The belief in learning styles is so widespread and prominent to the point it is considered to be common sense. Few people ever think to challenge this belief, which has been deeply ingrained in our educational system. Teachers are routinely told that, in order to be effective educators, they must identify and cater to individual students' learning styles, and it is estimate that around 90% of students believe that they have a specific learning style but, research suggests that learning styles don't actually exist! This presentation focuses on debunking this myth via research findings, explaining how/why the belief in learning styles is problematic, and examining the reasons why the belief persists despite the lack of evidence.
Dr. Tesia Marshik is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Her research interests in educational psychology include student motivation, self-regulation, and teacher-student relationships.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Engineering professor Barbara Oakley is co-teaching one of the world's largest online classes, "Learning How to Learn", https://www.coursera.org/course/learning.
She know firsthand how it feels to struggle with math. Dr. Oakley flunked her way through high school math and science courses, before enlisting in the U.S. Army immediately after graduation. When she saw how her lack of mathematical and technical savvy severely limited her options—both to rise in the military and to explore other careers—she returned to school with a new found determination to re-tool her brain to master the very subjects that had given her so much trouble throughout her entire life.
Barbara Oakley, PhD, PE is a professor of engineering at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. Her research focuses on the complex relationship between neuroscience and social behavior, and has been described as “revolutionary” by the Wall Street Journal. Oakley’s books have been praised by many leading researchers and writers, including Harvard’s Steven Pinker and E. O. Wilson, and National Book Award winner Joyce Carol Oates. Her book A Mind for Numbers: How to Excel in Math and Science (Even If You Flunked Algebra), will be published by Tarcher-Penguin on July 31, 2014.
Prior to her academic career, Oakley rose from private to captain in the U.S. Army, during which time she was recognized as a Distinguished Military Scholar. She met her husband, Philip, when she was working at the South Pole Station in Antarctica. Her experiences with well-intentioned altruism were shaped by her work as a Russian translator on Soviet trawlers on the Bering Sea during the early 1980s. Oakley was designated as an NSF New Century Scholar—she is also a recipient of the Oakland University Teaching Excellence Award (2013) and the National Science Foundation’s Frontiers in Engineering New Faculty Fellow Award. Oakley is an elected Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.

About the Book:
Whether you are a student struggling to fulfill a math or science requirement, or you are embarking on a career change that requires a higher level of math competency, A Mind for Numbers offers the tools you need to get a better grasp of that intimidating but inescapable field. Engineering professor Barbara Oakley knows firsthand how it feels to struggle with math. She flunked her way through high school math and science courses, before enlisting in the army immediately after graduation. When she saw how her lack of mathematical and technical savvy severely limited her options—both to rise in the military and to explore other careers—she returned to school with a newfound determination to re-tool her brain to master the very subjects that had given her so much trouble throughout her entire life.
In A Mind for Numbers, Dr. Oakley lets us in on the secrets to effectively learning math and science—secrets that even dedicated and successful students wish they’d known earlier. Contrary to popular belief, math requires creative, as well as analytical, thinking. Most people think that there’s only one way to do a problem, when in actuality, there are often a number of different solutions—you just need the creativity to see them. For example, there are more than three hundred different known proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem. In short, studying a problem in a laser-focused way until you reach a solution is not an effective way to learn math. Rather, it involves taking the time to step away from a problem and allow the more relaxed and creative part of the brain to take over. A Mind for Numbers shows us that we all have what it takes to excel in math, and learning it is not as painful as some might think!

