One of the legendary liaisons of the 20th century between conductor and orchestra is that of Sir Georg Solti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Solti himself described it as a "love affair" and he influenced the orchestra with the elegance and impeccable taste of Central European music making.
His remarkable partnership with the Chicago Symphony began in 1954 and he was named Music Director in 1969, a post he held for a phenomenal 22 years.
As one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, his readings of the major composers of classical music have often been referred to. The present recordings on DVD show conductor and orchestra at the peak of their music making with three unforgettable works.
Recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall in London 1978 was a concert of Beethoven's beautiful First Symphony. It is sometimes labelled a " farewell to the 18th century", as it still follows the structure of 18th-century symphonic music.
The concert recording from Chicago in 1979 features two of Schubert's symphonies, his "Unfinished" Symphony No. 8, one of the most universally beloved works in the symphonic repertoire and his lesser played Sixth Symphony in C major, known as the "Little Symphony", which he wrote before he was 21 years of age.
Directed by Humphrey Burton, the DVD features almost 100 minutes of concert performance plus an eight minute introduction to Schubert's Symphonies Nos.6&8 by Sir Georg Solti as a bonus film.
A fitting hommage to Sir Georg Solti and his special relationship to „his" Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Solti achieved great success with the first complete recording of Das Rheingold in 1958 after which his reputation for recording Wagner escalated. His was also known for his dramatic and expressive performances of works by Richard Strauss, demonstrated by this exciting performance of Don Juan, with revealing bonus rehearsal material and an interview by John Culshaw. The 1985 performance of Beethoven 5 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra is equally thrilling, filmed during his tenure as Chief Conductor of the Chicago Symphony, with whom he recorded the full set of Beethoven Symphonies.

Sir Georg Solti, KBE, 
/ˈdʒɔrdʒ ˈʃɒlti/ (21 October 1912 – 5 September 1997) was an orchestral and operatic conductor, best known for his appearances with opera companies in Munich, Frankfurt and London, and as a long-serving music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Born in Hungary, he studied in Budapest with Béla Bartók, Leo Weiner and Ernő Dohnányi. In the 1930s, he was a répétiteur at the Hungarian State Opera and worked at the Salzburg Festival for Arturo Toscanini. His career was interrupted by the rise of the Nazis, and because he was a Jew he fled the increasingly restrictive anti-semitic laws in 1938. After conducting a season of Russian ballet in London at the Royal Opera House he found refuge in Switzerland, where he remained during the Second World War. Not permitted to conduct there, he earned a living as a pianist.
After the war Solti was appointed musical director of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich from 1946. In 1952 he moved to the Frankfurt Opera, where he remained in charge for nine years. He took German citizenship in 1953. In 1961 he became musical director of the Covent Garden Opera Company in London. During his ten-year tenure, he introduced changes that saw standards raised to the highest international levels. Under his musical directorship the status of the company was recognised with the grant of the title "the Royal Opera". He became a British subject in 1972.

One of the legendary liaisons of the 20th century between conductor and orchestra is that of Sir Georg Solti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Sir Georg Solti, KBE, play /ˈdʒɔrdʒ ˈʃɒlti/ (21 October 1912 -- 5 September 1997) was a Hungarian-British orchestral and operatic conductor, best known for his appearances with opera companies in Munich, Frankfurt and London, and as a long-serving music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Born in Hungary, he studied in Budapest with Béla Bartók, Leo Weiner and Ernő Dohnányi. In the 1930s, he was a répétiteur at the Hungarian State Opera and worked at the Salzburg Festival for Arturo Toscanini. His career was interrupted by the rise of the Nazis, and because he was a Jew he fled the increasingly restrictive anti-semitic laws in 1938. His remarkable partnership with the Chicago Symphony began in 1954 and he was named Music Director in 1969, a post he held for a phenomenal 22 years.
As one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, his readings of the major composers of classical music have often been referred to. The present recordings on DVD show conductor and orchestra at the peak of their music making with three unforgettable works.
Recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall in London 1978 was a concert of Beethoven's beautiful First Symphony. It is sometimes labelled a " farewell to the 18th century", as it still follows the structure of 18th-century symphonic music.
The concert recording from Chicago in 1979 features two of Schubert's symphonies, his "Unfinished" Symphony No. 8, one of the most universally beloved works in the symphonic repertoire and his lesser played Sixth Symphony in C major, known as the "Little Symphony", which he wrote before he was 21 years of age.
Directed by Humphrey Burton, the DVD features almost 100 minutes of concert performance plus an eight minute introduction to Schubert's Symphonies Nos.6&8 by Sir Georg Solti as a bonus film.

