'The Book of Love' was written by Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields and features on Peter's album 'Scratch My Back'.
The 'Scratch My Back' album, released in 2010, was conceived as a songwriters exchange project where Peter covered some of his favourite songs and in return the artists he chose would then cover one of his songs. The reciprocal album 'And I'll Scratch Yours' was released in 2013.
This version of 'The Book of Love' was arranged by Nick Ingman with Peter Gabriel and Will Gregory and features the vocals of Melanie Gabriel.

There was a clip in "green and white" on youtube that had more cutaways to the audience than anything. They also edited out a verse. So, I made it true black and white, and edited the bits together to make a whole performance. The original lofi audio was from the TV studio and had claps mixed in, so I flew in the original track and compressed it a little. I made this because there were no real videos of this great band performing this great tune. The song was inspired by a Pepsodent toothpaste commercial. Book of Love is a 1990 romantic comedy film directed by New Line Cinema producer Robert Shaye. It is based on the autobiographical novel Jack in the Box by William Kotzwinkle (the novel's name was changed to Book of Love during this film's original release).
The film was originally PG-13, but subsequent DVD releases have been the R-rated Director's Cut (R for sexual content and language). It stars Chris Young, Keith Coogan, and John Cameron Mitchell.
Jack Twiller (Michael McKean) gets greetings from a long gone high school girlfriend. This makes him open his school's yearbook - his "Book of Love" - and remember the old times, way back in the 50s, when he was in his last year of high school (Chris Young) and his family just moved to the town. He hung out with geeky Paul Kane and tried to get the attention of Lily (Josie Bissett), who unfortunately was together with bully Angelo (Beau Dremann).

There was a clip in "green and white" on youtube that had more cutaways to the audience than anything. They also edited out a verse. So, I made it true black and white, and edited the bits together to make a whole performance. The original lofi audio was from the TV studio and had claps mixed in, so I flew in the original track and compressed it a little. I made this because there were no real videos of this great band performing this great tune. The song was inspired by a Pepsodent toothpaste commercial.
