When I'm not working on tutorials and sample libraries, I spend time redoing the sound for just about any kind of video I can get my hands on. It's great practice and a lot of it will end up on a demo reel to shop around. I thought it would be fun to document the process, passing on some sound design tips along the way and hopefully starting a dialogue with other sound designers!

Sound design is the process of specifying, acquiring, manipulating or generating audio elements. It is employed in a variety of disciplines including filmmaking, television production, theatre, sound recording and reproduction, live performance, sound art, post-production and video game software development. Sound design most commonly involves the manipulation of previously composed or recorded audio, such as music and sound effects. In some instances it may also involve the composition or manipulation of audio to create a desired effect or mood. A sound designer is one who practices the art of sound design.
The use of sound to evoke emotion, reflect mood and underscore actions in plays and dances began in prehistoric times. At its earliest, it was used in religious practices for healing or just for fun. In ancient Japan, theatrical events called kagura were performed in Shinto shrines with music and dance.
Plays were performed in medieval times in a form of theatre called Commedia dell'arte, which used music and sound effects to enhance performances. The use of music and sound in the Elizabethan Theatre followed, in which music and sound effects were produced off stage using devices such as bells, whistles, and horns. Cues would be written in the script for music and sound effects to be played at the appropriate time.

Ben Burtt Interview: The Sound of Lightsabers
Ben Burtt, sound designer of the Star Wars films, details how he created the iconic sound of lightsabers in this vintage interview. The lightsaber hum is one of Burtt's favorite sounds, he says. Inspired by Ralph McQuarrie's concept paintings featuring lightsabers, Burtt said he could "hear the sound in his head." At the time, he was still a graduate student at USC and was working as a projectionist. The old projector had an interlocked motor which, when idle, made a "wonderful humming sound." Burtt recorded it, and it became the basis of the lightsaber sound. But it wasn't enough -- he needed a buzzing sound, and he actually found it by accident. Walking by television set with a live microphone, the microphone picked up the transmission from the unit and produced a buzz. Burtt loved it, ... -

Ben Burtt, sound designer of the Star Wars films, details how he created the iconic sound of lightsabers in this vintage interview.
The lightsaber hum is one of Burtt's favorite sounds, he says. Inspired by Ralph McQuarrie's concept paintings featuring lightsabers, Burtt said he could "hear the sound in his head." At the time, he was still a graduate student at USC and was working as a projectionist. The old projector had an interlocked motor which, when idle, made a "wonderful humming sound." Burtt recorded it, and it became the basis of the lightsaber sound. But it wasn't enough -- he needed a buzzing sound, and he actually found it by accident. Walking by television set with a live microphone, the microphone picked up the transmission from the unit and produced a buzz. Burtt loved it, recorded it, and combined it with the projector motor, creating a new sound that became the basic lightsaber tone. To achieve the aural effect of a lightsaber moving, he played the hum out of a speaker and waved a microphone by it; doing so created the fascimile of a moving sound, and in this case, the sound of a Jedi or Sith wielding a weapon in battle. In this video, Burtt is seen using this technique to match the strikes in Luke Skywalker's duel with Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back.