As one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, his readings of the major composers of classical music have often been referred to. The present recordings on DVD show conductor and orchestra at the peak of their music making with three unforgettable works.
Recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall in London 1978 was a concert of Beethoven's beautiful First Symphony. It is sometimes labelled a " farewell to the 18th century", as it still follows the structure of 18th-century symphonic music.
The concert recording from Chicago in 1979 features two of Schubert's symphonies, his "Unfinished" Symphony No. 8, one of the most universally beloved works in the symphonic repertoire and his lesser played Sixth Symphony in C major, known as the "Little Symphony", which he wrote before he was 21 years of age.
Directed by Humphrey Burton, the DVD features almost 100 minutes of concert performance plus an eight minute introduction to Schubert's Symphonies Nos.6&8 by Sir Georg Solti as a bonus film.
A fitting hommage to Sir Georg Solti and his special relationship to „his" Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Bruckner on his composing style: "They want me to write differently. Certainly I could, but I must not. God has chosen me from thousands and given me, of all people, this talent. It is to Him that I must give account. How then would I stand there before Almighty God, if I followed the others and not Him?"

Born in Hungary, he studied in Budapest with Béla Bartók, Leo Weiner and Ernő Dohnányi. In the 1930s, he was a répétiteur at the Hungarian State Opera and worked at the Salzburg Festival for Arturo Toscanini. His career was interrupted by the rise of the Nazis, and because he was a Jew he fled the increasingly restrictive anti-semitic laws in 1938. After conducting a season of Russian ballet in London at the Royal Opera House he found refuge in Switzerland, where he remained during the Second World War. Prohibited from conducting there, he earned a living as a pianist. After the war, Solti was appointed musical director of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich in 1946. In 1952 he moved to the Frankfurt Opera, where he remained in charge for nine years. He took German citizenship in 1953. In 1961 he became musical director of the Covent Garden Opera Company in London. During his ten-year tenure, he introduced changes that raised standards to the highest international levels. Under his musical directorship the status of the company was recognised with the grant of the title "the Royal Opera". He became a British subject in 1972. In 1969 Solti was appointed music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, a post he held for 22 years. He restored the orchestra's reputation after it had been in decline for most of the previous decade. He became the orchestra's music director laureate on his retirement in 1991. During his time with the Chicago orchestra, he also had shorter spells in charge of the Orchestre de Paris and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Known in his early years for the intensity of his music making, Solti was widely considered to have mellowed as a conductor in later years. Wendy Putnam was born in Wisconsin and began her study of the violin at the age of three. She made her first appearance in the concert hall at nine when she was invited to perform as a soloist with the Green Bay Symphony. By 16 she enrolled at Louisiana State University under the guidance of Professor Sally O'Reilly, where she completed both her bachelor's and master's degrees.
Shortly thereafter, she joined the New World Symphony and served as concertmaster for two international tours and for a recording, which was later nominated for a Grammy award. She performed as soloist with the New World Symphony Chamber Players and collaborated with such artists as Sir Georg Solti, Josef Swensen, Phillipe Entremont, and Benjamin Pasternack in chamber concerts both in the U.S. and abroad. She worked under the direction of conductors Michael Tilson Thomas, Seiji Ozawa, Leonard Bernstein, Christoph Eschenbach, and Mstislav Rostropovich. Walter Hilgers, born 1959 in Stolberg / Rhineland, received his instrumental education in Tuba, Double Bass and Piano at University of Music Aachen.
He was engaged in 1978 by the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra as their tuba player and started teaching at the Robert Schumann University of Music, Düsseldorf. One year later he was invited to play with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra, to which he belonged for the following twelve years.
Further engagements led him to the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra, to the NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg and to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
Within 30 years of orchestral activity he played under the button of conductors such as Herbert von Karajan, Lorin Maazel, Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, Andre Previn, Pierre Boulez, Georg Solti, James Levine, Seiji Ozawa, Riccardo Muti, Bernhard Haitink and Günter Wand.
As a founding member he belonged more than 25 years to the German Brass ensemble. As well as this, Walter Hilgers imparts his knowledge and his experience to young, talented musicians with great enthusiasm. He is renowned as a prominent pedagogue.
From 1978 he taught at the music university Düsseldorf, Aachen and Lubeck, and from1989 until 1995 as a professor for tuba and chamber music at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg. Since 1995 he is professor for chamber music at the University of Music Franz Liszt Weimar. In recent years his international teaching and concert activities as soloist, chamber musician and conductor have led him to most European countries as well as U.S.A., Latin America and Asia. At the beginning of the season 2007/08 Walter Hilgers has become the Principal Guest Conductor of the State Philharmonic Orchestra Timisoara /Romania

