Equalization (British: equalisation) is the process of adjusting the balance between frequency components within an electronic signal. The most well known use of equalization is in sound recording and reproduction but there are many other applications in electronics and telecommunications. The circuit or equipment used to achieve equalization is called an equalizer. These devices strengthen (boost) or weaken (cut) the energy of specific frequency bands.
In sound recording and reproduction, equalization is the process commonly used to alter the frequency response of an audio system using linear filters. Most hi-fi equipment uses relatively simple filters to make bass and treble adjustments. Graphic and parametric equalizers have much more flexibility in tailoring the frequency content of an audio signal. An equalizer is the circuit or equipment used to achieve equalization. Since equalizers, "adjust the amplitude of audio signals at particular frequencies," they are, "in other words, frequency-specific volume knobs."
In the video I'll discuss a few of the differences between parametric EQ's and graphic EQ's, when used in a guitar chain on a pedalboard. I'll also explain a bit of how and why to use each one. Note that this isn't an exhaustive academic version of how they work electronically, rather it's a "how to" for those interested in using them to shape guitar tone. Also, sorry about the lack of the guitar display at 7:45... I didn't notice until after it was too late. The "too long didn't watch" version is that they both can do the same thing, but the parametric eq allows for a wider range of frequencies as well as pinpointing frequencies a bit easier. However, the graphic can be a bit simpler to use.
This tutorial will teach you the fundamentals of EQ or Equalization using the Parametric EQ 2 in FL Studio 12, and how to EQ, carve or shape any instrument or sound to your liking. This knowledge can be transferred to just about any equalizer in any DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). 00:28 Introduction to Frequencies 00:42 What is the Frequency Spectrum? 01:21 Where Sounds or Instruments Live in the Frequency Spectrum 02:11 Example #1: Kick Drum 02:56 Example #2: Clap 03:18 Example #3: Hi-hat 03:42 Example #4: Bassline 03:56 Example #5: Pluck 04:16 What is EQ or Equalization? 04:31 Uses of EQ 04:54 Compression Tutorial 05:01 Fruity Parametric EQ 2 - 7 Band Equalizer 05:09 What are Bands? 05:16 Band Properties 05:21 Frequency 05:29 Amount 05:49 Shape/Type 06:42 (Breasts) 08:17 Bandwidth, Res...

Also sometimes referred to as Peak Notch filters, they are the most flexible of all. Parametric EQs' allow for adjustable center frequency, gain, and bandwidth (referred to as "Q"). They are great for targeting specific areas of the frequency spectrum.
This is #2 of 2. Watch these 2 videos and see how easy it is to use a parametric equalizer.
