Michael John "Mike" Hugg (born 11 August 1942) is a musician (drums, vibraphone, vocals, keyboards, songwriter) who achieved fame as a founding member of the 1960s group Manfred Mann.
Hugg was born in Gosport, Hampshire in 1942. His parents condoned his jazz drumming as long as he continued his piano lessons. Pursuing a career in jazz, he met Manfred Mann while serving as a musician at Butlin's Clacton and they formed a seven-piece group. The Mann-Hugg Blues Brothers recruited Paul Jones and later Tom McGuinness. On signing with HMV Records their producer, John Burgess, changed their name to Manfred Mann.
Hugg is a competent pianist and an able vibraphone player but his main role in Manfred Mann was drummer. However, he recorded several vibraphone solos with the band (e.g. "I'm your Kingpin") and used the instrument to augment hits such as "Oh No Not My Baby". He was credited as co-writer of the group's early hits and contributed solo compositions throughout its life, including jazzy instrumentals ("Bare Hugg") and wistful acid-pop ("Funniest Gig", "Harry the One Man Band"). His abilities as a songwriter grew throughout the group's career, though Hugg became progressively unhappy with the band's commercial output, describing the group's single "Ha! Ha! Said the Clown", in an interview with Melody Maker as one of the five worst records he had ever heard.
Manfred Mann were an English beat, rhythm and blues and pop band (with a strong jazz foundation) of the 1960s, named after their keyboardist, Manfred Mann, who later led the successful 1970s group Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Manfred Mann were chart regulars in the 1960s, and the first south-of-England-based group to top the US Billboard Hot 100 during the British invasion. Three of the band's most successful singles, "Do Wah Diddy Diddy", "Pretty Flamingo" and "Mighty Quinn", topped the UK Singles Chart.
The Mann-Hugg Blues Brothers were formed in London by keyboard player Manfred Mann and drummer/vibes/piano player Mike Hugg, who formed a house band in Clacton-on-Sea that also featured Graham Bond. Bringing a shared love of jazz to the British blues boom, then sweeping London's clubs (which also spawned Alexis Korner, the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds), the band was completed by Mike Vickers on guitar, alto saxophone and flute, bassist Dave Richmond and Paul Jones as lead vocalist and harmonicist. By this time they had changed their name to Manfred Mann & the Manfreds. Gigging throughout late 1962 and early 1963 the band soon attracted attention for their distinctive sound.
Mike is an abbreviation or shorthand for Michael.
The name Mike may refer to:
"Bonnie Charlie", also commonly known as "Will ye no come back again?", is a Scots poem by Carolina Oliphant (Lady Nairne), set to a traditional Scottish folk tune. As in several of the author's poems (she was known for "saccharine imitations of Jacobite song") its theme is the aftermath of the Jacobite Rising of 1745, which ended at the Battle of Culloden. Written well after the events it commemorates, it is not a genuine Jacobite song, like many other songs that were "composed in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but ... passed off as contemporary products of the Jacobite risings."
Lady Nairne came from a Jacobite family, and Prince Charles had stopped to dine at Nairne House on 4 September 1745, during the march to Edinburgh. Her father was exiled the year after, but the family "hoarded" a number of objects "supposedly given to him by Prince Charles."
The song, especially its melody, is widely and traditionally used as a song of farewell - often in association with Auld Lang Syne, and generally with no particular Jacobite or other political intent.

Lyrics He watched the silver boats in the sunset Riding into port on gentle breezes Heard the seagulls cry, they go round the bay As he sat in his chair by the open window Ships had been his life from ten to eighty And now the time had come for resting. His sons and their sons to, had taken over all that needed doing A time for reminiscing Goodbye Bonnie Charlie, good boat you served him well Goodbye untamed ocean, I'll soon be setting sail To ride the tide of eternity The little bay lit up by moonlight Like something from a fairy tale And never in his life, had he seen such a lovely night as this.....Heaven kissed Goodbye Bonnie Charlie, go...

