THE TG4 series on past Irish Presidents, which is entitled simply ‘Uachtaráin’ and which has been showing for the past six weeks, is fascinating, nostalgic, entertaining and insightful. ‘Uachtaráin’ is a masterpiece on many levels. For someone who has patience for little TV watching, I have found it compelling to the point of distraction from my impatience.
The office of the President of Ireland is usually regarded with a sort of distant respect, as one might regard a kindly old aunt, who is venerable and sweet but past being taken seriously. Until Mary Robinson’s inauguration, the presidency was viewed as a retirement home for once-active, perhaps even fiery, politicians, who had earned the kind of distinguished career-conclusion that the position offered.

Mary Therese Winifred Robinson (née Bourke; Irish: Máire Bean Mhic Róibín;[3] born 21 May 1944 in Ballina, County Mayo) served as the seventh, and first female, President of Ireland from 1990 to 1997, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, from 1997 to 2002. She first rose to prominence as an academic, barrister, campaigner and member of the Irish Senate (1969–1989). She defeated Fianna Fáil's Brian Lenihan and Fine Gael's Austin Currie in the 1990 presidential election becoming, as an Independent candidate nominated by the Labour Party, the Workers' Party and independent senators, the first elected president in the office's history not to have had the support of Fianna Fáil. Mary Robinson, the first woman President of Ireland (1990-1997) and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (1997-2002), has spent most of her life as a human rights advocate.
Born in Ballina, County Mayo (1944), she was educated at the University of Dublin (Trinity College), Kings Inns Dublin and Harvard Law School to which she won a fellowship in 1967.
As an academic (Trinity College Law Faculty 1968-90), legislator (Senator 1969-89) and barrister (1967-90. Senior Counsel 1980, English Bar 1973) she has always sought to use law as an instrument for social change, arguing landmark cases before the European Court of Human Rights as well as in the Irish courts and the European Court in Luxembourg. A committed European, she
also served on expert European Community and Irish parliamentary committees.
In 1988 Mary Robinson and her husband founded the Irish Centre for European Law at the Trinity College. Ten years later she was elected Chancellor of the University.
The recipient of numerous honours and awards throughout the world, Mary Robinson is a member of the Elders, co-founder and former Chair of the Council of Women World
Leaders and Vice President of the Club of Madrid. She is chair of the GAVI Alliance Board. She chairs the Fund for Global Human Rights and is Honorary President of Oxfam
International, and Patron of the International Community of Women Living with AIDS (ICW). She is President of the International Commission of Jurists.
Now based in New York, Mary Robinson is currently the President of Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative. Its mission is to make human rights the compass which charts a course for globalization that is fair, just and benefits all.

The Irish President, Mary Robinson, has met Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace on her four-day visit to Britain.
She is the first Irish head of state to make an official trip to Britain.
Earlier, Robinson met the opposition leader Tony Blair.
President Robinson is on the second of her four day visit to Britain.
She arrived at Buckingham Palace for lunch as London's temperature hit the mid 70s (around 24 centigrade).
Observers are seeing the visit as a sign of warming relations between London and Dublin.
Her trip is the first official visit to Britain by an Irish President.
Irish Foreign Minister, Dick Spring, was also at Buckingham Palace to attend the lunch.
Before lunch, President Robinson was saluted by the 1st Battalion Irish Guards.
She then inspected the 100 members of the Irish Guards, while a band played Irish tunes.
Earlier, she met opposition Labour leader, Tony Blair, for a half-hour meeting, in which they reportedly discussed next Monday's all-party talks on the Northern Ireland conflict.
Robinson is due to leave London tomorrow for a visit to Yorkshire.

Mary Robinson (née Darby) (27 November 1757? – 26 December 1800) was an English poet and novelist. During her lifetime she was known as "the English Sappho". She was also known for her role as Perdita (heroine of Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale) in 1779 and as the first public mistress of King George IV.
Mary Darby was born in Bristol, England to John Darby, a naval captain, and Hester Seys. According to her memoirs, Mary gives her birth in 1758 but the year 1757 seems more likely according to recently published research (see appendix to Byrne, 2005). Her father deserted her mother and took on a mistress when Mary was still a child. The family hoped for a reconciliation, but Captain Darby made it clear that this was not going to happen. Without the support of her husband, Mrs Darby supported herself and the five children born of the marriage by starting a school for young girls (where Mary taught by her 14th birthday). However, during one of his brief returns to the family, Captain Darby had the school closed (which he was entitled to do by English law). Mary, who at one point attended a school run by the social reformer Hannah More, came to the attention of actor David Garrick.

THE TG4 series on past Irish Presidents, which is entitled simply ‘Uachtaráin’ and which has been showing for the past six weeks, is fascinating, nostalgic, entertaining and insightful. ‘Uachtaráin’ is a masterpiece on many levels. For someone who has patience for little TV watching, I have found it compelling to the point of distraction from my impatience. The office of the President of Ireland is usually regarded with a sort of distant respect, as one might regard a kindly old aunt, who is venerable and sweet but past being taken seriously. 12 September 1997 Mary Therese Winifred Robinson (née Bourke; Irish: Máire Bean Mhic Róibín;[3] born 21 May 1944 in Ballina, County Mayo) served as the seventh, and first female, President of Ireland from 1990 to 1997, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, from 1997 to 2002. She first rose to prominence as an academic, barrister, campaigner and member of the Irish Senate (1969–1989). She defeated Fianna Fáil's Brian Lenihan and Fine Gael's Austin Currie in the 1990 presidential election becoming, as an Independent candidate nominated by the Labour Party, the Workers' Party and independent senators, the first elected president in the office's history not to have had the support of Fianna Fáil. Born in Ballina, County Mayo (1944), she was educated at the University of Dublin (Trinity College), Kings Inns Dublin and Harvard Law School to which she won a fellowship in 1967.
As an academic (Trinity College Law Faculty 1968-90), legislator (Senator 1969-89) and barrister (1967-90. Senior Counsel 1980, English Bar 1973) she has always sought to use law as an instrument for social change, arguing landmark cases before the European Court of Human Rights as well as in the Irish courts and the European Court in Luxembourg. A committed European, she
also served on expert European Community and Irish parliamentary committees.
In 1988 Mary Robinson and her husband founded the Irish Centre for European Law at the Trinity College. Ten years later she was elected Chancellor of the University.
The recipient of numerous honours and awards throughout the world, Mary Robinson is a member of the Elders, co-founder and former Chair of the Council of Women World
Leaders and Vice President of the Club of Madrid. She is chair of the GAVI Alliance Board. She chairs the Fund for Global Human Rights and is Honorary President of Oxfam
International, and Patron of the International Community of Women Living with AIDS (ICW). She is President of the International Commission of Jurists.
Now based in New York, Mary Robinson is currently the President of Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative. Its mission is to make human rights the compass which charts a course for globalization that is fair, just and benefits all.
