"
Hold The Line" was a song written by
David Paich and recorded by
American rock group
Toto. The song was the band's first single, and was featured on their debut eponymous
album. The single reached #5 in the
U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart during the winter of 1978--79, and spent a total of six weeks in the Top 10. "Toto", released in 1978, was the first studio album by the group, and also included the hit
singles "
I'll Supply The Love" and "
Georgy Porgy". Although not initially very well received by critics, the band quickly gained a following, and the album gained a reputation for its characteristic sound, mixing soft pop with both synth and hard rock elements. At the time of its release, the lineup of Toto was:
Bobby Kimball (lead and backing vocals);
Steve Lukather (guitars, lead and backing vocals); David Paich (keyboards, lead and backing vocals);
Steve Porcaro (keyboards, lead vocals);
David Hungate (bass); and
Jeff Porcaro (drums, percussion). The members of Toto were regulars on albums by
Steely Dan,
Seals & Crofts,
Boz Scaggs,
Sonny & Cher, and many others, contributing to many of the most popular records of the
1970s. Keyboardist David Paich, son of musician and session player/arranger
Marty Paich, rose to fame after having co-written much of Scaggs's "
Silk Degrees" album.
Having played on many sessions with drummer Jeff Porcaro (the son of noted session percussionist
Joe Porcaro), whom he met while attending
Grant High School in
Van Nuys, California, Paich began to discuss seriously with
Porcaro the possibility of their forming their own band. They brought in bassist and fellow session veteran David Hungate, having played with him in the backing band for Boz Scaggs. In addition, the duo asked guitarist Steve Lukather (who also played in Scaggs's band as a replacement for
Les Dudek) and Jeff Porcaro's brother
Steve (keyboards) to join the team. With the addition of former
S.S. Fools singer Bobby Kimball, the group began to work on their first album in
1977 after signing with
Columbia Records.
Once the band came together, David Paich began composing what would become their eponymous debut album, "Toto". According to popular myth, in order to distinguish their own demo tapes from ones recorded by other bands in the studio, Jeff Porcaro wrote the word 'Toto' on them.
Band members told the press that the band was named after the dog in "
The Wizard Of Oz". Several changes to the band's lineup have been made over the years, including many different lead singers. Jeff Porcaro died in an accident caused by a heart attack related to his cocaine use on August 5,
1992, at the age of 38. In 2008,
Lukather announced his departure from the band, and the remaining band members later went their separate ways
. In the summer of
2010, Toto reformed and went on a short
European tour with a new lineup, to benefit
Mike Porcaro, bassist for the band from
1982 until
2007, who had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (
ALS, also known as
Lou Gehrig's disease) and is no longer an active member of the band.
The band has released a total of 17 albums, and have sold over 35 million albums to date. The group was honored with several
Grammy Awards over the years and was inducted into the Musicians
Hall Of Fame in 2009. On the
5th of November 2013, it has been confirmed both on Toto's and David Paich's official
Facebook pages that a new studio album is in the works. This channel is dedicated to the classic rock hits that have become part of the history of our culture. The incredible
