Black & Decker MTC220 12 Inch Lithium Cordless 3 in 1 Trimmer Edger and Mower, 20 volt Review
Hi Guys, today I’m reviewing the
Black & Decker Cordless
3-in-1 Trimmer/Edger and
Mower.
If I could rip up this entire lawn and put a vegetable garden instead, I would. I was tired of the oil and gas and maintenance of my regular lawn mower. I don’t have a huge lawn so I figured I’d try out this smaller mower. The cutting path is 12 inches wide and takes up much less space than my standard lawn mower. It weighs about 10 pounds.

This unit is cordless and comes with the detachable mower deck base with 4 wheels, guard, auxiliary handle, instruction manual, charger, two 20 volt rechargeable
Lithium Ion batteries and one spool of trimmer string. It serves as a lawn mower, trimmer and edger. The height is adjustable from 1.6 to
2.4 inches. You can adjust the height for mowing by pulling the axle (which is under the deck base) forward and slide it up or down to adjust. It has an automatic feed spool for continuous work and you don’t have to stop to adjust the spool. The first thing you do when you buy this mower is charge the battery which will take about 4 hours. A green led will flash while charging and stop flashing when fully charged. I would recommend charging both batteries as one battery will last about 20 to
30 minutes.
While the battery is charging, assemble the unit. The only tool you’ll need is a phillips head screwdriver.
Slide the guard onto the motor housing of the trimmer. Keep pushing until you hear it snap into place. It takes a little bit of a push and doesn’t slide easily after a certain
point.
Insert the included screw and tighten. Remove the tape on the spool, I had already done that.
Next, attach the auxiliary handle to the trimmer.
Push on both sides of the upper housing and push the handle on.
It’s a little tricky but doable.
Press the orange button to move the handle up or down. To adjust the height of the trimmer, loosen the collar, rotate it and move the upper housing straight up or down. Tighten the collar when you’re done adjusting. The battery slides in, push it until you hear a snap. To remove the battery, press the release button and pull it out. For safety’s sake don’t put the battery in until you’re ready to mow. You don’t want to be adjusting anything on the mower with the battery in. The trimmer/edger sits on the base. Put it in at an angle with the black edge guide going under the guard you’ll hear it lock into place. Press the foot pedal to release the trimmer from the base. There is no bag to collect the grass so the cut grass will lay on your lawn. To turn the unit on, push the safety button on the handle and pull the trigger under it. Just release the trigger to turn the unit off.
First I’ll mow my backyard where the grass is short and I just need to go over it once. It is a breeze to mow. Next I’ll mow my ridiculously overgrown front lawn.
This unit is great for inclines. As you can see I didn’t have any difficulty going up my lawn. The size allows it to get into tight spaces that a standard lawn mower couldn’t. It is also comfortable to hold while mowing - I had no problem holding it with one hand. The wheels also roll easily and did not get stuck at any point even on my tall grass. The grass was lower in my backyard and I only had to go over it once. With the extremely tall grass on my front yard, I had to go over certain spots more than once. If you mow your lawn every week or every other week, you should only need to go over it once.
If you have a big lawn, this unit is not for you because the two charged batteries will not be enough to cut your grass. The
12 inch cutting width is not large enough for a big lawn. If you have a small lawn like mine, the two batteries is more than enough to finish the job. If you’re a perfectionist and want your lawn to be perfectly green, this is not for you because this unit leaves grass on the lawn as you cut it, there is no collection bag. The grass cuttings left on the lawn will dry up and not look so pretty in a few days. It doesn’t bother me so this unit will work for my needs.
I’m edging the grass growing on the sides of my driveway.
Notice I’m wearing capri leggings and open sandals - don’t do that. All sorts of stuff shot at me and it hurt. So wear closed shoes and make sure your legs are fully covered.
The black and decker does a nice job of edging.
I can’t stand the smell of gasoline so this cordless electric black and decker is perfect for me. No pulling string to start the machine. No horrible smell or fumes. It’s lightweight and compact for storage.
Easy to clean, just wipe off.
I hope this review helped you and if it did, please like this video. I’ll see you next time with another review.
Thanks for watching.
