Travelogue 2011-03-15 Ethnic Odyssey 7: In this episode of Travelogue, come to Yushu for a closer look at the Tibetans of Qinghai and their horse-racing festival.
YUSHU
Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Region is located to the west of Qinghai Province, bordering Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Sichuan Province. It covers a vast land area of 267,000 sq km and has a population of only 0.36 million. The Yellow River, the Yangtze River and the Mekong River, the largest river in Southeast Asia, all originate in Yushu Region.
Yushu does not have four distinct seasons, and is extremely cold in winter. The average temperature is -0.8° C, and the average annual precipitation is 463.7 mm.
Yushu is rich in natural resources. Runoff of local rivers amounts to 32.4 billion m3, while the theoretical reserves of hydro energy total 5.4 million kw. In addition, mineral resources such as gold, silver, copper, iron, aluminum, coal, sulfur, crystal, and jade are abundant.
Yushu currently is not accessible by railways and airports. State Highway 109 (Qinghai-Tibet) connects Yushu with Xining, Lanzhou, Sichuan and Chongqing. There are also trunk highways connecting all the counties under the jurisdiction of Yushu. (From: www.hktdc.com)

Xining has a history of over 2100 years[1] and was a chief commercial hub on the Hexi Corridor caravan route to Tibet, handling especially timber, wool and salt in ancient times. The trade along the Hexi Corridor was part of a larger trade corridor along the Northern Silk Road, whose use was intensified in the first century BC after efforts by the Han Dynasty to control this route.[2]
Under the Han dynasty (206 BC--AD 220) a county there called Linqiang controlled the local Qiang tribesmen. It was again a frontier county under the Sui (581--618) and Tang (618--907) dynasties; during the 7th and early 8th centuries it was a center of constant warfare with the Tuyuhun and (later) the Tibetan peoples. In 763 it was overrun by the Tibetans and while under Tibetan control was known to the Chinese as Qingtangcheng. Recovered by the Song dynasty in 1104, it received the name Xining (meaning "peace in the west") and has been the seat of a prefecture or superior prefecture under that name since that time. With the rise of Tibetan Buddhism (Lamaism), which began in the 7th century AD, Xining became an important religious center; Qinghai's largest lamasery, a holy place to the Yellow Hat sect of Buddhists, was located at Kunbum, some 19 km to the southeast.
Xining has also been dubbed the Summer Resort Capital of China owing to its cool summer, with a cold semi-arid climate (Köppen BSk). Conditions are influenced by the aridity and high altitude. Lows are cold or cool throughout the year, and highs are often more than 15 °C (27 °F) warmer than lows. Monthly daily averages range from −7.4 °C (18.7 °F) in January to 17.3 °C (63.1 °F) in July; the year averages at 6.1 °C (43.0 °F). Rainfall falls mainly from May to September, and the area is often dry and sunny, with nearly 2680 hours of bright sunshine per year.

A railroad through the Himalayas on the ‘roof of the world’ and the highest railway line on earth that leads through breathtaking landscapes from Peking to Lhasa. listen (help·info)) (Chinese: 青海; pinyin: Qīnghǎi; Wade–Giles: Ching Hai, pronounced [tɕʰíŋxàɪ̯]); Oirat Mongolian: Көкнуур (transcribed into Cyrillic); Tibetan: མཚོ་སྔོན་; Salar:[citation needed]) is a province of the People's Republic of China, named after Qinghai Lake. It borders Gansu on the northeast, the Xinjiang Autonomous Region on the northwest, Sichuan on the southeast, and Tibet Autonomous Region on the southwest.
A large part of Qinghai's area, until the early 20th century most often referred to by its Mongol name Kokonur in English, lies outside of China proper and has been an ethnic melting pot for centuries, mixing Tibetan, Han Chinese, Mongol, and Turkic influences. The eastern part of the area of Qinghai was under the control of the Han Dynasty about 2000 years ago. It was a battleground during the Tang and subsequent Chinese dynasties when they fought against successive Tibetan tribes.
In the middle of 3rd century CE, nomadic people related to Xianbei migrated to pasture lands around Koko Nur (Qinghai Lake) and established Tuyuhun Kingdom. Since the 7th century, Tuyuhun Kingdom was attacked by both the Tibetan Empire and Tang Dynasty as both of them sought control over trade routes. Military conflicts severely weakened the kingdom and it was incorporated into the Tibetan Empire. After the disintegration of the Tibetan Empire, small local factions emerged. They were under titular authority of China and Tibet but maintained their autonomy. During the period of Mongol Yuan Dynasty's administrative rule of Tibet, majority of Qinghai belonged to one of the three commandaries of the Tibetan region divided at that time, namely Amdo (Tibetan: ཨ༌མདོ; Chinese: 安多; pinyin: Ānduō).

