What's in a name? How about your next job?
Naming has always been something that we've done with our gut. But as we learn more about the scientific effects of names, maybe we need a better science of naming.
Ever since ancient times, people have suspected there's something spooky about names. Look at all those folktales where the heroine can defeat the villain, simply by guessing his name - everything from Rumpelstiltskin to Beetlejuice. And then there are the cultural taboos about speaking certain names out loud, whether it's of a particular god, or an exalted public figure, or even a dead friend or family member. But why do we ascribe so much power to names? I mean aren't names just words? Wouldn't a rose by any other name smell as sweet? You might be surprised.
Take these two random shapes. Now one of them is named "Kiki" and one of them is named "Bouba." But which one is which? Now if you said the more spiky shape is Kiki and the more rounded one is Bouba - congratulations you're in the 95% of people who feel the same way you do. But why is this such a strong trend?
Well, as it turns out names are not just these blank neutral words we use for communication. For reasons we don't fully understand, certain letters and phonetic sounds seem to carry a visual and even conceptual weight to them. In a world where more and more of our social interactions are in social networks, and we never meet face to face, names might be really important.
I can envision a future where people start to consult with name and username optimization experts, kind of the way businesses talk with branding consultants. But of course we're not just talking about naming human beings here. A small study found that two-thirds of Roomba vacuum cleaner owners are naming their Roombas. This means we're creating an emotional attachment with the things we own.
This history of naming has long been a seesaw battle between the scientific need for unique identifiers, and the more human need for something familiar that we can refer to in our day-to-day lives. Lets think about stars for a second. These days we have powerful telescopes hooked up to computers, discovering stars at an exponential rate. We have databases filled with more than a billion stars, most of which have names that are just based on their sky coordinates. For example, SDSSJ05552+0724 just rolls off the tongue doesn't it? Now we have given some stars some nicknames, including that one. You might know it better as "Beetlejuice." And here's a little trivia, if you say its name three times it collapses into a black hole!
Now if human beings ever settle distant star systems, we're gonna have to come up with some brand new familiar names. Hopefully we can avoid the same mistake the vikings made when they named their beautiful new settlement...Iceland.

When I was 19 years old, I was involuntarily placed in a mental hospital where I was diagnosed with Bipolar 2 disorder (bipolar depression). My life changed forever after that. As much as I want to tell you that when I left the hospital I saw the light and was completely healed, this is just not true. It has taken years of learning about mental health, getting involved in the community and building confidence to love myself as I am. I’ve realized that I am never going to live without bipolar 2 disorder and I want to give others a taste of my reality. This is the mind I have been given and I am learning to live with it and love it.
Two years ago, I decided to open up about my life as a young adult living with bipolar disorder and here I am today. Coming forward about my mental health is not an easy task, which is why I am asking that you join me in discussing topics under the mental health umbrella; mental health conditions, stigma, relationships, body image, eating disorders, social media, and the list goes on.
I’m joining HealthyPlace to establish a platform where we can talk about mental health openly and honestly. I will be sharing my story, as well as talking to friends, family and those around me about mental health. These episodes are going to be engaging, amusing and informative.
You are the most important part of my videos. Although I am sharing my story, I want to hear your story and what you have to say. You can do this by commenting, asking questions or doing a video for us.
You don’t have to be diagnosed to be a part of this conversation. Those of you without a diagnosis or knowledge of mental health are just as important. Don’t hesitate to share thoughts about those around you who have struggled with a mental health condition and the effects it had on your life. This is an open community and everyone is invited to join in. We can learn from each other's experiences.
I want you to know that if you are struggling with a mental health condition, you are not alone. We have the opportunity to give a voice to those who have been silenced by stigma and society. Hi. I’m Hannah Blum. I’m the first HealthyPlace mental health YouTube vlogger. I’ll be posting every Monday morning. When I was 19 years old, I was involuntarily placed in a mental hospital where I was diagnosed with Bipolar 2 disorder (bipolar depression). My life changed forever after that. As much as I want to tell you that when I left the hospital I saw the light and was completely healed, this is just not true. What's in a name? How about your next job?
Naming has always been something that we've done with our gut. But as we learn more about the scientific effects of names, maybe we need a better science of naming.
Ever since ancient times, people have suspected there's something spooky about names. Look at all those folktales where the heroine can defeat the villain, simply by guessing his name - everything from Rumpelstiltskin to Beetlejuice. And then there are the cultural taboos about speaking certain names out loud, whether it's of a particular god, or an exalted public figure, or even a dead friend or family member. But why do we ascribe so much power to names? I mean aren't names just words? Wouldn't a rose by any other name smell as sweet? You might be surprised.
Take these two random shapes. Now one of them is named "Kiki" and one of them is named "Bouba." But which one is which? Now if you said the more spiky shape is Kiki and the more rounded one is Bouba - congratulations you're in the 95% of people who feel the same way you do. But why is this such a strong trend?
Well, as it turns out names are not just these blank neutral words we use for communication. For reasons we don't fully understand, certain letters and phonetic sounds seem to carry a visual and even conceptual weight to them. In a world where more and more of our social interactions are in social networks, and we never meet face to face, names might be really important.
I can envision a future where people start to consult with name and username optimization experts, kind of the way businesses talk with branding consultants. But of course we're not just talking about naming human beings here. A small study found that two-thirds of Roomba vacuum cleaner owners are naming their Roombas. This means we're creating an emotional attachment with the things we own.
This history of naming has long been a seesaw battle between the scientific need for unique identifiers, and the more human need for something familiar that we can refer to in our day-to-day lives. Lets think about stars for a second. These days we have powerful telescopes hooked up to computers, discovering stars at an exponential rate. We have databases filled with more than a billion stars, most of which have names that are just based on their sky coordinates. For example, SDSSJ05552+0724 just rolls off the tongue doesn't it? Now we have given some stars some nicknames, including that one. You might know it better as "Beetlejuice." And here's a little trivia, if you say its name three times it collapses into a black hole!
Now if human beings ever settle distant star systems, we're gonna have to come up with some brand new familiar names. Hopefully we can avoid the same mistake the vikings made when they named their beautiful new settlement...Iceland.

