NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (Vee Jay 527) Out of Los Angeles, the second of only two singles issued by then 29 year old, Aki Aleong on the Vee Jay Label.
Born Aki Leonard Gonzales Aleong in Trinidad in 1934, he moved to Brooklyn, New York with his mother in 1949. Eventually he was cast in the role of 'Goat Boy' in the Broadway production, 'Teahouse of the August Moon' in which he gave 700 performances.
In 1956 Aki began appearing in various television programs which led to various motion picture roles, one of which was entitled, 'Never So Few' starring Frank Sinatra. After witnessing Aleong singing with the other Asian cast members between filming scenes, Sinatra who was quite impressed, arranged for him to cut a demo record. Aki, who had never been a singer or songwriter, composed the tune, 'Trade Winds, Trade Winds' and with $1,000.00, made the demo. After hearing the demo, Sinatra wasted no time in signing Aki Aleong to his label, Reprise Records, and with a nice budget recorded the tune. The disc climbed the charts in Los Angeles and in other markets which led to television and public appearances to promote the record. In 1963, Aleong signed with Vee Jay Records issuing 2 singles and an LP.
At a session at Hollywood's Gold Star Studios in May 1963, the tune, 'Giving Up On Love' was recorded utilizing an ensemble of L.A.'s 'Wrecking Crew' and backing vocals by The Blossoms (Fanita James, Darlene Love & Gracia Nitzsche). With a somewhat sparse, yet soulful backing track, this amazing record failed to chart. Label mate, Jerry Butler who was based in Chicago, took a liking to Aki's version of the song so much so that he recorded 'Giving Up On Love' with a nearly note for note arrangement in the spring of 1964 himself and manged to get a hit record peaking at #56 on the Billboard Top 100. Jerry Butler may have had the hit, but the passing of time has now made original copies of Aki's single a highly coveted and collectible item among Northern Soul music aficionados.
While still working in television and motion pictures, Aki Aleong went on to be a successful record company executive as the west coast R&B; sales and promotion manager for Capitol Records; an assistant vice president of promotion for Polydor Records; an assistant vice president of sales for Liberty/United Artist Records; as well as the president of Pan World Records and Pan World Publishing.

Assing "Aki" Aleong (born December 19, 1934) is an American character actor and singer who has also been active in songwriting and musical production. He is probably best known for portraying Senator Hidoshi during the first season of the critically acclaimed series Babylon 5, as well as portraying Mr. Chiang, the aide to Nathan Bates in the weekly series of V: The Series. He also portrayed the character of Colonel Mitamura in Farewell to the King He owned the Gingham Dog fast food restaurant in Hollywood, California circa 1965.
He has a listing in the current "Joel Whitburn's Top Pop Singles 1955-2008" with "Trade Winds, Trade Winds" appearing in November 1961. The song peaked at #101 in Billboard Magazine on the "Bubbling Under the Hot 100" charts and it remained on the chart for four weeks. According to an interview with Aki on YouTube ("Part 1 of Twyman Creative Insider Interview with Aki Aleong") the song was Number 1 in Los Angeles in 1961.
He also is a member of the Media Action Network for Asian Americans (MANAA) and is the executive director for Asians in Media.

Several of Sinatra's friends and associates joined him on the new label, and our compilation picks the highlights of Reprise's first full two years of operation.