It was again a frontier county under the Sui (581--618) and Tang (618--907) dynasties; during the 7th and early 8th centuries it was a center of constant warfare with the Tuyuhun and (later) the Tibetan peoples. In 763 it was overrun by the Tibetans and while under Tibetan control was known to the Chinese as Qingtangcheng. Recovered by the Song dynasty in 1104, it received the name Xining (meaning "peace in the west") and has been the seat of a prefecture or superior prefecture under that name since that time. With the rise of Tibetan Buddhism (Lamaism), which began in the 7th century AD, Xining became an important religious center; Qinghai's largest lamasery, a holy place to the Yellow Hat sect of Buddhists, was located at Kunbum, some 19 km to the southeast.
Xining has also been dubbed the Summer Resort Capital of China owing to its cool summer, with a cold semi-arid climate (Köppen BSk). Conditions are influenced by the aridity and high altitude. Lows are cold or cool throughout the year, and highs are often more than 15 °C (27 °F) warmer than lows. Monthly daily averages range from −7.4 °C (18.7 °F) in January to 17.3 °C (63.1 °F) in July; the year averages at 6.1 °C (43.0 °F). Rainfall falls mainly from May to September, and the area is often dry and sunny, with nearly 2680 hours of bright sunshine per year.

Modern time wonder Quinghai Express in China.
The Third Millennium marked the inauguration of a unique train, the Tibet Qinghai Express that travels from China to Tibet. A railroad through the Himalayas on the ‘roof of the world’ and the highest railway line on earth that leads through breathtaking landscapes from Peking to Lhasa. The journey lasts about forty eight hours and includes two nights on the train.The journey begins on a road that for much of the time runs close to the railway line and travels across the high mountain passes of the Kulun Mountains and at a height of nearly five thousand metres above sea level is a remote high plateau that lies within an earthquake zone and often encounters severe snow storms. The train winds its way higher and higher from one high plateau to the next up to snow covered mountains and into the “home of the gods“. Along with the Great Wall Of China and the Three Gorges Dam, the Tibet Railroad is one of China’s greatest structures. The trains travel at the highest speeds that are possible on permafrost, a hundred kilometres an hour and sometimes even up to a hundred and twenty! After completing the Murray River solo Feb. 2012, I kind of like traveling alone. This is a raw, self filmed account of my 3 weeks skating / hitch hiking journey from Xining China to Chengdu China. No music to entertain you or Aaron playing his strum stick, just the wind, and my horrible singing, hahaha. There are going to be a total of 3 episodes, each released every week, I promise. I have them all done so it shall be easy to release them. I hope this video inspires you all to travel and challenge yourself may it be solo or with a group. It is protected by the highest mountains in the world and is a region that has developed a unique society whose philosophy, art and religious faith have earned much interest and respect.Lhasa is the capital of Tibet and also its largest city. The Barkhor Road extends for eight hundred metres around the Jokhang Temple and nearby Tsuklakhang Square. For the faithful a visit to the Jokhang Temple is the highlight of a long and arduous pilgrimage and the Dalai Lama once sat in its inner courtyard during the monks’ annual final examination, which was also a splendid festive event. On the other side of the Chakpori, a small mountain opposite Potala, is the seldom visited Sang Gya Thong Ku Temple that is somewhat hidden away and therefore off the tourist trail. This ‘temple of a thousand images of god’ is nevertheless very popular among devout Buddhists and is a place of silent prayer. The Yarlung Valley is full of history such as possessing the oldest field in Tibet, as well as the oldest village that is located at the foot of the country’s oldest fortress, Yom Bu La Khang, the rock palace of the country’s first mystic king. One of the largest monuments in Tibetan architecture is the unique Kumbum Chörten, a three-dimensional mandala that can be entered. Eyes decorate the upper part of the Stupa. The ritual walkabout begins on the lowest level with simple deities then follows the entire Pantheon of Tibet, immortalised in both sculptures and wall paintings. When deciding on a base in Southeast Asia we carefully thought about where to go. Soon it became a no brainer that Chiang Mai would be the perfect fit. Considering how affordable it is to live there in tandem with the amazing dining options certainly won us offer. Moreover, the Chiang Mai offers numerous top attractions and things to do. In our latest travel guide we attempt to highlight as many of our favorite attractions in Chiang Mai as possible:
