I don't just mean today and yesterday, but also last week, month and for the last couple of years. Beautiful smiles and helpful people throughout the hospital. That said, make sure your ride is legal in the parking lot...else it will be by the time you get it back.

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is a government-run military veteran benefit system with Cabinet-level status. It is the United States government’s second largest department, after the United States Department of Defense. With a total 2009 budget of about $87.6 billion, VA employs nearly 280,000 people at hundreds of Veterans Affairs medical facilities, clinics, and benefits offices and is responsible for administering programs of veterans’ benefits for veterans, their families, and survivors.
It is administered by the United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
The Plymouth colony first cared for veterans beginning in 1636. The Plymouth Colony was, along with Jamestown, Virginia, one of the earliest successful colonies to be founded by the English in North America and the first sizable permanent English settlement in the New England region. Aided by Squanto, a Native American of the Patuxet people, the colony was able to establish a treaty with Chief Massasoit which helped to ensure the colony's success. It played a central role in King Philip's War, one of the earliest of the Indian Wars. Ultimately, the colony was merged with the Massachusetts Bay Colony and other territories in 1691 to form the Province of Massachusetts Bay.

The Undersecretary is the highest official directly responsible for the largest agency within the department, the Veterans Health Administration, commonly called the 'VA'. The position has been frequently held by a licensed physician.
Before 1992, the Under Secretary of Veterans Affairs for Health was known as the Chief Medical Director of Veterans Health.
Dr. Robert Petzel was sworn in on February 18th, 2010, and resigned, on 16 May 2014, amid criticism of long appointment waits, treatment delays, and falsification of records.

The VHA is distinct from the U.S. Department of Defense Military Health System of which it is not a part.
The VHA division has more employees than all other elements of the VA combined.
The first Federal agency to provide medical care to veterans was the Naval Home in Philadelphia, PA. The home was created in 1812 and was followed by the creation of Soldiers Home in 1853 and St. Elizabeth's Hospital in 1855. Congress created the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in 1865 in response to the high number of Civil War casualties. These homes were initially intended to be room and board for disabled veterans. However, by the late 1920s, the homes were providing a level of care comparable to hospital care.
President Hoover created the Veterans Administration (VA) in 1930 to consolidate all veteran services. General Omar N. Bradley was appointed to VA administrator and Bradley appointed Major General Paul Hawley as director of VA medicine, both in 1945. Hawley successfully established a policy that affiliated new VA hospitals with medical schools. Hawley also promoted resident and teaching fellowships at VA hospitals. Ultimately, Hawley was responsible for starting the hospital-based research program at the VA. Bradley resigned in 1947. However, upon resignation, 97 hospitals were in operation and 29 new hospitals had been built. As a result, the VA health system was able to serve a much larger population of veterans than it had served in previous years.
President Reagan Elevated the VA to cabinet status in 1988, which became known as the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Department of Veterans Affairs oversees the Veterans Health Administration.[4]
In the mid-1980s the VHA was criticized for their high operative mortality. To that end, Congress passed Public Law 99-166 in December 1985 which mandated the VHA to report their outcomes in comparison to national averages and the information must be risk-adjusted to account for the severity of illness of the VHA surgical patient population. In 1991 the National VA Surgical Risk Study (NVASRS) began in 44 Veterans Administration Medical Centers. By 31 December 1993 there was information for 500,000 non-cardiac surgical procedures. In 1994 NVASRS was expanded to all 128 VHA hospitals that performed surgery. The name was then changed to the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program.[5]
Beginning in the mid-1990s VHA underwent what the agency characterizes as a major transformation aimed at improving the quality and efficiency of care it provides to its patients. That transformation included eliminating underutilized inpatient beds and facilities, expanding outpatient clinics, and restructuring eligibility rules. A major focus of the transformation was the tracking of a number of performance indicators—including quality-of-care measures—and holding senior managers accountable for improvements in those measures.[6]

HUGE THANKS to the members of the American Legion "Doughboy Memorial" Post 138 for providing the many gifts for our Veteran residents to shop through. Money is raised by the American Legion throughout the year with events such as their coffee stops, rummage sales, cash donations and even making remembrance poppys. The residents were full of joy, thanks largely in part, due to their military escorts (from 4th Battalion, 23d Infantry Tomahawks 2-2 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, Joint Base Lewis-McChord) that were present to help push them, as well as assisting them to shop. Gary played a combat role with the US military and got a medical discharge and now he's in the Philippines.
The beauty of the situation for guys like Gary is that the US military takes real good care of you once you get here. I'll let Gary explain a bit more.
"Yeah, the VA here in the Philippines is pretty good... Full access to all the facilities in the States for the most part. Prescriptions. Get your education. All those facilities are available to you here."
"They're located in Manila on Roxas Boulevard. It's real easy to find."
Now, you're living in Cebu so how's that work with the VA being in Manila?
"With the VA in manila, they'll pay for my flight to send me from Cebu to Manila, put me up in the hotel room overnight. I go to the appointment, take care of business and they'll fly me back to Cebu. "
So basically, they're giving you money to live in the Philippines and they send you the checks, put the money in the bank..?
"Yeah, that's exactly right. I have all my payments sent to my local Filipino bank.
"So they're giving you money to live, they're giving you free meds, they're flying you in and out of Manila to get taken care of..."

