Ulaanbaatar is the capital of Mongolia, a metropolis that is the pulsating heart of the country and combines the cultures of old with a lively feeling of stepping forward to new horizons. The spiritual centre of Mongolia once lay directly on the Peking -Irkutsk trading route, thus it became an important centre of trade. At that time the city was called ‘Urgöö’ and life was determined by the region’s monasteries and lamas. Subsequently, Chinese traders and workers, Russians - and even Europeans - settled in this area. Ganden Hyid is a pilgrimage destination for the faithful from all over Mongolia. They pray, and wind prayer mills and crowd into the main sanctuary. In the monastery’s main temple is a twenty six metre high statue, the Buddha Of Mercy, patron saint of Mongolia, that weighs twenty tons and is decorated with gold and gems. Almost fifty kilometres east of Ulaanbaatar is a leisure area for the inhabitants of the city, the Terej National Park, in which amid fine and protected nature, visitors can do what each Mongolian can do best - ride – across country and without limit! In Ulaanbaatar, the Nadaam Festival begins where virtuoso throat singers and horse headed fiddlers set the contestants in the right mood and a typical snake woman from Mongolia’s state circus school performs amazing acrobatic contortions. This has been an amazing visit to an exotic and little known world. And this capital city, with all of its incredible contrasts, seems almost unreal. But Ulaanbaatar is very much ‘here, now and heading for the future’!

However, a few mysterious sites remain which, along with the Erdene Zuu Monastery, are highly evocative of this ancient city in Central Mongolia as for thirty two years it was the centre of one of the most powerful empires on Earth. The Magic of Mongolia can be felt by all who come here and this journey across a harsh and contrasting land has been an unforgettable adventure beyond compare.

Opening:
After nearly a year of backpacking around Asia, we found ourselves rolling into Ulan Bator, the capital city of Mongolia, a country synonymous with Genghis Khan (known as Chinggis Khan in Mongolia) , wide open spaces, and Nomadic life. Of the 3 million people that call Mongolia home, nearly half live in UB, making it the cultural, financial and industrial center of Mongolia, so it’s no surprise that this city is the first stop for most foreign visitors. In our case, we entered the country from China after a 48 hour marathon of bus and train travel that started from Beijing, so as soon as we arrived, the ONLY thing we could think about was to getting to the nearest hostel to sleep. So we did. For 2 days.
Leaving UB:
Once we got our strength up we did some research and found that our hostel was offering a tour of the gobi desert as well as other parts of central Mongolia; a journey that would take 16 days; we’d decided to go with 6 other travelers that we’d met a couple of days beforehand, but with only one day to prepare and zero winter clothes, we desperately needed to gear up...
Market:
“Naran Tuul zach (зах or Khar Zakh)” is a sprawling flea market where you can find wall clocks, linoleum flooring and just about anything else. The market has gained a bad reputation among locals and foreigners alike for being a pickpocket’s haven, so with such a rough exterior and shady nickname like “black market”, we figured we’d be able to bargain our way into some amazing deal, but we soon discovered that this wasn’t the case...
Lunch:
Because Mongolian culture is based on livestock farming, the traditional diet consists of meat, flour and dairy with mutton being the meat of choice. Mongolian winters are extremely harsh so a lot of animal fat is consumed during winter and more dairy products during the summer.
Closing:
What… a… day. It was a long journey, but the scenery was stunning and the Mongolian countryside made quite the first impression on us. But this was only just the beginning and we couldn’t wait to see what the next 15 days would bring...

Ulan Ude is an exotic city with a population of a million and for the first time we get a feeling of being in Asia. However, the largest head of Lenin in the world emphasises the region’s association with Mother Russia. In 1666 a winter fortress was built on the Uda River by Russian Cossacks who were travelling east, the Verchneundinsk Fortress. Ulaan Baatar: the station is very quiet. Under the severe stare of the female train guards, passengers leave the train and the luggage is unloaded. The Trans Siberian Railroad is still the longest railway line in the world and connects the continents of Europe and Asia. It is truly a technical miracle and a legend that has survived the passage of time.