For foreigners, learning to speak Chinese is a hard task. But learning to read the beautiful, often complex characters of the Chinese written language may be less difficult. Jacob Barnett is an American mathematician and child prodigy. At 8 years old, Jacob began sneaking into the back of college lectures at IUPUI. After being diagnosed with autism since the age of two and placed in his school's special ed. program, Jacob's teachers and doctors were astonished to learn he was able to teach calculus to college students.
At age nine, while playing with shapes, Jacob built a series of mathematical models that expanded Einstein's field of relativity. A professor at Princeton reviewed his work and confirmed that it was groundbreaking and could someday result in a Nobel Prize. At age 10, Jacob was formally accepted to the University as a full-time college student and went straight into a paid research position in the field of condensed matter physics. For his original work in this field, Jacob set a record, becoming the world's youngest astrophysics researcher. His paper was subsequently accepted for publication by Physical Review A, a scientific journal shared on sites such as NASA, the Smithsonian, and Harvard's webpage. Jacob's work aims to help improve the way light travels in technology.
Jacob is also CEO and founder of Wheel LLC, a business he started in his mom's garage, and is in the process of writing a book to help end "math phobia" in his generation.
Jacob's favorite pastime is playing basketball with the kids at his charity, Jacob's Place. It is a place where kids with autism are inspired every day to be their true authentic selves...just like Jacob.

What happens when we teach a computer how to learn? Technologist Jeremy Howard shares some surprising new developments in the fast-moving field of deep learning, a technique that can give computers the ability to learn Chinese, or to recognize objects in photos, or to help think through a medical diagnosis. (One deep learning tool, after watching hours of YouTube, taught itself the concept of “cats.”) Get caught up on a field that will change the way the computers around you behave … sooner than you probably think.

Abstract: In present discourse, the term “machine learning” is often used interchangeably with “artificial intelligence”. Artificial intelligence has, as a central pursuit, reasoning about action. Organized under this goal are many problems including long-term planning, decision making, and knowledge representation. Though AI and ML are far from the same thing, they share a strong, mutually suppo

Language and Learning: The Challenges of Primary Education in India
Reading is one of the fundamental building blocks of learning. Without learning to read and to understand it is hard to make meaningful progress in the education system (and perhaps in life as well). Using twenty years of experience of working with children in communities and schools and ten years of evidence from the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), the talk focuses on challenges of learning to read in India. Given the diverse language backgrounds that Indian children bring to school, the talk poses questions about how the
foundations of teaching language in Indian schools need to be revisited, reimagined and reworked.
Rukmini Banerjee says, ‘I work with the Pratham Education Foundation, a non- government organisation focused on children’s education and youth skilling in India. I enjoy working with children, telling them stories and writing children’s books.’

Abstract: In present discourse, the term “machine learning” is often used interchangeably with “artificial intelligence”. Artificial intelligence has, as a central pursuit, reasoning about action. Organized under this goal are many problems including long-term planning, decision making, and knowledge representation. Though AI and ML are far from the same thing, they share a strong, mutually supporting bond. In this talk I will discuss a few examples of this mutual support. First, I will talk about how domain knowledge revealed via learning techniques makes knowledge representation possible in the face of uncertainty, and often makes AI algorithms tractable. This often takes the form of learning domain information to guide search techniques. Secondly, we will discuss how in many cases, guided action must occur in order to collect data about an environment. In these cases, the first step of data collection involves creating an intelligent agent to act and sample from an environment. Lastly, I will talk about why you, the data scientists, should care about AI, and how it can be helpful in your research and application.
Bio: Don M. Dini has been practicing, teaching, and writing about data science for over ten years. He studied computer science and artificial intelligence at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and University of Southern California. While at USC he was a lecturer in computer science and worked on applying AI to various real world problems, such as understanding city populations through simulation, and systems to provide security against unknown attackers, which have since been used at LAX, the US coast guard, among other institutions. Today Don is a data scientist at AT&T; where he works on building intelligent systems, creating the next generation of communication networks, and creating models to understand human communication. In his free time, Don is an instructor of Kung Fu, and teaches classes in Palo Alto, CA. He competes in tournaments in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Math.
Why is a negative attitude towards mathematics common in our culture? Is it because math is indeed both difficult and demanding of the learner? Are lazy teachers, bad students, or the government to blame? Should educators emphasize on pedagogy and technology to make the learning simpler? Why is it important for students to work through basic math problems when we live in an era where one can turn to calculators or computer programs to do the mindless symbolic manipulations needed to get an answer? Is math even relevant anymore?
In the US most students will fail to achieve the mathematical skills necessary to pursue math centric technical careers. According to STEM education statistics, in 2013 only 36 percent of high school students were even “ready” for college level math. And the statistics further indicate that students of color and females score much lower across the board.
There certainly are problems when it comes to math education. In tonight's episode, we will explore reasons math education is failing and what can be done about it with an incredible panel.

