Tales From Uncle Frenchie (
True Stories!!!)
Uncle Frenchie is my paternal grandmother's last surviving sibling (there were ten of them in all breaking down to 6 girls and 4 boys
...My grandmother is the youngest and he is the oldest by 2 years but they are the last as well as the youngest siblings of the bunch...)
This was taken 10/7/2013 on his
87th Life Affirmation Day at his place of business,
The Charleston Chronicle Newspaper Offices...This was my first time meeting him but it seemed like I knew him all my life...We share a lot of interesting things in common including a unique sense of humor, fondness for hats, our dislike for stupidity and white supremacy as well as a sincere love of food and women...He is after all a sailor...
Lol...
Although he is 87 he has the energy/stamina and drive of a man half his age!!! He drives himself around in his van, set his own hours because he is the boss, and he is very active in the community, serving on the board of directors for the famous
Jenkins Orphanage which produced some of the greatest jazz musicians of the
20th Century!!!
He is also a former
Golden Gloves boxer and was awarded the
Bronze Star during his stint in the
Navy while surviving the
Vietnam War as a navy journalist...
My Uncle Frenchie was good childhood friends with jazz icon
Charlie Parker, was trained in the art of photography by legendary photographer
Ansel Adams, drank beers with
Fidel Castro during the
Cuban Revolution, once interviewed Ava Gardner as well as the
Queen of Spain, accompanied
U.S. VP Hubert Humphrey and
Gen. Ben
Westmoreland on a tour of
Vietnam (he also gave them a scare when his camera light bulb pop causing everyone to duck because they thought they were being hit with enemy fire), was an invited guest to a spaghetti dinner with legendary gangster kingpin
Charles 'Lucky' Luciano in
Naples, Italy, partied in
Rome, Italy, with legendary
Black night club impresario Ada 'Bricktop' Smith, and was a guest of honor in the homes of
Vietnamese enemy combatants during the Vietnam War while patrolling the infamous
Mekong Delta among other adventures...
Safe to say that Uncle Frenchie did a lot of living in nearly a century of living to last several lifetimes!!!
For posterity I was blessed to interview him about his life for several
hours...Most times the facts and truth makes for a better story than fiction and hyperbole...In this segment I will share some of the incredible stories my Uncle Frenchie have so selflessly shared with me...What a humble man and what a well lived life...
The Best Is Yet To Come!!!
