Finger Ring Avulsion Injury Treatment & Results
Finger injury (ring avulsion) sustained by
TV host Jimmy Fallon has been much talked about.
Ring injuries range from finger swelling to amputation with skin, nerve, artery, vein, tendon, bone, and joint damage.
The ring should be removed from a swollen finger to prevent further injury.
Treatment of the avulsion wound and fracture is more complex. Replantation surgery (microsurgery) of an amputated finger may require flaps and grafts.
PIP joint function is the key factor in the prognosis.
Early motion exercises are crucial for good results. A tight wedding ring is a frequent problem, which worsens in cases of bruise, fracture, insect bite, etc.
Finger ring avulsion injury occurs less frequently, when a ring on one’s finger is caught by a hook-like object. The extent of the injury is determined by the amount of energy transferred to the finger. Jimmy Fallon’s injury raises awareness of risks of wearing a ring during physical activities. There is lack of completely illustrated cases of treatment of ring avulsion injury. In this video Dr V. Macionis presents his experience in the management of ring avulsion injury.