1) Chiang Mai is famous for its night markets. We suggest starting off at the Sunday Night Market which is best explored from Thapea Gate. From handicrafts to silverware and from souvenirs to silks, you'll shop until you drop. In my opinion, an even better thing to do at the market is to indulge in as much Thai street food as possible.
2) Elephant tourism runs rampant in and around Chiang Mai. Unfortunately, the well being of the elephants is rarely a consideration. Visiting the Elephant Nature Park, known as an elephant sanctuary and rehabilitation center, is somewhere you can go to interact with elephants knowing full well they are being taken care of and not exploited. A trip to the park is a memorable experience that is both incredibly fun and extremely education.
3) From the roof of our apartment building we had often had unobstructed views of Doi Suthep. It was only a matter of time before we decide to take a Songthaew up to explore it on foot. Although it is very touristy, it is still well worth a visit - especially for the views of Chiang Mai!
4) Few cuisines are more famous around the world than Thai food. While you're in Chiang Mai be sure to take a cooking class to learn how to make all of your favorite Thai dishes. An even better idea is to go to the countryside where you can have a more authentic and rural cooking experience.
5) Although I love the Sunday Night Market my favorite night market in Chiang Mai happens on Saturday. Possibly because it is only a stone throw away from where we lived in Chiang Mai, I just enjoyed wandering through the maze of people and shops to eat as much Thai street food as possible.
6) You can't visit Chiang Mai without trying its most famous Northern Thai dish - Khao Soi. Crispy and soft noodles float around in a coconut milk base with various vegetables. It's delicious and one of the cheapest meal options in the city!
7) When you have time - and a friend to go with - reserve a table at a restaurant that specializes in Khantoke sets. Served with sticky rice and a plethora of small dishes you'll get a real sense of what Northern Thai food is all about.
8) Wander around the neighborhoods outside of the city center. A big part of why Chiang Mai is so charming has to do with its various neighborhoods. Get off the beaten path and just go explore around. Here we show you our neighborhood, which is not far from Chiang Mai South Gate.

Lhasa, the ‘holy city’ and ‘place of the gods’ is the capital of Tibet and also its largest city.The Jokhang Temple was originally built as a shrine for a special Buddha statue. In the seventh century the statue was a valuable wedding gift from the Chinese Emperor to Princess Wen Chen who had it transported to Lhasa. Around seven kilometres west of Lhasa’s city centre is the old summer residence of various former Dalai Lamas. The Norbuling Ka, Garden Of Gems, has been deserted since the end of the 1950’s because in 1959 the last Dalai Lama was forced into exile by the Chinese. A pilgrim trail leads up to Drepung Gonba that was built in 1416 by a scholar of Tsongkhapa who was the founder of the Gelug Order. Around seven kilometres west of Lhasa’s city centre is the old summer residence of various former Dalai Lamas. The Norbuling Ka, Garden Of Gems, has been deserted since the end of the 1950’s because in 1959 the last Dalai Lama was forced into exile by the Chinese. A pilgrim trail leads up to Drepung Gonba that was built in 1416 by a scholar of Tsongkhapa who was the founder of the Gelug Order. The small train begins to move away slowly and travels through Siliguri, the buildings of which were constructed after the railroad. There is little traffic as only one train travels into the mountains each morning with another returning in the evening. British engineering made this railroad possible, an eighty eight kilometre railroad connection to the mountain world of the Himalayas. The idea was to transport the world famous tea of the same name from Darjeeling, quickly, economically and safely to the coast from where it was shipped to the United Kingdom. The passage through Jore Bunglow is so narrow that the police must stop the road vehicles so that the train can travel through the village without danger. Several jeeps gather in the narrow street that is cloaked in a mysterious mist. Finally we arrive at Ghoom Station, at just below eight thousand feet the railroad’s highest point. Darjeeling short main street with its many shops and restaurants leads to Charastha Square in which noble buildings are reminiscent of glorious times gone by.Thank you the Darjeeling Himalayan Toy Train for a unique journey and one which will not easily be forgotten!

