Verbascum

Verbascum (/vɜːrˈbæskəm/), common name mullein (sg. /ˈmʌlᵻn/) (also known as velvet plant), is a genus of about 360 species of flowering plants in the figwort family Scrophulariaceae. They are native to Europe and Asia, with the highest species diversity in the Mediterranean.

Mullein or "mullein leaf" often refers to the leaves of Verbascum thapsus, the great or common mullein, which is frequently used in herbal medicine.

Description

They are biennial or perennial plants, rarely annuals or subshrubs, growing to 0.5 to 3 metres (1.6 to 9.8 ft) tall. The plants first form a dense rosette of leaves at ground level, subsequently sending up a tall flowering stem. Biennial plants form the rosette the first year and the stem the following season. The leaves are spirally arranged, often densely hairy, though glabrous (hairless) in some species. The flowers have five symmetrical petals; petal colours in different species include yellow (most common), orange, red-brown, purple, blue, or white. The fruit is a capsule containing numerous minute seeds.

Verbascum thapsus

Verbascum thapsus (great mullein or common mullein) is a species of mullein native to Europe, northern Africa, and Asia, and introduced in the Americas and Australia.

It is a hairy biennial plant that can grow to 2 meters tall or more. Its small yellow flowers are densely grouped on a tall stem, which grows from a large rosette of leaves. It grows in a wide variety of habitats, but prefers well-lit disturbed soils, where it can appear soon after the ground receives light, from long-lived seeds that persist in the soil seed bank. It is a common weedy plant that spreads by prolifically producing seeds, but it rarely becomes aggressively invasive, since its seeds require open ground to germinate. It is a very minor problem for most agricultural crops, since it is not a very competitive species, being intolerant of shade from other plants and unable to survive tilling. It also hosts many insects, some of which can be harmful to other plants. Although individuals are easy to remove by hand, populations are difficult to eliminate permanently.

The lower leaves have petioles while the upper leaves are sessile. The flowers are in spike-like racemes and are bright yellow. Distribution & Habitat: Mullein grows in waste areas, along railroad tracks, dry meadows, pastures, gravely banks and around settlements. Hey guys in this video we make a Mullein tea to clear up chest congestion and help with coughs. Mullein is a well known herb for it's expectorant qualities in herbalism as well as being a rather safe medicinal plant overall. Easy to identify and easy to use this is a plant you must know if you're interested in foraging. The whole plant can be used from the leaves and flowers to the root and seeds plus it has a host of other uses like being good at expelling worms. This tea can be made from mullein leaves, flowers, and/or the root and you can choose to use the plant fresh or dried. Another benefit to mullein tea is it's taste, which is slightly reminiscent of a green and black tea blend. While it is called a tea, you actually need to make a decoction instead of steeping the herb in hot water. To make a decoction of mullein simply boil 1 - 2 tablespoons of the chosen plant parts in 1 cup of water for 10 - 15 minutes, strain and sweeten if desired. Part 2 available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iqyw9XuasuA Years ago, I was reading about unusual walking sticks, and the website talked about a gentleman's cane made from mullein (Verbascum thapsus). When I mentioned this exotic plant to my family, they said, "oh yeah, we had one of those weeds grow in our yard!" Flash forward several years, and I found a patch of mullein to experiment with, and it's pretty amazing stuff! It grows to be seven feet around here, is very lightweight, is really easy to work with, and cleans up to be a beautiful and unique pseudo-wood. This video shows how to pick and prepare the mullein plant for drying. Part II will show my specific "woodworking" process to turn it into a cane or walking stick. I would have made these into one video, but I'm giving my family mullein walking sticks for Christmas (don't tell!) and wanted to show them at least part of the process when they open their packages.