Video Game Sound Design Demo (Unreal 4, FMOD)
I'm Luke Harrison and this is my Sound Design Demo for Video games. I used Unreal 4 and FMOD to get to grips with industry standard engines and potentially kick start my career as a sound designer for video games. If you have any questions about what you see in the video or need some clarification, then please don't hesitate to ask. I am self taught and therefore some things may differ from how they are supposed to be done, but if it works then I don't see a problem. I just did what I thought was necessary to implement each sound/effect. If I had more time I would probably have built the sound effect a little more complex, for example the ambience is just one track whereas I could have built it more dense or maybe had some subtle random elements incorporated. Realice el concepto visual, diseño sonoro y música para este video.
Hace unos años, tuve un accidente de tránsito. Desde ese día sufro Tinnitus ( o también en Argentina se les llama Acúfenos...) desde entonces, llevo una pelea cada día, durante años para superar la afección que me provoca oír algo que no está.
Pero vale decir, que encontré interesante esta posibilidad de realizar pequeños fragmentos de video, recreando ( con diseño sonoro) esto que escucho y tan mal me hace. Con la idea de compartir, dar a conocer y que nuestras familias, amigos y gente cercana pueda entender porque algunas veces uno se siente tan aislado y con poco humor.
El tinnitus, de apoco va quitándome la habilidad de oír, de entender las palabras en algunos espacios donde hay ruido, enfocarme en mis labores, componer la música o diseñar sonido.
Estos videos están pensandos para vos, para que puedas entender a quienes padecemos este mal, y muchas veces no encontramos las herramientas ideales para comunicarnos y sentirnos bien. Este ruido, es la razón.
Desde ya, te pido compartas, comuniques y que podamos ayudarnos y así no sentirnos tan solos y aislados del mundo.

Eliot Lipp is a veteran musician and sound designer gearing up to release his 9th studio album, Come To Life. After more than a decade living in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York (but equally home on the road), the intrepid producer returned to his roots in the Pacific Northwest before recording the album, much of which came together over a single inspired weekend.
Returning home provided Lipp with new inspirations for his blend of sampledelic funk and techno inspired hiphop beats. The mossy green woods and snowy mountains of the Pacific Northwest were essential to the ambiance and texture of the sounds. The result is a digital landscape filled with beautiful analog creations.

I'm Luke Harrison and this is my Sound Design Demo for Video games. I used Unreal 4 and FMOD to get to grips with industry standard engines and potentially kick start my career as a sound designer for video games. If you have any questions about what you see in the video or need some clarification, then please don't hesitate to ask.
I am self taught and therefore some things may differ from how they are supposed to be done, but if it works then I don't see a problem. I just did what I thought was necessary to implement each sound/effect. If I had more time I would probably have built the sound effect a little more complex, for example the ambience is just one track whereas I could have built it more dense or maybe had some subtle random elements incorporated. Please enjoy.

Bring all of your senses & open up to your emotional side.
This video is part of my "A Fashion Designer's Journey" segment of my channel.
A Sound of Paris - is what I decided to call it for three reasons.
1) Like a beautiful city, as Paris, she has many sounds. It's up for us to decide which sound resembles our experience with such a historical city as Paris.
2) I think it's amazing how we can sometimes so overlook things and take them for granted - in this case, LIFE - in all of its dimensions and sound just happens to play a huge role.
3) The beauty of sound is its ability to trigger our emotions in a such a deep level - which is one of the reasons why I still LOVE Bollywood music. In the case of Paris, I'll be opening it up with a famous orchestra and I'd like to invite you to see what emotional side it triggers.
But really, as a video itself, it's more of an opening to our upcoming segment:
Spring/Summer 2017!!

Some years ago I had a car accident, since that day I suffer from Tinnitus, among other things. The first years were hard and desolated, but with time this noise became more and more insidious.
I fight with it every single day of the 365 days of the year since that accidental day.
I find interesting and helpful making these videos that recreate how it feels when I am in the forest, in a concert, alone at my home or at the office.
The Tinnitus has drawn out my ability to listen, understand others, and focus on my work as a composer and sound designer.
These videos are for you. These videos were created for you to know that I know that you not always can understand me when I am angry, sad or simply uncommunicative: This noise is the reason.

Earlier this year Dubspot partnered with Decibel Festival in Seattle to present a series of music production and DJ workshops at this year's edition of the annual music, technology, and art event. During our visit, Dubspot curriculum director Chris Petti led a music production and sound design workshop, using Ableton Live and a Blue Snowball USB mic to sample and process sounds produced by various household objects including spoons, a fork, fruit, and other common items, showing the kinds of effects that can be made using these sounds as a starting point. Sampling sounds from your immediate environment like this is a great way to come up with fresh new ideas and directions.