Since inception of the Post-9/11 GI Bill program, VA has provided over $28 billion in tuition and benefits to over 950,000 Servicemembers, Veterans, their families, and to the colleges, universities, and trade schools they attend.
The Post-9/11 GI Bill provides financial support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service after September 10, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days.
Approved training under the Post-9/11 GI Bill includes graduate and undergraduate degrees, vocational/technical training, on-the-job training, flight training, correspondence training, licensing and national testing programs, entrepreneurship training, and tutorial assistance.

HUGE THANKS to the members of the American Legion "Doughboy Memorial" Post 138 for providing the many gifts for our Veteran residents to shop through. Money is raised by the American Legion throughout the year with events such as their coffee stops, rummage sales, cash donations and even making remembrance poppys.
The residents were full of joy, thanks largely in part, due to their military escorts (from 4th Battalion, 23d Infantry Tomahawks 2-2 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, Joint Base Lewis-McChord) that were present to help push them, as well as assisting them to shop.

My father was a Korean War vet. He served on a tin can-minesweeper in the navy. The last 3 months of his life he spent in a VA Hospital. My brothers and I and our family’s kept vigil. I was sleeping next to his bed the morning he passed. After we grieved, the nurses prepared his body for transport. They covered it with the flag. As we talked down the hall, they blew a horn and announced over the PA system that another warrior had fallen. We escorted my father’s body to the elevator to be taken to the funeral home.
A few days later at the cemetery, after the rifle volleys, after taps, the service man handed the folded flag to my brother—he’s a lieutenant coronel in the Army National Guard—and said, “On behalf of a grateful nation . . . .”
On behalf of a grateful nation, veterans are entitled to certain benefits, which includes medical care. Medicare works very well to fill in the gaps and enhance VA medical care.

VA Health benefits begin with the US Department of Veterans Affairs. You need to find out what benefits you qualify for. Qualification depends upon a number of factors: time and length of service, service related injuries, type of injuries, full or partial medical disability, etc. Your local Veterans Affairs office will help you. We have a superb office in Omaha. http://www.nebraska.va.gov/ 800-451-5796 They will take you through the process to determine your level of coverage.
The next step is to truly understand the limitations of your VA Health Benefits. This is best done BEFORE you need them. Some questions to ask are: am I 100% covered, will I be reimbursed for coverage in non-VA facilities, do I have co-pays, etc. You may find that you are on your own for emergency care, especially if the local VA is not set up for critical illness, e.g., heart attacks, stokes, car accidents, etc.
Many veterans I speak with are comfortable with the care they receive at the VA in Omaha and Lincoln; there are many veterans in the Omaha Metro area and Lincoln. Others will travel hours from rural areas to receive care here. If you are comfortable with VA care, that is great.
Medicare can also give you other options and fill in gaps in your VA care. You may not wish to make the trip to the VA hospital from your home. You may have a family doctor that you would prefer to use. You may like the convenience of getting into the doctor’s office quickly. There may be a certain specialist you want who is not at the VA. Medicare will afford you those options as well as many others. The biggest issue I believe is that you will be covered for emergency care if you have Medicare Part A & B. Your local VA hospital may not be equipped to handle a heart attack, stroke, or car accident. The ambulance will take you to the emergency room at the hospital closest to you that is rated for your particular critical illness. The Omaha VA is not a trauma center. And the bill for the emergency room and hospital stay may be yours to pay if you don’t have Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan in place.
My recommendation is always to find out the facts. You need to confirm the extent of your VA benefits. Get it in writing. Don’t be surprised by the gaps in your coverage. Do not miss out on the coverage that you are likewise entitled to with Medicare. Medicare is excellent medical coverage. It can be your primary coverage, a supplement to your VA benefits, or a back up to your VA medical benefits. Medicare may enhance your medical coverage at little or no cost.

Facts: David Henderson filed a claim for monthly compensation with the Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Office based on his need for in-home care. The Regional Office denied the claim. Mr. Henderson appealed to the Board of Veterans' Appeals, which affirmed the Regional Office. The path to VA reform starts with procurement
In April of 2013, the Government Accountability Office published a report on some of the largest medical facility construction projects at the Department of Veterans Affairs. The list of cities included Denver, Las Vegas, New Orleans, and Orlando. The GAO found that compared to initial estimates, cost increases at those projects ranged from 66 to 427 percent, and delays ranged between 14 and 86 months. Today, the VA is trying to forge a new path. Gregory Giddens, executive director at the Department of Veterans Affairs' Office of Acquisition, Logistics and Construction, discussed planned improvements to the procurement process with Government Matters. -

Mr. Henderson appealed to the Board of Veterans' Appeals, which affirmed the Regional Office. He then filed a notice of appeal with the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims fifteen days after the expiration of the 120-day appeal period set forth in 38 U.S.C. § 7266(a). The court of appeals denied the claim. The court of appeals held that it lacked jurisdiction because Mr. Henderson's notice of appeal was out of time and was not subject to equitable tolling.

Apparently, those applications were incomplete, but the VA did not tell the vets to correct the applications and resubmit them; so the applications were left pending on a shelf with no action by the VA and no health care for the veterans.
Reports state that nearly 300,000 veterans died waiting for a resolution from the VA. Of course, the VA blamed the veterans. This is a farce.
The veterans never even received a follow-up call to finish their supposedly incomplete applications. These mistakes are that of the VA, not the veterans.
The VA should be ashamed. Government bungling stood in the way of these warriors receiving health care and broke a promise the Nation gave to them. The VA’s dysfunctional bureaucrats need to be removed, and veterans should be allowed to have a voucher that gives them the privilege to go to their own doctors, doctors who are more concerned about health care than paperwork.
And that is just the way it is.