Curiosity-driven learning and development: How robots can help us understand humans
A great mystery is how human infants develop: how they discover their bodies, how they learn to interact with objects and social peers, and accumulate new skills all over their lives. Such development is organized and progressive, and results from the complex growth processes and interaction between brain mechanisms, the physical and the social environment.
Constructing robots, and building mechanisms that model such developmental processes, is key to advance our understanding of human development, in constant dialogue with human and living sciences.
I will illustrate this point by presenting robotics models of curiosity-driven learning and exploration, and show how developmental trajectories can self-organize, starting from discovery of the body, then object affordances, then vocal babbling and vocal interactions with others. In such a vision, a limited set of meta-cognitive structures allow a learner to order its own learning experiences, creating its own curriculum where skills, including the manipulation of external objects, get naturally sequenced towards increasing complexity. In particular, I will show that the onset of language spontaneously forms out of such sensorimotor development.
Dr Pierre-Yves Oudeyer
Researcher Director at Inria
Dr. Pierre-Yves Oudeyer is Research Director at Inria and head of the Inria and Ensta-ParisTech FLOWERS team (France). Before, he has been a permanent researcher in Sony Computer Science Laboratory for 8 years (1999-2007). He studied theoretical computer science at Ecole Normale Supérieure in Lyon, and received his Ph.D. degree in artificial intelligence from the University Paris VI, France. After working on computational models of language evolution, he is now working on developmental and social robotics, focusing on sensorimotor development, language acquisition and life-long learning in robots. Strongly inspired by infant development, the mechanisms he studies include artificial curiosity, intrinsic motivation, the role of morphology in learning motor control, human-robot interfaces, joint attention and joint intentional understanding, and imitation learning. He has published a book, more than 80 papers in international journals and conferences, holds 8 patents, gave several invited keynote lectures in international conferences, and received several prizes for his work in developmental robotics and on the origins of language. In particular, he is laureate of the ERC Starting Grant EXPLORERS. He is editor of the IEEE CIS Newsletter on Autonomous Mental Development, and associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Autonomous Mental Development, Frontiers in Neurorobotics, and of the International Journal of Social Robotics. He is also working actively for the diffusion of science towards the general public, through the writing of popular science articles and participation to radio and TV programs as well as science exhibitions. The Learning Experience - Educators at Korea International School talk about the learning experience
This video was directed, filmed and edited by myself, Richard Poth of AtTechEdu and created as a project for my Masters in Educational Technology with Boise State University.
Korea International School encourage applied learning throughout the school and use the Project Based Learning model as part of this applied approach. I wanted to create a mini documentary that would ask questions about 'The Learning Experience' as this ties in with my Keynote presentation of the same name.
All the media created for my mini documentary have been recorded by myself. I used a two camera system (a Canon 6D EOS and an iPad Air 2) to record the interviews. I also used a camera lighting system to get the best light on the subject. I used the Voice Memos App on an iPhone 6 connected to an external microphone to record the sound and will then sync up the this sound file with the camera footage.
Before starting the interviews it was important to talk to the subjects so they would feel relaxed. This would enable me to get their best answers. I explained that I was not going to speak during their answers and they should repeat the question at the start of their answer. I wanted to avoid my voice being in the final video. I also asked them to speak directly to me and not look at the camera.
After recording the interviews, I then watched them through and planned the best cutaway footage to use. If I didn’t have the footage already I would record it using an iPhone 6.
I would like to thank the following people for their contribution in making this video.
The interviewees:
Dr. David Lovelin
Patrick Rich
Megan Godek
Eric Nelson
Gary Johnston &
Traci Osterhagen
I would also like to thank Korea International School for providing me with the locations and some of the equipment needed to record the media.
Finally, I'd like to thank my family Atiyeh Poth, Atrin and Ellah for supporting me during this project and putting up with my late nights in doing the editing!
This has been a fantastic project and I'm pleased with the outcome. All the responses advocate what I believe is The Learning Experience. Gary's first comment probably sums it all up, "the learning experience is one that you’ll remember years after it happened".