Mongolia is a big country with bad transportation means, so trying to see too many provinces you would spend your holidays inside vehicles. Hôvsgôl (or "Hövsgöl") lake, in Hövsgöl province, is very beautiful. There is not much architecture in Mongolia, but Amarbaysgalant monastery, Selenge province, in the middle of nowhere, is worth seeing. Interested by the economical aspect? High water can make the roads difficult.), Reindeer herders living in High Alpine mountains. Must ride horses or reindeer from Tsagaanuup. It can be a long hard ride.
Local Bonda Lake Camp in Khatgal village near Lake Khovsgol offers various nature and cultural featuring: fishing, hiking, winter tours, nomad visits, horse back riding, visiting reindeer herders and Darhad valley. Horse riding, you have chance discover Lake Khovsgol and its beautiful waters, meet Tsataan (nomadic reindeer herders) living in yurts in the north of Khovsgol area. This region is incredibly scenic, perched at 1645 m altitude in green mountains, covered with thick pine forests and lush meadows with grazing yaks and horses, and rich with wildlife: the lake has 9 species of fish and its surroundings are full of sheep, goats, elk and more than 430 species of birds. There are 5 different Mongolian tribes nearby: Khalh, Darhad, Buriad, Hotgoid, & Urianhai. The Camp has a hot shower, sauna, internet and a restaurant with Mongolian and European meals.

Mongolian cashmere is known as the best in the world. Garments and blankets made of cashmere. You can find lots of stores that sells cashmere products.
Mongolia is famous for its copper mines Erdenet and Oyu Tolgoi. Copper bookmark is one of the ideal souvenirs and you can easily find this USD1 metal souvenir in Ulaanbaatar souvenir shops.
Paintings by local artists are excellent buys in Mongolia(local painting center gps coordinate: 47.928958, 106.928024 , "N+106°55'40.9"E/@47.9289438,106.9280278,15).
You can find felt poker-work in Erdenet.
Note that it is illegal to take antiques out of the country without a special permit.
The huge open-air market, Narantuul ("The Black Market") in Ulaanbaatar offers the lowest prices on just about anything you could want. Be very careful of the many pickpockets and even attackers there. This can be a great place to get a good pair of riding boots. You can opt for a variety of Mongolian styles, from fancy to the more practical, or even get a good set of Russian style boots.
In Erdenet is a ISO 9 001 certified carpet factory, making and selling also slippers made in carpet.

Ulan Bator 
/ˌuːlɑːn ˈbɑːtər/ or Ulaanbaatar (Mongolian: Улаанбаатар, [ʊɮɑːŋ.bɑːtʰɑ̆r], ᠤᠯᠠᠭᠠᠨᠪᠠᠭᠠᠲᠤᠷ, Ulaγanbaγatur, literally "Red Hero") is the capital and by far the largest city of Mongolia. An independent municipality, the city is not part of any province, and its population as of 2008 is over one million.
Located in north central Mongolia, the city lies at an elevation of about 1,310 metres (4,300 ft) in a valley on the Tuul River. It is the cultural, industrial, and financial heart of the country. It is the center of Mongolia's road network, and is connected by rail to both the Trans-Siberian Railway in Russia and the Chinese railway system.
The city was founded in 1639 as a movable (nomadic) Buddhist monastic centre. In 1778 it settled permanently at its present location, the junction of the Tuul and Selbe rivers. Before that it changed location twenty-eight times, with each location being chosen ceremonially. In the twentieth century, Ulan Bator grew into a major manufacturing centre.

In our case, we entered the country from China after a 48 hour marathon of bus and train travel that started from Beijing, so as soon as we arrived, the ONLY thing we could think about was to getting to the nearest hostel to sleep. So we did. For 2 days. Leaving UB: Once we got our strength up we did some research and found that our hostel was offering a tour of the gobi desert as well as other parts of central Mongolia; a journey that would take 16 days; we’d decided to go with 6 other travelers that we’d met a couple of days beforehand, but with only one day to prepare and zero winter clothes, we desperately needed to gear up... Market: “Naran Tuul zach (зах or Khar Zakh)” is a sprawling flea market where you can find wall clocks, linoleum flooring and just about anything else. The market has gained a bad reputation among locals and foreigners alike for being a pickpocket’s haven, so with such a rough exterior and shady nickname like “black market”, we figured we’d be able to bargain our way into some amazing deal, but we soon discovered that this wasn’t the case... Lunch: Because Mongolian culture is based on livestock farming, the traditional diet consists of meat, flour and dairy with mutton being the meat of choice. Mongolian winters are extremely harsh so a lot of animal fat is consumed during winter and more dairy products during the summer. Closing: What… a… day. It was a long journey, but the scenery was stunning and the Mongolian countryside made quite the first impression on us. But this was only just the beginning and we couldn’t wait to see what the next 15 days would bring... Under the severe stare of the female train guards, passengers leave the train and the luggage is unloaded. The Trans Siberian Railroad is still the longest railway line in the world and connects the continents of Europe and Asia. It is truly a technical miracle and a legend that has survived the passage of time. -

