RTÉ Television is a department of Ireland's national broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ). The first channel to broadcast was Telefís Éireann which began broadcasting on 31 December 1961. Since the 1960s, RTÉ Television has rapidly changed to include further television channels and provide television services with the latest digital technologies.
Proposed Channels
With the launch of digital terrestrial television in the Republic of Ireland, Saorview will give RTÉ the opportunity to offer viewers greater choice. In the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland RTÉ aspire to provide viewers with additional channels which will include a high-definition channel RTÉ Two HD,RTÉ Plus, a combined offering of RTÉ's children's services which includes RTÉjr and TRTÉ and RTÉ Aertel Digital which will include an enhanced digital teletext service. Existing services include RTÉ One, RTÉ Two and RTÉ News Now.
New Season may refer to:
Television is a telecommunication medium used for transmitting sound with moving images in monochrome (black-and-white), or in colour, and in two or three dimensions. It can refer to a television set, a television program, or the medium of television transmission. Television is a mass medium, for entertainment, education, news and advertising.
Television became available in crude experimental forms in the late 1920s. After World War II, an improved form became popular in the United States and Britain, and television sets became commonplace in homes, businesses, and institutions. During the 1950s, television was the primary medium for influencing public opinion. In the mid-1960s, color broadcasting was introduced in the US and most other developed countries. The availability of storage media such as VHS tape (1976), DVDs (1997), and high-definition Blu-ray Discs (2006) enabled viewers to watch recorded material such as movies. At the end of the first decade of the 2000s, digital television transmissions greatly increased in popularity. Another development was the move from standard-definition television (SDTV) (576i, with 576 interlaced lines of resolution and 480i) to high-definition television (HDTV), which provides a resolution that is substantially higher. HDTV may be transmitted in various formats: 1080p, 1080i and 720p. Since 2010, with the invention of smart television, Internet television has increased the availability of television programs and movies via the Internet through services such as Netflix, iPlayer, Hulu, Roku and Chromecast.
No Disco is RTÉ's former flagship music television programme, broadcast on Irish television channel, Network 2, from 1993 - 2003. It was presented by Donal Dineen, Uaneen Fitzsimons and, following the death of Fitzsimons, Lawrence "Leagues" O'Toole. When Fitzsimons died in a car crash in November 2000, there was a gap in programming for some months afterwards, until the series returned with O'Toole as presenter on 28 February 2001. Musicians and bands such as David Gray,The Frames, David Kitt and The Divine Comedy attribute a large portion of their success to exposure on No Disco, and these were among the thousands who lent their support to a campaign to have the show retained by RTÉ. However, the show was cancelled in 2003, in a move that caused much controversy among its viewers — at the time it was the only RTÉ show showcasing alternative music and there was no replacement show lined up to take its place. In recent years The Last Broadcast, Other Voices, and (When) Under Ether have acted as some form of replacements for the gap that has emerged but none with the same success.
Raidió Teilifís Éireann (Irish pronunciation: [ˈradʲo ˈtʲɛlʲəfʲiːʃ ˈeːrʲən]; Radio [and] Television of Ireland; abbreviated as RTÉ) is a semi-state company and the national public service broadcaster of Ireland. It both produces programmes and broadcasts them on television, radio and the Internet. The radio service began on 1 January 1926, while regular television broadcasts began on 31 December 1961, making it one of the oldest continuously operating public service broadcasters in the world. RTÉ also publishes a magazine called the RTÉ Guide, published weekly, which is orientated around RTÉ television and radio.
RTÉ is financed by a television licence fee and through advertising. Some RTÉ services are only funded by advertising, while other RTÉ services are only funded by the licence fee. RTÉ is a statutory body, run by a board appointed by the Government of Ireland. General management of the organisation is in the hands of the Executive Board headed by the Director-General. RTÉ is regulated by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. Radio Éireann, RTÉ's predecessor and at the time a section of the Department of Posts and Telegraphs, was one of 23 founding organisations of the European Broadcasting Union in 1950.

The Cistercian Sisters of St Mary's Abbey, Glencairn, Co Waterford, in Ireland live an austere life based on the Rule of St Benedict, which has barely changed in over 1000 years. Rooted in community, work, prayer and silence, some may see it as a retreat from the world, but the nuns themselves believe this is the best contribution they can make to that world, and the best way for them to get close to God. Over the course of a year, they gave RTÉ's religious documentary series Would You Believe? unique access to film their way of life. This is the resulting film.
Trigger Warning for SEVERE IRONY. "Goebbels' plans backfired, as audiences in the occupied countries saw through the propaganda, and associated the British villains with the German oppressor." Nazis and fascists are vile creatures. === From RTE Description: How Goebbels' Ministry for Propaganda made feature films about Irish rebels to foment anti-British sentiment. Some decades ago, a couple of feature films were produced about Ireland's struggle for independence. In these films you could see Irish working-class folk being oppressed by the cruel and inhuman British occupier, and young Irish revolutionaries laying down their lives for their country. At first glance, these look like any of a series of ordinary rebel movies. The particularity about these films, however, is that they wer...
