The alloy brass can be made by melting copper and zinc metals together to form a homogeneous mixture.
In the video we start with a regular penny and then add it to a solution of aqueous sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Zinc powder is also added to the solution. The mixture is heated and the dissolved zinc coats the penny giving it a silver appearance.
Once the penny is coated with zinc we can heat it in a Bunsen burner until the zinc layer melts into the copper beneath. When this happens the penny becomes gold colored. The gold is actually brass, a mixture of zinc and copper.
If we left the penny coated in zinc it would eventually react with the oxygen in the air and corrode. The alloy brass will retain this color indefinitely.

We got in touch with local alloy wheel specialists Rim Solutions, popped down to see them and had a chat about what they could do for us. We were impressed! Not only by the range of finishes available but by the amazing contrast between the tatty wheels being dropped in by customers and the pristine refurbished examples being handed back. I've wanted to try and refurbish a set of BMW 44 style alloys for some time. This is video is the first video of 2 recording the process I went through to get these battered, gutter rash, kerb damaged alloys back to their former glory.
This is my first attempt at refurbishing alloys. I hope you enjoy the videos and maybe feel inspired to try this yourself.

Don't buy the expensive crap (that incidentally DOESNT work half as good as this) ..get some Distilled Vinegar - about 49p a bottle (Tesco) - and clean all your alloys EASILLY for around 2p!!

The alloy brass can be made by melting copper and zinc metals together to form a homogeneous mixture.
In the video we start with a regular penny and then add it to a solution of aqueous sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Zinc powder is also added to the solution. The mixture is heated and the dissolved zinc coats the penny giving it a silver appearance.
Once the penny is coated with zinc we can heat it in a Bunsen burner until the zinc layer melts into the copper beneath. When this happens the penny becomes gold colored. The gold is actually brass, a mixture of zinc and copper.
If we left the penny coated in zinc it would eventually react with the oxygen in the air and corrode. The alloy brass will retain this color indefinitely.

It claimed to let you repair scraped or gouged BMW and MINI silver alloy wheels all by yourself, with excellent results. "Aw, #$%&!!!" You just scraped one of your wheels on a curb. We know exactly how you feel. That's why in 2009, on one of our trips to Germany, we were excited to discover a new wheel repair kit. It claimed to let you repair scraped or gouged BMW and MINI silver alloy wheels all by yourself, with excellent results. We were a bit skeptical, but with replacement wheels costing anywhere from $300--600 apiece, if this kit worked 75% as well as was claimed, it could save BMW and MINI owners a ton of dough.
We brought a kit home with us and gave it to one of our Advisors to test. He was very impressed, saying, "From 5 feet away my roommates could not tell where the repair was done. When using these cleaners it is good to have a variety of wheel brushes to help clean the alloys as well. These brushes can get into the inner part of the wheel and agitate any brake dust.
Tip #1 -- Spray liberally from the bottom of the wheel up
Tip #2 -- Use a brush to agitate any dirt or brake dust