Opening:
After nearly a year of backpacking around Asia, we found ourselves rolling into Ulan Bator, the capital city of Mongolia, a country synonymous with Genghis Khan (known as Chinggis Khan in Mongolia) , wide open spaces, and Nomadic life. Of the 3 million people that call Mongolia home, nearly half live in UB, making it the cultural, financial and industrial center of Mongolia, so it’s no surprise that this city is the first stop for most foreign visitors. In our case, we entered the country from China after a 48 hour marathon of bus and train travel that started from Beijing, so as soon as we arrived, the ONLY thing we could think about was to getting to the nearest hostel to sleep. So we did. For 2 days.
Leaving UB:
Once we got our strength up we did some research and found that our hostel was offering a tour of the gobi desert as well as other parts of central Mongolia; a journey that would take 16 days; we’d decided to go with 6 other travelers that we’d met a couple of days beforehand, but with only one day to prepare and zero winter clothes, we desperately needed to gear up...
Market:
“Naran Tuul zach (зах or Khar Zakh)” is a sprawling flea market where you can find wall clocks, linoleum flooring and just about anything else. The market has gained a bad reputation among locals and foreigners alike for being a pickpocket’s haven, so with such a rough exterior and shady nickname like “black market”, we figured we’d be able to bargain our way into some amazing deal, but we soon discovered that this wasn’t the case...
Lunch:
Because Mongolian culture is based on livestock farming, the traditional diet consists of meat, flour and dairy with mutton being the meat of choice. Mongolian winters are extremely harsh so a lot of animal fat is consumed during winter and more dairy products during the summer.
Closing:
What… a… day. It was a long journey, but the scenery was stunning and the Mongolian countryside made quite the first impression on us. But this was only just the beginning and we couldn’t wait to see what the next 15 days would bring...

Under the severe stare of the female train guards, passengers leave the train and the luggage is unloaded. The Trans Siberian Railroad is still the longest railway line in the world and connects the continents of Europe and Asia. It is truly a technical miracle and a legend that has survived the passage of time.

Horse riding, you have chance discover Lake Khovsgol and its beautiful waters, meet Tsataan (nomadic reindeer herders) living in yurts in the north of Khovsgol area. This region is incredibly scenic, perched at 1645 m altitude in green mountains, covered with thick pine forests and lush meadows with grazing yaks and horses, and rich with wildlife: the lake has 9 species of fish and its surroundings are full of sheep, goats, elk and more than 430 species of birds. There are 5 different Mongolian tribes nearby: Khalh, Darhad, Buriad, Hotgoid, & Urianhai. The Camp has a hot shower, sauna, internet and a restaurant with Mongolian and European meals.

Mongolian cashmere is known as the best in the world. Garments and blankets made of cashmere. You can find lots of stores that sells cashmere products.
Mongolia is famous for its copper mines Erdenet and Oyu Tolgoi. Copper bookmark is one of the ideal souvenirs and you can easily find this USD1 metal souvenir in Ulaanbaatar souvenir shops.
Paintings by local artists are excellent buys in Mongolia(local painting center gps coordinate: 47.928958, 106.928024 , "N+106°55'40.9"E/@47.9289438,106.9280278,15).
You can find felt poker-work in Erdenet.
Note that it is illegal to take antiques out of the country without a special permit.

Paintings by local artists are excellent buys in Mongolia(local painting center gps coordinate: 47.928958, 106.928024 , "N+106°55'40.9"E/@47.9289438,106.9280278,15).
You can find felt poker-work in Erdenet.
Note that it is illegal to take antiques out of the country without a special permit.
The huge open-air market, Narantuul ("The Black Market") in Ulaanbaatar offers the lowest prices on just about anything you could want. Be very careful of the many pickpockets and even attackers there. This can be a great place to get a good pair of riding boots. You can opt for a variety of Mongolian styles, from fancy to the more practical, or even get a good set of Russian style boots.

On Malabar Hill, between the villas of numerous film stars and luxury apartments, is the fascinating Adishwarji Jain Temple, a good place in which to gain an insight into the harsh rituals of the wealthy faithful who worshipped the first Jain saints. The legendary Hotel Taj Mahal Palace, with its striking façade and red cupolas, had a spectacular origin.
When industrial mogul, Tata, was refused entry to a British hotel restaurant by a sign that stated, FOR EUROPEANS ONLY, he decided to build the city's finest hotel.
Nowhere else are India's many remarkable contrasts so obvious and nowhere else can India be experienced so intensely as in Mumbai, mega metropolis and unique Gateway to India!
