Sylvia Young

Sylvia Young OBE (born Sylvia Bakal 18 September 1939 in Whitechapel, London) is the founder and principal of Sylvia Young Theatre School in London, England.

Young founded her theatre school in 1981 in Drury Lane, London, before moving to its current Marylebone premises in 1983. The school is co-educational and provides a combination of academic and vocational classes for children aged 10 to 16 years. The academic curriculum encompasses GCSEs, while the vocational curriculum teaches acting, dance and music. Many SYTS students have gone on to become successful in the performing arts world, including Amy Winehouse, Denise Van Outen, Billie Piper, former Spice Girl Emma Bunton, I Am Number Four star Alex Pettyfer, Dawn from EastEnders Kara Tointon, Stacey from EastEnders Lacey Turner, Chenelle Olaiya, McFly member Tom Fletcher, ex Busted bass player Matt Willis, member of The Saturdays, Vanessa White and member of The Wanted, Nathan Sykes. The film High School Musical 3 features an SYTS pupil, Jemma McKenzie-Brown.

Sylvia Young Theatre School is an independent school in the Marylebone area, London, England. It is a specialist performing arts school named after its founder and principal Sylvia Young.

Outline

The Sylvia Young Theatre School was founded in 1972 with part-time classes in East London. It was established as a full-time school in 1981 on Drury Lane but due to expansion it moved to Rossmore Road, Marylebone in 1983. The school moved premises once again in 2010 to a converted church in Nutford Place, Westminster. The school aims to provide a sound basis on which to build a career in performance media (theatre, television etc.), whilst ensuring that academic studies are of a consistently high standard.

Students either attend the full-time school (students aged 10 to 16 years), the part-time school on Thursday evenings or Saturdays (students aged 4 to 18 years) or holiday schools (students aged 7 to 18 years). Experience days and adult classes are also available.

Students from the Sylvia Young Theatre School have appeared in TV, film and theatre productions, including main roles in Matilda, Billy Elliott, The Lion King, The Bodyguard, Les Misérables, and Charlie & The Chocolate Factory. Alumni include National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company actors and performers in TV and music, including Billie Piper, Denise Van Outen, Tom Fletcher, Matt Willis, Amy Winehouse, Rita Ora, Nathan Sykes, Jenna Russell, Emma Bunton, and members of the cast of East Enders past and present.

The Stage

The Stage is a British weekly newspaper and website covering the entertainment industry, and particularly theatre. It was founded in 1880. It contains news, reviews, opinion, features, and recruitment advertising, mainly directed at those who work in theatre and the performing arts.

The first edition of The Stage was published (under the title The Stage Directory – a London and Provincial Theatrical Advertiser) on 1 February 1880 at a cost of 3 old pence for twelve pages. Publication was monthly until 25 March 1881, when the first weekly edition was produced. At the same time, the name was shortened to The Stage and the publication numbering restarted at number 1.

The publication was a joint venture between founding editor Charles Lionel Carson (then aged 33) and business manager Maurice Comerford (26), and operated from offices opposite the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.

The Stage entered a crowded market, with many other theatre titles (including The Era) in circulation. Undercutting their rivals, Carson and Comerford dropped the price of the paper to one penny and was soon the only remaining title in its field.
