Renaisa S. Anthony MD, MPH is the Interim Director and appointed Deputy Director of the UNMC Center for Reducing Health Disparities (CRHD) in the College of Public Health. She is a licensed physician, public health practitioner, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Promotion. She earned her medical degree at the University of Chicago, public health degree at Harvard, medical training at Vanderbilt, and policy fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She is committed to improving the health of women, children, families and communities and has dedicated such efforts both internationally and nationally at the NIH, Office of the Surgeon General, and Capitol Hill.
In this talk, Dr. Anthony discusses the impact of race, gender, and background on her life and the lives of the people she serves.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. On January 31, 2013, The Colorado Trust hosted a Learning Lunch featuring Paula Braveman, MD, a leading national expert on health equity, as she discussed barriers to achieving optimal health faced by racial and ethnic minorities, low-income and other disadvantaged populations. Dr. Braveman serves as director of the Center on Social Disparities in Health within the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. She is widely renowned for her efforts to help policy and health leaders better understand and address wide and persistent disparities in health and health care between social groups in the United States and worldwide.
T.R. Reid moderated a discussion with Dr. Braveman following her initial remarks. Reid is well known for his long-time reporting for the Washington Post and NPR commentaries, and author of such works as "The Healing of America: A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper, and Fairer Health Care."

The child is at the center of efforts to achieve Education for All (EFA) by 2015 and to address the Millennium Development Goals of universal basic education and gender equality in education access. Health, Equity, and Education for All delves into this issue and asks, Given equal education opportunities, does every child have an equal chance to learn? The evidence shows that the answer is a resounding no—poor children, because they suffer most from ill health and malnutrition, are also less able to attend and complete school, and to learn while there.
But governments and development partners like the World Bank are working together towards ensuring that every child is able to stay in school long enough to learn. The positive experience of school health and school feeding programs in low-income countries shows that carefully designed programs can provide a cost-effective solution. Moreover, these programs are intrinsically pro-poor, as their greatest benefits are for the poor, the sick, and the hungry. It is clear that school health programs are necessary to achieve equity in education for all children.
This film sets the stage for the corresponding full-length publication, Health, Equity, and Education for All: How School Health and School Feeding Programs are Leveling the Playing Field, which explores how programs can be implemented at meaningful scale in the poorest countries that need them the most.

The Center for Health Equity invests in key neighborhoods—or the places in our city that have been deprived of sufficient resources and attention, and which bear the highest burden of disease. These areas include North and Central Brooklyn, the South Bronx, and East and Central Harlem. In order to “right” this injustice, the Center for Health Equity has district public health offices (DPHOs) in each of these neighborhoods. Having the DPHOs located in the neighborhood offers the ability to establish and engage community partners. By engaging partners, collective impact in our health equity work is possible. Featuring out reach programes like “Shop Health”, a department initiative that aims to change the retail environment to introduce healthier options in local bodegas. And The Brownsville Bike Lanes, 28 miles of bike lanes introduced around the city, to allow residents to ride bikes and encourage a healthy lifestyle.

Health equity (related, slightly more neutral terms include healthcare inequality and healthcare disparities) refers to the study of differences in the quality of health and health care across different populations. This may include differences in the "presence of disease, health outcomes, or access to health care" across racial, ethnic, sexual orientation and socioeconomic groups. The term "disparities" generally refers to differences of which the writer disapproves; thus, for instance, some definitions of "disparities" do not include differences due to differing access (e.g., due to socioeconomic class).
Differences between populations in the presence of disease and health outcomes are well-documented in many areas. In the United States, disparities are well documented in minority populations such as African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and Latinos, with these groups having higher incidence of chronic diseases, higher mortality, and poorer overall health outcomes. For example, the cancer incidence rate among African Americans is 10% higher than among whites, and adult African Americans and Latinos have approximately twice the risk as whites of developing diabetes. Similarly, differences in the overall level of health in individuals also exist between differing social classes, with lower-status socioeconomic groups generally having poorer health and higher rates of chronic illness including obesity, diabetes, and hypertension; whether these are considered disparities to be eliminated depends on the author.

The child is at the center of efforts to achieve Education for All (EFA) by 2015 and to address the Millennium Development Goals of universal basic education and gender equality in education access. Health, Equity, and Education for All delves into this issue and asks, Given equal education opportunities, does every child have an equal chance to learn? The evidence shows that the answer is a resounding no—poor children, because they suffer most from ill health and malnutrition, are also less able to attend and complete school, and to learn while there.
But governments and development partners like the World Bank are working together towards ensuring that every child is able to stay in school long enough to learn. The positive experience of school health and school feeding programs in low-income countries shows that carefully designed programs can provide a cost-effective solution. Moreover, these programs are intrinsically pro-poor, as their greatest benefits are for the poor, the sick, and the hungry. It is clear that school health programs are necessary to achieve equity in education for all children.

She is President, American Public Health Association, member of the National Board of Public Health Examiners, 2000-2010 research director on social determinants of health and equity within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Summary: The three dimensions of health intervention are providing health services, addressing the social determinants of health (including poverty), and addressing the social determinants of equity (including racism). Racism—including institutionalized, personally-mediated, and internalized racism—is a root cause of “racial”/ethnic differences in health outcomes. Dr. Camara Jones as she presents analogies and allegoriesto help illustrate the three levels of racism and the impacts of racism on the health and wellbeing of our nation.
