Instead, in 1900, he directed his efforts to the Stawell Gift 130-yard (120-m) foot-race, winning in 12 seconds off a handicap of 10 yards. His performance was considered to be as good as Stan Rowley's times, which won the Australian amateur sprint titles that season. (Rowley went on to win three bronze medals in the sprints at the 1900 Paris Olympics). On the 27th of February 2004, Australian Olympic legend Shirley Strickland de la Hunty was laid to rest, her funeral attended by hundreds of mourners in Perth.
Strickland was Australia's golden girl of athletics, winning more Olympic medals than any other Australian in the sport. She was 78 years-old.

Shirley was the only daughter, the second of five children. She grew up on the family farm east of the wheatbelt town of Pithara, Western Australia.
Her father, Dave Strickland, while a worker at Kalgoorlie in the goldfields of Western Australia, Australia was also an athlete. He was unable to compete in the 1900 Summer Olympics because he lacked the money for a trip to Paris. Instead, in 1900, he directed his efforts to the Stawell Gift 130-yard (120-m) foot-race, winning in 12 seconds off a handicap of 10 yards. His performance was considered to be as good as Stan Rowley's times, which won the Australian amateur sprint titles that season. Meg traveled the nation and spoke with voters. During these campaigns, she saw a critical need for more focused problem solving in government by those with the tools to lead and the willingness and independence to challenge the status quo. Her decade at the helm of eBay came to a close just as California's growing economic crisis was unfolding. Job losses, undisciplined spending and the declining performance of California's schools were deeply troubling to Meg and she thought carefully about how she could lend her experiences to help. In February 2009, she announced her candidacy to become California's next governor. "We've got to focus -- we've got to create jobs, cut spending, and invest in fixing our educational system," Meg says.
