For today's video I'm using some products from Sephora and Sephora Collection to complete one of my 'Go To' makeup looks- fresh skin with bright eyes and a bold lip. I’m excited to show you some of the Sephora Collection products because I feel like nobody really talks about the brand much on YouTube. One of the first dark lip colours I owned was from Sephora Collection and this light wearing cream Lip Stain brings back all the feels.
Once you master the technique and find what works best for you, this is a look that can be completed in under 15 minutes in the morning when you're on the go! I hope you enjoy the video, please don't forget to like/comment! I really appreciate it :)

Numeral (linguistics)
In linguistics, a numeral is a member of a word class (or sometimes even a part of speech) designating numbers, such as the English word 'two' and the compound 'seventy-seven'.
Identifying numerals
Numerals may be attributive, as in two dogs, or pronominal, as in I saw two (of them).
Many words of different parts of speech indicate number or quantity. Quantifiers do not enumerate, or designate a specific number, but give another, often less specific, indication of amount. Examples are words such as every, most, least, some, etc. There are also number words which enumerate but are not a distinct part of speech, such as 'dozen', which is a noun, 'first', which is an adjective, or 'twice', which is an adverb. Numerals enumerate, but in addition have distinct grammatical behavior: when a numeral modifies a noun, it may replace the article: the/some dogs played in the park → twelve dogs played in the park. (Note that *dozen dogs played in the park is not grammatical, so 'dozen' is not a numeral.)

For today's video I'm using some products from Sephora and Sephora Collection to complete one of my 'Go To' makeup looks- fresh skin with bright eyes and a bold lip. I’m excited to show you some of the Sephora Collection products because I feel like nobody really talks about the brand much on YouTube. One of the first dark lip colours I owned was from Sephora Collection and this light wearing cream Lip Stain brings back all the feels.
Once you master the technique and find what works best for you, this is a look that can be completed in under 15 minutes in the morning when you're on the go! I hope you enjoy the video, please don't forget to like/comment! I really appreciate it :)

Abstract:
In this talk I provide an overview of current issues in the semantics and pragmatics of modified numerals. Starting point is the observation that numeral modifiers are: (i) plentiful and (ii) never constitute specialised vocabulary, but that they are instead borrowed from a myriad of other grammatical domains. For instance, English has (among many others) superlative ("at least 100"), comparative ("more than 100") and prepositional ("up to 100") modified numerals.
Until recently, standard semantic accounts of quantification assumed that modified numerals express relatively simple concepts, namely simply the standard arithmetic comparison relations between two
numbers (x is strictly greater than y, x is strictly smaller than y, x is greater or equal than y, etc.).
Over the past decade, however, semanticists have grown to realise that that picture greatly
oversimplifies matters. The main issue is that modified numerals fall into two distinct classes with respect to a number of semantic and pragmatic properties, not just in English, but in many other languages too. An illustration of these classes in English is the contrast between "fewer than 10" and "at most 9", which were previously thought to be synonymous. They are clearly not in (1) and (2): whereas (1) seems to be true and acceptable, most people will have trouble accepting (2) as true.
(1) A triangle has fewer than 10 sides.
(2) A triangle has at most 9 sides.
I will argue that the particular vocabulary used in numeral modifiers is directly relevant to their semantics and pragmatics. In particular, I will zoom in on prepositional modified numerals and ask the question whether there is any sense in which an expression like "over 100" or "up to 100" can be said to have aspects of the spatial semantics of the prepositions involved.

In this talk we show that both `at least n/at most n’ and `more than n/fewer than n’ can show uncertainty inferences under the right contextual conditions. Given this observation, we conclude that uncertainty inferences for modified numerals should not be encoded in the lexical semantics of the modifiers. Rather, we suggest that they are to be derived by general and independently motivated pragmatic processes.
Our central claim is that a simple degree-based semantics for both superlative and comparative numeral modifiers can be maintained, once we adopt a precise and independently motivated mechanism for deriving alternatives. We show that from this both obligatory uncertainty implicatures, and the unavailability of scalar implicatures in unembedded contexts follow straightforwardly, given a well-defined division of labor between semantics and pragmatics. The observed differences between superlative and comparative modifiers is argued to stem from independent conditions on alternative pruning and focus structure. Furthermore, we show that the account extends to embedded occurrences of superlative modifiers, where the choice between scalar vs. uncertainty implicatures we observe in other scalar expressions re-appears in most cases. To account for all the data, we adopt both an obligatory exhaustification mechanism and a decompositional analysis of downward-monotonic modified numerals.

The study of second-language (L2) phonological development has been influenced by three axioms regarding the relationship between the native language (L1) and the L2 in incipient bilingualism: (1) automatic perceptual linkage of the L1 and L2 at an allophonic level, (2) negative interference of the L1 in the L2, and (3) a direct relationship between L2 proficiency and L2 influence on the L1. In this talk, I will report findings from three strands of my research that contradict all of these axioms and, thus, necessitate modifications to the theory of bilingual phonology. First, L1 Shanghainese speakers manifest variation in the amount of L2 influence from Mandarin on their production of the same Shanghainese vowel, and this variation is correlated with cross-linguistic phonological similarity at the lexical, rather than allophonic, level. Second, L1 English novice learners of Korean experience prompt effects of L2 learning on their L1 production, which are actually larger than the L2 effects seen in experienced learners; moreover, these effects occur not only at a segmental level, but also at subsegmental and systemic levels. Third, L1 Korean learners of English (both native and heritage Korean speakers) show effects of their L1 experience that result in better-than-native perception of certain English consonants. Taken together, these findings argue in favour of a more nuanced view of bilingual phonological organisation, wherein cross-linguistic links occur at multiple levels and have consequences dependent on specific patterns of L1-L2 alignment that are not necessarily negative

Forum Lecture by Maria Polinsky, at the Charles M. Harper Center on July 31, 2015 at the Linguistic Summer Institute at the University of Chicago.
Experimental work is now pervasive in linguistics, as a glance at any recent LSA Meeting Program will demonstrate. In my own research, I try to combine theory with basic experimental work; the present talk will draw on my experiences in this area to discuss and evaluate those contexts in which experimental work can, in my opinion, be truly useful, versus those contexts where I believe such work it does not move the field forward. In thinking about experiments, it is important to draw a line between confirmatory studies, which help us choose one theory over another, and exploratory studies, which are needed to establish a general idea of the empirical landscape — before a solid theory is built. Formal experiments are well suited to the needs of confirmatory studies, which test competing theories, but it is less clear whether such experiments are fit for exploratory work. In the context of confirmatory studies, successful experimental work should be driven by theoretical questions. Worthwhile experiments build on theoretical knowledge and feed back into existing linguistic theories, forcing us to revisit familiar concepts and develop new theoretical principles. This unsurprising conclusion also suggests an important corollary: that we may get the best overall results by working in teams. A successful team needs a theoretical linguist, an empirical expert who controls the subtleties of the language under investigation, and a good experimental linguist. Building on this premise, this talk concludes by considering a number of readily available opportunities for team building, including dissertation committees, community involvement, cross-disciplinary projects, and international collaborations.
