The Thames Estuary is the estuary in which the River Thames meets the waters of the North Sea.
It is not easy to define the limits of the estuary. Although physically the head of Sea Reach or the Kent/Essex Strait, south of Canvey Island on the northern (Essex) shore presents a western boundary, the Tideway itself can be considered estuarine; it starts in south-west London at Teddington/Ham. The eastern boundary of the estuary suggested in a Hydrological Survey of 1882-9 is a line drawn from North Foreland, Margate, Kent via the Kentish Knock lighthouse to Harwich in Essex. It is to this line that the typical estuarine sandbanks extend. The estuary downstream of the Tideway has a tidal movement of 4 metres, moving at a speed of 8 miles per hour.
The estuary is one of the largest of 170 such inlets on the coast of Great Britain. It constitutes a major shipping route: its thousands of movements each year include large oil tankers, container ships, bulk carriers and roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) ferries entering the estuary for the Port of London and the Medway Ports of Sheerness, Chatham and Thamesport.

SEE MY TRAVEL WEBPAGES: http://www.motorhomefulltime.com/ https://www.facebook.com/motorhomefulltime So close to the centre of London, yet I suspect most Londoners have never heard of the Maplin Sands. Until quite recently it was owned by the Ministry of Defence and is still administered by a company on behalf of the ministry. I drove my van through check points to get here - all were open and unmanned. As can be seen in this film, the Maplin Sands are mudflats on the northern bank of the Thames estuary, off Foulness Island, near Shoeburyness, Essex. Road access is via Shoeburyness, once having reached this spot, parking is not a problem, probably because next to no-one ever goes here. I do not know what the situation is on staying overnight, there are no signs forbidding it, but le...

An all-encompassing WEBEO centred at an Airport! This is the first WEBEO in which an entire airport is proposed. It is located in the Thames estuary around 26 miles east of Central London, or only 9 miles outside the M25 motorway. The existing London Heathrow Airport is at its capacity, and a new airport is vitally needed to keep London globally competitive. The airport is in Medway county just north of Gillingham and will have a terminal and four concourses, connected by an underground people mover. Some possible usages for such an airport are to keep Oneworld/British Airways at Heathrow and move other airlines to the new airport. Another option is to relocate all intercontinental flights to the new Thames Airport and keep regional flights at Heathrow. In addition, this WEBEO combines r...

The Thames is the second longest river (215 miles, 346 km) in the United Kingdom and the longest river entirely in England. It rises at Thames Head in Gloucestershire, and flows into the North Sea at the Thames Estuary. It has a special significance in flowing through London. While it is best known because its lower reaches flow through central London, the river flows alongside several other towns and cities, including Oxford, Reading, Henley-on-Thames, Windsor and Richmond. The river is tidal in London with a rise and fall of 7 metres (23 ft). The Thames is fed by over 20 tributaries. It contains over 80 islands, and having both seawater and freshwater stretches, it supports a variety of wildlife. An expert team of marine conservationists have been scouring the Greater Thames Estuary by land, sea and air this week, as the Zoological Society of London conducts its fourth annual seal survey. Combining aerial surveys of the Essex and Kent coastlines, as well as sandbanks in the outer Thames Estuary, with more traditional boat and land-based studies, ZSL’s conservation scientists will be counting latest numbers of these charismatic marine mammals, as well as looking out for any emerging health trends. Today's walk is between the stations at Pitsea and Leigh, comprising around 7.5 miles of this new 29 mile walk in South Essex, which starts in Tilbury and finishes in Leigh-on-Sea; it is purposely 'rail-friendly'. The scenery is mainly flat and low-lying, with many creeks, marshes and mudflats, but with a backdrop of industry thrown in. The walking is easy (even with a dodgy hip!) and on decent surfaces, for the most part, though there is always the risk of water underfoot in such a damp area. N.B. Some wind interference with commentary.
A composite painting based on one by Rowland Hilder, but in my style! This artist has inspired me for over 40 years since I first started painting. I introduced this demo. by saying it was Essex; it is not, it's KENT!!

On the mouth of the Thames, lie the remains of Queenborough Castle. With a royal name, and an equally regal history, this unprepossessing site hides some intriguing mysteries - buried, along with the building's remains, over centuries. Time Team travel to the Isle of Sheppey, in Kent, to investigate the remains of the last royal castle to be built in the medieval period, in an effort to unlock some of its long-held secrets. The castle construction was ordered by Edward III during a lull in the Hundred Years War, but opinion is divided as to whether this was a defensive castle, designed to protect the Thames estuary, or a royal bolthole for the king to escape the plague.
