Anyone who was awakened about 2 a.m. Tuesday by the frightening booms of thunder knows the weather is a bit unstable at the moment.

And that will continue into the early evening as the midday sun is expected to give way to showers and thunderstorms, the National Weather Service reports.

A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for Lehigh and Northampton counties until 9 tonight.

"Some of these storms during the afternoon have the potential to produce locally damaging winds and hail," the weather service said in a hazardous weather outlook.

Severe storms could hit south of Philadelphia, the weather service said.

But the real change may be more evident on Wednesday when sunny skies yield a high temperature of just 63 degrees — 14 degrees lower than Tuesday's projected high.

And then Thursday brings showers and a high of just 58.

The average high for this time of year is 65, so it will be in the ballpark, but with the temperature ballooning to near 80 in recent days, the next several days will likely feel cool and could be a bit damp.