Superstar Angela Gheorghiu, the most glamorous and gifted opera singer of our time, was born in Adjud, Romania. From early childhood it was obvious that her destiny was music.
Gheorghiu made her international debut in 1992 at Royal Opera, Covent Garden (Mimì, La Bohème), at the Metropolitan Opera, and at the Vienna State Opera. It was in the Royal Opera, Covent Garden that she first sang her much acclaimed La Traviata in 1994, when the BBC cleared out its schedules to broadcast the opera.
Her first exclusive recording contract was in 1995 with Decca. The second was in 1998 with EMI, for whom she made several recordings released on CD and DVD. The latest releases include the complete opera recordings of L'Amico Fritz by Pietro Mascagni and Fedora by Umberto Giordano (both with Deutsche Grammophon), the live performance of La Rondine at the Metropolitan Opera (2009), as well as Faust from Royal Opera House (2004), released on DVD by EMI Classics in 2011. Adriana Lecouvreur (a Royal Opera production recorded in 2010) was released on DVD in 2012.
Having always earned spectacular reviews on her career, Gheorghiu was honored with La Medaille Vermeille de la Ville de Paris and was appointed an Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres and Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture and by her native country Romania. In December 2010 she was awarded the honorific title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Arts in Iasi (Romania) and the Star of Romania, the highest decoration given by the by the President of Romania. In 2012 she received the Nihil Sine Deo royal decoration from HRH King Michael I of Romania.

Superstar Angela Gheorghiu, the most glamorous and gifted opera singer of our time, was born in Adjud, Romania. From early childhood it was obvious that her destiny was music.
Gheorghiu made her international debut in 1992 at Royal Opera, Covent Garden (Mimì, La Bohème), at the Metropolitan Opera, and at the Vienna State Opera. It was in the Royal Opera, Covent Garden that she first sang her much acclaimed La Traviata in 1994, when the BBC cleared out its schedules to broadcast the opera.
Her first exclusive recording contract was in 1995 with Decca. The second was in 1998 with EMI, for whom she made several recordings released on CD and DVD. The latest releases include the complete opera recordings of L'Amico Fritz by Pietro Mascagni and Fedora by Umberto Giordano (both with Deutsche Grammophon), the live performance of La Rondine at the Metropolitan Opera (2009), as well as Faust from Royal Opera House (2004), released on DVD by EMI Classics in 2011. Adriana Lecouvreur (a Royal Opera production recorded in 2010) was released on DVD in 2012.
Having always earned spectacular reviews on her career, Gheorghiu was honored with La Medaille Vermeille de la Ville de Paris and was appointed an Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres and Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture and by her native country Romania. In December 2010 she was awarded the honorific title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Arts in Iasi (Romania) and the Star of Romania, the highest decoration given by the by the President of Romania. In 2012 she received the Nihil Sine Deo royal decoration from HRH King Michael I of Romania.
