Andrew Wasson of
Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question
...
Q: One thing that has me confused when it comes to how key signatures are used in songs, is when a chord shows up that has nothing to do with the key. I'm a big
Radiohead fan and they do this a lot.
I've read different theory topics on this, but could you make a video that does more of a simple broad-based coverage for this type of thing, without tons of theory!

A: You can practice this by taking any progression and simply venturing away from the key signatures' diatonic harmony. The newly generated harmony, is essentially an experiment. If you like it, keep it. If you don't, try again. Shifting around the tonal centers may not always give you the sounds you're searching for, but it can offer a number of very interesting options for you. There's no doubt that altering the intervals of the roots used for the chords within a progression can make for some really interesting sounds
. In the video I run through some theory examining three important harmonic situations. Then, I head to the guitar to demonstrate an easy way to think about using intervals.
And, I wrap things up by demonstrating a number of example progressions.
