The Best of Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi (9 or 10 October 1813 -- 27 January 1901)
Verdi is considered, together with Richard Wagner, the preeminent opera composer of the nineteenth century. Verdi dominated the Italian opera scene after the eras of Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini. His works are frequently performed in opera houses throughout the world and, transcending the boundaries of the genre, some of his themes have long since taken root in popular culture, as "La donna è mobile" from Rigoletto, "Libiamo ne' lieti calici" (The Drinking Song) from La traviata, "Va, pensiero" (The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves) from Nabucco, the "Coro di zingari" (Anvil Chorus) from Il trovatore and the "Grand March" from Aida.
Moved by the death of compatriot Alessandro Manzoni, Verdi wrote Messa da Requiem in 1874 in Manzoni's honour, a work now regarded as a masterpiece of the oratorio tradition and a testimony to his capacity outside the field of opera. Visionary and politically engaged, he remains -- alongside Garibaldi and Cavour -- an emblematic figure of the reunification process of the Italian peninsula (the Risorgimento).
Verdi died in 1901, leaving behind some of the most admired operas of all time. His operas remain the most frequently performed in the world today.

Giuseppe Verdi non è stato soltanto un grande compositore, la sua stessa vita è stata straordinaria, lunga e appassionante come un romanzo ottocentesco. Nato nel 1813 sotto Napoleone, è vissuto fino al 1901 quando Einstein stava elaborando la sua teoria della relatività, l'Italia era una grande nazione, i lumi a petrolio avevano lasciato il posto alle lampadine elettriche, le automobili stavano per soppiantare le carrozze a cavalli e il cinematografo il teatro.
Verdi ha assistito all'incredibile cambiamento del mondo prodotto dalla rivoluzione industriale: per questo seguire la sua storia non significa soltanto percorrere una delle pagine più grandi della storia della musica, vuol dire attraversare i cambiamenti epocali che il mondo e l'Italia hanno vissuto tra l'800 e il '900. Grazie all'accurato sceneggiato di Renato Castellani e attraverso interventi di esperti in studio con Piero Angela possiamo così essere testimoni della vita quotidiana di un'epoca per tanti versi vicinissima a noi eppure così lontana: quando la vita media era di 33 anni, il 75% degli italiani era analfabeta e un bambino su 4 moriva prima di compiere un anno.

Nabucco (short for Nabucodonosor, English Nebuchadnezzar) is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Temistocle Solera, based on the Biblical story and the 1836 play by Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois and Francis Cornue. It is Verdi's third opera and the one which is considered to have permanently established his reputation as a composer.
Nabucco follows the plight of the Jews as they are assaulted, conquered, and subsequently exiled from their homeland by the Babylonian King Nabucco (in English, Nebuchadnezzar). The historical events are used as background for a romantic and political plot.
Its first performance took place on 9 March 1842 at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan under the original name of Nabucodonosor.

Giuseppe Verdi
Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi (Italian: [dʒuˈzɛppe ˈverdi]; 10 October 1813 – 27 January 1901) was an Italian composer of operas.
Verdi was born near Busseto to a provincial family of moderate means, and developed a musical education with the help of a local patron. Verdi came to dominate the Italian opera scene after the era of Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini, whose works significantly influenced him, becoming one of the pre-eminent opera composers in history.
In his early operas Verdi demonstrated a sympathy with the Risorgimento movement which sought the unification of Italy. He also participated briefly as an elected politician. The chorus "Va, pensiero" from his early opera Nabucco (1842), and similar choruses in later operas, were much in the spirit of the unification movement, and the composer himself became esteemed as a representative of these ideals. An intensely private person, Verdi however did not seek to ingratiate himself with popular movements and as he became professionally successful was able to reduce his operatic workload and sought to establish himself as a landowner in his native region. He surprised the musical world by returning, after his success with the opera Aida (1871), with three late masterpieces: his Requiem (1874), and the operas Otello (1887) and Falstaff (1893).

Verdi dominated the Italian opera scene after the eras of Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini. Nabucco (short for Nabucodonosor, English Nebuchadnezzar) is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Temistocle Solera, based on the Biblical story and the 1836 play by Auguste Anicet-Bourgeois and Francis Cornue. It is Verdi's third opera and the one which is considered to have permanently established his reputation as a composer. Nabucco follows the plight of the Jews as they are assaulted, conquered, and subsequently exiled from their homeland by the Babylonian King Nabucco (in English, Nebuchadnezzar). The historical events are used as background for a romantic and political plot. His works are frequently performed in opera houses throughout the world and, transcending the boundaries of the genre, some of his themes have long since taken root in popular culture, as "La donna è mobile" from Rigoletto, "Libiamo ne' lieti calici" (The Drinking Song) from La traviata, "Va, pensiero" (The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves) from Nabucco, the "Coro di zingari" (Anvil Chorus) from Il trovatore and the "Grand March" from Aida.
Moved by the death of compatriot Alessandro Manzoni, Verdi wrote Messa da Requiem in 1874 in Manzoni's honour, a work now regarded as a masterpiece of the oratorio tradition and a testimony to his capacity outside the field of opera. Visionary and politically engaged, he remains -- alongside Garibaldi and Cavour -- an emblematic figure of the reunification process of the Italian peninsula (the Risorgimento).
Verdi died in 1901, leaving behind some of the most admired operas of all time. His operas remain the most frequently performed in the world today.

Nato nel 1813 sotto Napoleone, è vissuto fino al 1901 quando Einstein stava elaborando la sua teoria della relatività, l'Italia era una grande nazione, i lumi a petrolio avevano lasciato il posto alle lampadine elettriche, le automobili stavano per soppiantare le carrozze a cavalli e il cinematografo il teatro.
Verdi ha assistito all'incredibile cambiamento del mondo prodotto dalla rivoluzione industriale: per questo seguire la sua storia non significa soltanto percorrere una delle pagine più grandi della storia della musica, vuol dire attraversare i cambiamenti epocali che il mondo e l'Italia hanno vissuto tra l'800 e il '900. Grazie all'accurato sceneggiato di Renato Castellani e attraverso interventi di esperti in studio con Piero Angela possiamo così essere testimoni della vita quotidiana di un'epoca per tanti versi vicinissima a noi eppure così lontana: quando la vita media era di 33 anni, il 75% degli italiani era analfabeta e un bambino su 4 moriva prima di compiere un anno.