What's in a name? How about your next job?
Naming has always been something that we've done with our gut. But as we learn more about the scientific effects of names, maybe we need a better science of naming.
Ever since ancient times, people have suspected there's something spooky about names. Look at all those folktales where the heroine can defeat the villain, simply by guessing his name - everything from Rumpelstiltskin to Beetlejuice. And then there are the cultural taboos about speaking certain names out loud, whether it's of a particular god, or an exalted public figure, or even a dead friend or family member. But why do we ascribe so much power to names? I mean aren't names just words? Wouldn't a rose by any other name smell as sweet? You might be surprised.
Take these two random shapes. Now one of them is named "Kiki" and one of them is named "Bouba." But which one is which? Now if you said the more spiky shape is Kiki and the more rounded one is Bouba - congratulations you're in the 95% of people who feel the same way you do. But why is this such a strong trend?
Well, as it turns out names are not just these blank neutral words we use for communication. For reasons we don't fully understand, certain letters and phonetic sounds seem to carry a visual and even conceptual weight to them. In a world where more and more of our social interactions are in social networks, and we never meet face to face, names might be really important.
I can envision a future where people start to consult with name and username optimization experts, kind of the way businesses talk with branding consultants. But of course we're not just talking about naming human beings here. A small study found that two-thirds of Roomba vacuum cleaner owners are naming their Roombas. This means we're creating an emotional attachment with the things we own.
This history of naming has long been a seesaw battle between the scientific need for unique identifiers, and the more human need for something familiar that we can refer to in our day-to-day lives. Lets think about stars for a second. These days we have powerful telescopes hooked up to computers, discovering stars at an exponential rate. We have databases filled with more than a billion stars, most of which have names that are just based on their sky coordinates. For example, SDSSJ05552+0724 just rolls off the tongue doesn't it? Now we have given some stars some nicknames, including that one. You might know it better as "Beetlejuice." And here's a little trivia, if you say its name three times it collapses into a black hole!
Now if human beings ever settle distant star systems, we're gonna have to come up with some brand new familiar names. Hopefully we can avoid the same mistake the vikings made when they named their beautiful new settlement...Iceland.

When I was 19 years old, I was involuntarily placed in a mental hospital where I was diagnosed with Bipolar 2 disorder (bipolar depression). My life changed forever after that. As much as I want to tell you that when I left the hospital I saw the light and was completely healed, this is just not true. It has taken years of learning about mental health, getting involved in the community and building confidence to love myself as I am. I’ve realized that I am never going to live without bipolar 2 disorder and I want to give others a taste of my reality. This is the mind I have been given and I am learning to live with it and love it.
Two years ago, I decided to open up about my life as a young adult living with bipolar disorder and here I am today. Coming forward about my mental health is not an easy task, which is why I am asking that you join me in discussing topics under the mental health umbrella; mental health conditions, stigma, relationships, body image, eating disorders, social media, and the list goes on.
I’m joining HealthyPlace to establish a platform where we can talk about mental health openly and honestly. I will be sharing my story, as well as talking to friends, family and those around me about mental health. These episodes are going to be engaging, amusing and informative.
You are the most important part of my videos. Although I am sharing my story, I want to hear your story and what you have to say. You can do this by commenting, asking questions or doing a video for us.
You don’t have to be diagnosed to be a part of this conversation. Those of you without a diagnosis or knowledge of mental health are just as important. Don’t hesitate to share thoughts about those around you who have struggled with a mental health condition and the effects it had on your life. This is an open community and everyone is invited to join in. We can learn from each other's experiences.
I want you to know that if you are struggling with a mental health condition, you are not alone. We have the opportunity to give a voice to those who have been silenced by stigma and society. Take your time when twisting and manipulating your hair when you are achieving the Havana Twist Hairstyle.
Try your best not to add too much hair to each twisting section because this will results in heavy twist and the same thing goes for heavy braids as well.
When twisting in your Marley Hair or Havana Twist Hair, use about 8 strands per section and make sure to do "brick parting" to hide gaps and spaces in between one twist extension to another.
Also, when you twist your Havana Twists, use a little bit of hair gel to slick down the ends of your real hair so that you can prevent your hair from sticking out of your braids.

1 There was a certain man from Ramathaim, a Zuphite[a] from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 He had two wives; one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.
3 Year after year this man went up from his town to worship and sacrifice to the Lord Almighty at Shiloh, where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests of the Lord. 4 Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters. 5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb. 6 Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her. 7 This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat. 8 Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?”
9 Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house. 10 In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. 11 And she made a vow, saying, “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.”
12 As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk 14 and said to her, “How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.”
15 “Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled. I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring out my soul to the Lord. 16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.”
17 Eli answered, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.”
18 She said, “May your servant find favor in your eyes.” Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.
19 Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the Lord and then went back to their home at Ramah. Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. 20 So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel,[b] saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”

21 When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual sacrifice to the Lord and to fulfill his vow, 22 Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, “After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present him before the Lord, and he will live there always.”[c]
23 “Do what seems best to you,” her husband Elkanah told her. “Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the Lord make good his[d] word.” So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned him.
24 After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull,[e] an ephah[f] of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. 25 When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli, 26 and she said to him, “Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. 27 I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. 28 So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.