wn.com/The Learning Experience Educators At Korea International School Talk About The Learning Experience

Get Fluent With 1 Trick - Become A Confident English Speaker With This Simple Practice Trick

Start speaking fluent English confidently - http://www.englishanyone.com/speak-fluent-english-confidently-in-6-months-ea9/
Did you know that there’s just 1 simple trick to becoming a fluent English speaker?
Just 1 thing you must change about the way you learn to…
Have your words came out naturally and automatically – without hesitation – as if English were your first language, every time you speak…
Express your exact thoughts spontaneously, continuously and in detail, without being forced to change what you want to say – or only speak in simple sentences – because you can’t find the right words…
Understand everything you hear in English movies, TV shows, music and conversations, and finally speak confidently – without ever feeling nervous or worried about mistakes – with the smooth pronunciation of a native speaker…
And best of all, this 1 easy change in the way you learn will help you experience immediate improvement in your spoken English so you’ll finally be certain that you’re learning the right way.
But before I reveal this trick, I’d like you to know why so many English learners have problems with their English and struggle to become fluent Speakers…
Why do so many English learners often use words that sound unnatural in conversations?
What’s the reason they often have to think about what grammar rules to use before speaking?
What stops them from speaking smoothly and clearly?
The answer to all of these questions is, in 3 words…
How They Learn
You see, traditional language learning methods only give English learners part of the fluency puzzle…
Lessons teach them grammar rules, but not how to use grammar without thinking when they speak.
Students learn English through their own language, so they’re trained to hesitate and translate in their heads during conversations.
They learn to read and write the formal English of textbooks, but get very little training listening to – and speaking – casual, conversational, spoken English.
So, what is the 1 simple trick to becoming a successful English speaker?
It’s to learn English like native speakers.
Fluency is nothing more than a collection of habits, like using grammar without thinking, or pronouncing words correctly. So, all you need to do to develop the same habits native speakers have is to learn the same way native speakers learn…
When you learn English like native speakers, you master grammar automatically – without grammar tables and boring drills – through visual examples and stories.
Building fluency like a native speaker means you also learn slang, idioms, phrasal verbs and other conversational, spoken English expressions, in addition to what’s appropriate for writing.
Learning English the native way means you learn to speak fluent English naturally, actually practicing with native English speakers and building speaking confidence in the real world.
When you learn this way, it’s easy, fun, fast and doesn’t feel like studying at all, just like how you learned your own native language…
Now that you know that you must change the way you learn if you want to get fluent – because the traditional methods you’ve been using until now have not helped you become a confident speaker – how can you start developing the habits of a native English speaker so you can start speaking fluent English confidently?
With EnglishAnyone.com's English Fluency Training Video Course: Master English Conversation 2.0.
Master English Conversation 2.0 was designed by learners for learners with everything you need to finally…
Master even complicated grammar points without confusing grammar tables or boring drills so you can use grammar without hesitation when you speak…

Improve your pronunciation and sound like a native speaker…
Develop the habit of speaking and responding spontaneously in real situations…
Overcome shyness, meet native English speakers online and in the real world to practice speaking with, and build speaking confidence…