"After the break-up of the original Manfreds it's two founding members recording some funky promo disks before forming Chapter 3. This is the first, for Ski Yoghurt. Ever so slightly repetitive, but still cool. The pair also recorded similar disks for Michelin tyres and Maxwell House coffee, but i've yet to hear those." Ex-Manfreds' single, edited from the LP of the same name. Magic!!
Very few photos exist of the Hartlepool Queen's Rink Ballroom days. One of the few that does, concentrates mainly on the audience in the foreground, but in the soft depth of field focus fuzzed background, it is possible to make out the group Manfred Mann playing on the 3ft stage. It reminded me of David Hemmings in the Antonioni film Blow-Up where he discovers a body in the undergrowth by enlarging his negative to the extreme of the reticulated dots. It seemed like a good idea to see if I could track down the Manfreds in a similar way - which I did - and then presented them with their past from 50 years previously. This is the result. Featuing the Manfreds, Paul Jones, Tom McGuiness and Mike Hugg. Part of my "Send Three and Fourpence..." video installation.

Manfred Mann - As Is (Mono) - (1966) 'As Is' is a 1966 pop music album by 'Manfred Mann'. It was their fourth overall (including a "greatest hits" package) but their first for Fontana Records and their first to feature new members Mike d'Abo and Klaus Voormann. It was produced by Shel Talmy and released in the U.K. on 21 October 1966. The twelve tracks on the record include the line-up's first single release, a cut-down version of Bob Dylan's "Just Like a Woman" that reached the UK top ten, and a short cool jazz version of "Autumn Leaves", reminiscent of the Modern Jazz Quartet with Mike Hugg's vibraphone and double bass from the group's former bassist Dave Richmond, sounding like an out-take from the group's instrumental releases: these two make weight for a fairly short collection of g...

Oh come on, it's all over, over here
I sat up here in my window lookin' down on the street
A strychnine poison woman, man don't you look so sweet
Well I said come on up and see me sometime
I'm just a drunken sailor but I'm feelin' so fine
I've been out sailin' on the seven seas, baby won't you give it to me? Oh
Baby won't ya drive me mad? Baby don't ya let me feel bad
Baby don't ya leave me alone, baby won't ya carry me home?
Baby won't ya jump and shout? You know what I'm talkin' about
Baby won't ya drive me wild? Baby let me see you smile
Watching you, it's alright now
For now I see all the sickly, salty swingers standin' on a bathroom floor
Slidin' and glidin' as she passed by my window
She was a female mercenary comin' home from war
The ultimate inflection of the word perfection
I thought I'd drop by to say, "Hi"
Sweetly, serenely, she showed me her gun, baby let's go get high, oh
Baby won't ya drive me wild? Baby let me see you smile
Baby won't ya please come here? Baby don't ya have no fear
Baby won't ya scratch my back? Baby don't ya leave me mad
Baby won't ya drive me mad? Baby don't ya let me be mad
Come on, get down
Oh yeah yeah yeah yeah, well, come on now
I sat down to the matters at hand, tryin' to find a way to beat the heat
Outside my window was a bunch of tipsy gypsys
Dancin' up and down the street
The lovely senorita took me by my hand
She said, "Oh, baby won't you be my man?"
I'll get yours and you'll get mine, baby let's have a good time
Baby won't ya drive me mad? Baby don't ya let me feel bad
Baby don't ya leave me alone, baby won't ya carry me home?
Baby won't ya jump and shout? You know what I'm talking about
Baby won't ya drive me wild? Baby let me see you smile
Baby won't ya please come here? Baby don't ya have no fear
Baby let me hold your hand, baby let me be your man
Baby won't ya scratch my back? Baby don't ya leave me mad
Baby won't you [Incomprehensible], baby won't you [Incomprehensible]
Baby won't ya drive me mad? Baby don't ya let me feel bad
Baby don't ya leave me alone, baby won't ya carry me home?
Baby won't ya jump and shout? You know what I'm talkin' about
