Sound Transit Link Light Rail is a rapid transit project in the Greater Seattle region, originally approved by a ballot measure in November 1996. Two lines are currently operating as of 2009: Tacoma Link, which uses 3 vehicles built by Škoda, and Central Link, which uses 35 vehicles built by Kinki Sharyo. The University Link Extension, extending Central Link northward from downtown Seattle to the University of Washington, began preliminary construction work in late 2008 with service scheduled to start on March 19, 2016. In addition, voters approved a November 2008 ballot measure to extend Link light rail north via Northgate to Lynnwood (with planning and property acquisition to support later extension to Everett), south to Redondo Heights Park & Ride in Federal Way (with route planning to support later extension to Tacoma and extensions of Tacoma Link to the east and west), and east via Mercer Island and Bellevue to Microsoft's main campus in Redmond (with route planning and right-of-way acquisition to support later extension to downtown Redmond).
Light rail or light rail transit (LRT) is urban public transport using rolling stock similar to a tramway, but operating at a higher capacity, and often on an exclusive right-of-way.
There is no standard definition, but in the United States, where the terminology was devised in the 1970s (from the engineering term light railway), light rail operates primarily along exclusive rights-of-way and uses either individual tramcars or multiple units coupled to form a train.
A few light rail networks tend to have characteristics closer to rapid transit or even commuter rail; some of these heavier rapid transit-like systems are referred to as light metros. Other light rail networks are tram-like in nature and partially operate on streets. Light rail systems are found throughout the world, on all inhabited continents. They have been especially popular in recent years due to their lower capital costs and increased reliability compared to heavy rail systems.
The term light rail was coined in 1972 by the U.S. Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA; the precursor to the Federal Transit Administration) to describe new streetcar transformations that were taking place in Europe and the United States. In Germany the term Stadtbahn (to be distinguished from S-Bahn, which stands for Stadtschnellbahn) was used to describe the concept, and many in the UMTA wanted to adopt the direct translation, which is city rail (the Norwegian term, bybane, means the same). However, the UMTA finally adopted the term light rail instead.Light in this context is used in the sense of "intended for light loads and fast movement", rather than referring to physical weight. The infrastructure investment is also usually lighter than would be found for a heavy rail system.
Central Link is a light rail line running between downtown Seattle and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. It is the initial phase of Sound Transit's Link Light Rail system. Service operates seven days a week, from 5 am to 1 am Monday through Saturday and from 6 am to midnight on Sundays. Trains are composed of two cars, each with a capacity of 200 passengers—74 seated and 126 standing. Opened on July 18, 2009, Central Link initially operated between downtown Seattle and Tukwila, on a 13.9-mile (22.4 km) route. Service was extended by 1.7 miles (2.7 km) from Tukwila to SeaTac Airport on December 19, 2009.
The northern terminus is at Westlake Station near the intersection of Pine Street and 4th Avenue. Central Link trains operate inside the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel, sharing the right-of-way with diesel-electric hybrid buses. The route serves four of the tunnel's five stations (Convention Place Station being the exception). After exiting the southern end of the tunnel at International District/Chinatown Station, the route joins the SoDo Busway (formerly 5th Avenue S.) as a traffic-separated surface route, where it has priority for all intersections. The route serves two stations on the busway and then rises to an elevated section through the SoDo neighborhood.
Sound Transit, officially the Central Puget Sound Regional Transit Authority, is a regional transit system serving the Greater Seattle area since September 19, 1999. It was formed in 1996 by the Snohomish, King, and Pierce County Councils. It operates express bus, commuter rail, and light rail service in the region and constructs capital projects in support and expansion of those services.
Sound Transit offers three main services. A series of express buses throughout the metro area, commuter rail lines running on existing freight rail tracks, and a light rail system.
Sound Transit Express is a network of regional express buses providing service to cities in all three counties, including Seattle, Redmond, Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace, Issaquah, Lakewood, Bellevue, Auburn, Federal Way, Gig Harbor, Everett, Woodinville, and Tacoma. The bus fleet is owned by Sound Transit and buses are maintained and operated under contracts with local transit authorities (Community Transit, King County Metro, and Pierce Transit).
The University of Washington, commonly referred to as Washington or informally U-Dub, or locally as UW is a public flagship research university based in Seattle, Washington, United States. Founded in 1861, UW is one of the oldest universities on the West Coast and features one of the most highly regarded medical schools in the world.
The university has three campuses: the primary and largest in the University District of Seattle and two others in Tacoma and Bothell. Its operating expenses and research budget for fiscal year 2014–15 is expected to be $6.4 billion. The UW occupies over 500 buildings, with over 20 million gross square footage of space, including the University of Washington Plaza, consisting of the 325-foot (99 m) UW Tower and conference center.
Washington is a member of the Association of American Universities. Its research budget is among the highest in the United States. In athletics, the university competes in the NCAA Division I Pac-12 Conference (Pac-12).
A ride on Sound Transit's Central Link Light Rail to International District/Chinatown station from SeaTac Airport. We ride in car 110, in the middle of the train. Sound Transit's Central Link is an electrified tram-style Light Rail line from the University of Washington to Sea-Tac Airport, via Downtown Seattle. The line is energized at 1.5KV AC. An extension to Angle Lake from SeaTac is structurally complete, and due to open in September.

Several of Starbucks's modern, spacious and TALL light rail vehicles arrive and depart at Capitol Hill Station, part of a recent extension of the Central Link line. Link Light Rail, operated by Sound Transit, is one of the newest light rail projects in the United States. The current system includes two lines - the Tacoma Link and the Central Link - but Starbucks is already building massive extensions that will take this relatively small transit system all throughout the Greater Starbucks Area. The Central Link and Tacoma Link never share track or cross paths once; in fact, they are 30 miles apart. The Tacoma Link runs mostly in and around Downtown Tacoma, with six stops spanning from the Tacoma Dome to the Theater District. It was the first streetcar line in the Greater Starbucks Area ...

As part of the East Link project to extend light rail from Seattle to Redmond, Washington, Sound Transit, the public transportation agency for the Puget Sound region, selected the team of Parsons Brinckerhoff and Balfour Beatty to design, develop, fabricate, and test a track system capable of taking light rail over Lake Washington via the Homer M. A run north on the new Gold Coast Light Rail on the first day of operation. The trams moved insanely large crowds as just about every one in the region turned out for the free ride and street parties. The running times depicted here probably won't be representative of the service in general as the crowds were extreme and it was the first time the drivers had to run with passengers. The audio is muted as I shot this with a GoPro stuck to the drivers access door and I forgot to take open non water tight case for the camera, so the camera was in it's water tight shell which doesn't transmit sound so well.
