production rather than food capture. It may have started about 12,000 years ago with the domestication of livestock in the Fertile Crescent in western Asia, soon to be followed by the cultivation of crops. Modern units tend to specialise in the crops or livestock best suited to the region, with their finished products being sold for the retail market or for further processing, with farm products being traded around the world.
Hackney commonly refers to:
It may also refer to:
A city is a large and permanent human settlement. Although there is no agreement on how a city is distinguished from a town in general English language meanings, many cities have a particular administrative, legal, or historical status based on local law.
Cities generally have complex systems for sanitation, utilities, land usage, housing, and transportation. The concentration of development greatly facilitates interaction between people and businesses, benefiting both parties in the process, but it also presents challenges to managing urban growth.
A big city or metropolis usually has associated suburbs and exurbs. Such cities are usually associated with metropolitan areas and urban areas, creating numerous business commuters traveling to urban centers for employment. Once a city expands far enough to reach another city, this region can be deemed a conurbation or megalopolis. In terms of population, the largest city proper is Shanghai, while the fastest-growing is Dubai.
There is not enough evidence to assert what conditions gave rise to the first cities. Some theorists have speculated on what they consider suitable pre-conditions and basic mechanisms that might have been important driving forces.
London i/ˈlʌndən/ is the capital and most populous city of England and the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia. It was founded by the Romans, who named it Londinium. London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its 1.12-square-mile (2.9 km2) medieval boundaries and in 2011 had a resident population of 7,375, making it the smallest city in England. Since at least the 19th century, the term London has also referred to the metropolis developed around this core. The bulk of this conurbation forms Greater London, a region of England governed by the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. The conurbation also covers two English counties: the small district of the City of London and the county of Greater London. The latter constitutes the vast majority of London, though historically it was split between Middlesex (a now abolished county), Essex, Surrey, Kent and Hertfordshire.

For over 20 years, Hackney City Farm has been giving the local community the opportunity to experience farming right in the heart of the city. It offers an opportunity for children and adults to get up close to a range of farmyard animals.
Hanging about London I accidentaly got to the Hackney city farm. Grunting, crowing, bleating are coming from all sides. To my mind, this idea of creating a small farm in the big city is wonderful. There are lots of animals here, it's obvious that they are kept with a great deal of love.
WUSSTET IHR, DASS SCHWEINE SOOO GROß SIND UND WIE FINDET IHR DIESEN GEHEIMTIPP FÜR LONDON? Golden Guernsey goat at Hackney City Farm
Rainy afternoon in big city.. Come dride with me across Tower Bridge and continue to Hackney.
If the parks of London are the lungs of the city, the farms and gardens are it's heart. Hidden in the back-streets and back-alleys of neglected estates, on railway sidings and in disused corners of the city, seemingly unnoticed by the hustle and bustle of the rat race, is a network of precious green space. There are 16 city farms in London and hundreds of community gardens and growing sites. Almost without exception they are independent charities, started by volunteers and treasured by their local communities.
Society has lost connection to direct food sources. Will Allen, the founder and CEO of Growing Power Inc. in Milwaukee is trying to change that disconnect, with his non-profit organization and urban farming initiatives. At his two-acre farm on Silver Spring Dr., Allen highlights his hydroponic and aquaponic growing methods, and explains sustainable practices to grow, process, market, and distribute food. Student Producers: Alejandro Santiago, Kenneth Williams, Jeff Morris, Joseph Pfaff, and Jibril Gagale.