We signed a new 10-year cooperation agreement with Qinghai Provincial Civil Affairs Department (QPCAD) on 29 October 2015, signifying advancement in our cooperation. The agreement was signed by our Executive Director, Mrs. Cheung, with a representative from QPCAD, Vice-Counsel Sou Nan. We also had a cheque presentation ceremony afterwards. Mr. Sou Nan praised Christian Action for our significant contributions to the poor community, especially in terms of child welfare. Over the past 18 years, we have invested more than HK$72 million for the development of social welfare in Qinghai. We look forward to an even closer cooperation with the Qinghai Provincial Government and saving more children at risk.

Le lac Qinghai " Tso Ngonpo " au Tibet
Situé au nord-est du haut plateau tibétain, à 3 200 mètres d'altitude, le Qinghai est l'un des plus grands lacs salés du monde. Au milieu trône l'île de Haixinchan, un haut lieu du bouddhisme. Pour la première fois, un documentariste a pu en rapporter des images. Le lac abrite l'une des espèces de mammifères les plus menacées du monde, la gazelle de Przewalski. Au milieu trône l'île de Haixinchan, un haut lieu du bouddhisme.
Pour la première fois, un documentariste a pu en rapporter des images.
Le lac abrite l'une des espèces de mammifères les plus menacées du monde, la gazelle de Przewalski.
Sur les rives se dressent les tentes des nomades tibétains qui élèvent des yaks, des brebis, des chèvres et une race locale de chevaux connue pour son endurance.
Ce lac est le lieu de pèlerinage de nombreux pèlerins qui en font le tour.
Le géographe russe Nikolaï Prjevalski avait estimé que pour faire le tour complet du lac il fallait environ 8 jours à cheval et 15 en marchant, mais des pèlerins avancent des chiffres plus importants : 18 jours à cheval et 23 à pied.
Le lac est sacré dans les cultures lamaïques du bouddhisme tantrique (ou véhicule de diamant) mongole et tibétaine.
Il y a une île à l'ouest du lac, avec un temple et quelques ermitages dénommé « Mahādeva, le cœur du lac » (mTsho snying Ma hā de wa) qui était la résidence d'une vingtaine de moines. Aucun bateau n'était utilisé pendant l'été et l'île et le temple n'étaient accessibles à pied que pendant l'hiver, lorsque le lac était recouvert de glace.
La plupart des moines et des visiteurs venaient de Mongolie.
Un nomade a décrit la taille de l'île en utilisant cette métaphore : « Si au matin, une chèvre commençait à brouter le pâturage dans le sens des aiguilles d'une montre, et que ses enfants faisaient de même dans le sens inverse, ils se rencontreraient à la nuit, ce qui montre combien l'île est grande ».

A thirteen-year old Tibetan girl's (b. 1994) hair changing ritual in Brag dmar nang Tibetan Village, Dkra brjid Township, Khri kha County, Mtsho lho Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Mtsho sngon Province, PR China is described.
The ritual was held on the fifth day of the first lunar month, 2007. Brag dmar nang Tibetan Village is situated in the east of Dkra brjid Township, Khri kha County, Mtsho lho Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. It is forty kilometers from the village to Khri kha County Town, twenty kilometers to the township center, and 110 kilometers to Zi ling City, the provincial capital.
