Contest of the cathedrals – the Romanesque period | DW Documentary
Why did Christians start building cathedrals reaching to the sky 1000 years ago? Was it to demonstrate earthly power, or an attempt to be close to God? Whatever the reason, the resulting architecture still fascinates us today.
The Romanesque period still harbors many unsolved mysteries. For example, what led people at the turn of the millennium to build churches that towered into the sky, triggering competition among cities over cathedral size and splendor? This cathedral obsession is illustrated by the examples in Mainz, Worms and Speyer.
In St. John's Church in Mainz, a sarcophagus is opened after being sealed for 1,000 years. It’s the resting place of Archbishop Erkanbald, who built Mainz Cathedral, the largest religious building in the West at the time. It was hoped the cathedral wou...

Battle of Nancy (1477) | Rise and Fall of the Burgundian State
In the late 15th century, the powerful Burgundian State, under the leadership of Charles the Bold, sought to expand its territory. Having previously having been a part of France, Burgundy now aimed to connect its far-flung territories with its core province. However, this move soon led to conflict with the Holy Roman Empire (aka Habsburg), Old Swiss Confederacy, Lower League, and Duchy of Lorraine. The so-called Burgundian Wars pitted the well-equipped, modern Burgundian army against a collection of Swiss mercenaries in a power struggle that would shape the course of European history. And, it all came to a dramatic end at the Battle of Nancy in 1477.
CORRECTION: At 1:57 it should say Charles VII.

Places to see in ( Mainz - Germany ) St Stephan's Church
The Collegiate Church of St. Stephan, known in German as St. Stephan zu Mainz, is a Gothic hall collegiate church located in the German city of Mainz. It is known for windows created by Marc Chagall. St. Stephan was originally built in 990 at the order of Archbishop Willigis, who also initiated the building of Mainz Cathedral. The church was founded on top of the highest hill in the town, most likely on behalf of Theophanu, the widow of Otto II, Holy Roman Emperor. Willigis intended the church to be a site of prayer for the Empire.

It was hoped the cathedral would turn Mainz into a second Rome, promoting its archbishop to pope’s deputy. A short time later, King Conrad constructed a cathedral in Speyer, a burial place for his Salian dynasty. Its scope would befit the fact that God had installed the Salians as an imperial dynasty and therefore as supreme rulers of the world. Inevitably, there were conflicts between rulers and men of the church. But in Worms, another group established itself in the 12th Century quest for power: the emerging bourgeoisie. A new era began, in which the rigid power structures of the Romanesque period, reflected in its massive buildings, slowly broke down. As they did so, they left space for a new architectural style that honored openness and light: the Gothic.

this video is a rather long one but it's definitely worth your time if you're interested in learning about our history, which is to say learning human history. this video is a bit different from the usual documentaries you would find on youtube about human history because this video stays on point with only pointing out all the major events that have happened throughout history and throughout the evolution of society and civilizations.. like the agricultural revolution, the building of the pyramids, the rise and fall of dozens of empires which eventually led to the modern world that we live in today! of course it's not all just sunshine and rainbows because there have been many conflicts and plagues which came but together we got through it all.. a good example would be how the black plague almost wiped out the entire human race but yet we managed to fight it and get even stronger.. this video also focuses on the entire globe instead of just one area and it's history.. you'll learn about the history of asia, history of europe, history of native america and everything that happened in the last 20000 years in africa as well.. you'll see how there have been many technological revolutions so to speak and inventions like the telegraph, the radio waves, etc which led to a better and easier life for all of us but of course we cannot tell the human story without mentioning the art because art has been a huge focus of humans throughout history.. we had great artists like leonardo da vinci, nikola tesla, thomas edison, etc which all contributed to and created what we normal humans could only imagine.. you'll also see great generals like napoleon bonaparte and julius.. cleopatra and great philosphers like socrates, etc.. there will be many other honorable mentions like joan of arc, niccolo machiavelli, Galileo di Vincenzo Bonaiuti de' Galilei.. so hold back, sit tight and grab your popcorn to enjoy and learn the most amount you have about our history in one hour ever! and don't forget to subscribe and like..

The current church building dates from the late medieval era; construction of the main area of the church began in about 1267 and was completed in 1340. The successional building kept the guidelines of the floor plan of the original Willigis building and with it the design as a double choir church. St. Stephan is the oldest Gothic hall church in the Upper Rhine district, and is (besides Mainz Cathedral) the most important church in the city of Mainz.
Only a few changes have been made to the church since the 14th century. The cloister, for instance, was added between 1462 and 1499 to the southern side of the church, and the outer face of the church was updated during the Baroque period. In 1857 a great explosion in a nearby powder magazine (Mainz was a federal fortress in the 19th century) destroyed the baroque facing of the church.
St. Stephan was heavily damaged in the cause of the bombing of Mainz in World War II. The cloister was heavily damaged and was rebuilt between 1968 and 1971; the restoration of the huge western belfry was also completed at that time, albeit with some difficulty. The arches over the nave and the choir could not be saved and have been replaced by a flat wooden ceiling. The church features a Gothic hall with a triple nave and quires at both the west and east ends. A large octagonal bell tower rises above the western choir.
The Chagall choir windows in St. Stephan are unique in Germany. Between 1978 and his death in 1985, Russian Jewish artist Marc Chagall created nine stained-glass windows of scriptural figures in luminous blue. The figures depict scenes from the Old Testament, demonstrating the commonalities across Christian and Jewish traditions. Chagall intended his work to be a contribution to Jewish-German reconciliation, made all the more poignant by the fact that Chagall himself fled France under Nazi occupation. He chose St. Stephan due to his friendship with Monsignor Klaus Mayer, who was then the presiding priest of St. Stephan. Chagall's work has been continued after his death by his pupil Charles Marq and by others.
Despite the immense damage caused by both World War II and the powder explosion to St. Stephan, the 13th-century altar mensa (or table) and the huge Tabernacle dating from about 1500 have both survived. Archbishop Willigis was buried in the church in 1011. His resting place is no longer known, but it is believed he is buried in the collegiate area.
