Nagaland is a state in India located in the very northeastern part of the country, just to the west of Myanmar. I was excited to visit a friend in Nagaland, and before I arrived, I had no idea how important pigs were in the Naga diet. Soon I was dining on delicious pork cooked with dry bamboo shoots, rice, dal, and lots of different chili paste sauces.
But then I had an opportunity to roast and eat fresh pig intestines with my friend's grandfather - and what a fantastic idea that was! He sliced down some fresh banana leaves to use as a plate. He then took the pig intestines and sliced them into pieces. In order to roast over fire, grandfather then took bamboo and make slivers used for skewers, sharpening them to a point. He skewered each of the intestines and then prepared them to be immersed into the flames. They aren't grilled, they are roasted in Nagaland.
The grease from the pig intestines even caught on fire, as grandpa quickly blew out the flames. The result was flame charred pig intestines. They were actually quite delicious, like naturally sausage that just oozed with porky grease and flavor. I actually overall preferred the small pig intestines which were a little less oily and were slightly crunchy!
Anyway, I had an incredible time visiting Nagaland, India, and roasting pig intestines the local Naga way, should be high on anyone's priority list for a great time!

Wild Frontiers' Jonny Bealby presents a guide to Calcutta and the Northeast of India.
As far as Wild Frontiers is concerned Calcutta and the Northeast is a region that comprises pretty much anything east of Delhi, running along the Ganges flood plain to Calcutta and beyond to the borders of Bangladesh, Burma and Bhutan.
If most travellers coming to India head west out of Delhi to Rajasthan, most that don't head east down the Ganges to Varanasi.
Most of these travel by air or rail directly to Varanasi but if you are of an adventurous disposition there are many interesting places to stop off at along the route, such as Rishikesh -- where the Beatles stayed and wrote the famous White Album -- or Lucknow, a beautiful city packed with fabulous Moghul architecture. In fact if you're looking for a group tour you might like to try our Slow Down the Ganges trip, which, having spent some time in the Himalayas and at Corbett Tiger Park, takes a boat from Allahabad, spending two days and nights, on this spiritual aqua highway.
Whatever your preferred form of transport is to Varanasi, even the most seasons travellers among you are in for a shock when you get there.
Varanasi sits at the confluence of the Ganges, the Yamuna and the mythical Sara Swati Rivers and as such is one of the most important pilgrimage centres in the whole country. Over 60,000 devotees a day come here to cleanse themselves in the rivers holy waters. Others come here to die believing death in Varanasi removes you from the cycle of rebirth and delivers you to heaven and the burning ghats, and the religious festivals that go on here, day and night, are an ever present accompaniment.
From Varanasi you can continue east to Calcutta -- personally my favourite city in India. Largely off the beaten track, Calcutta -- or Kolkata, as its now known locally -- is a quintessential Indian city; a place of bustling bazaars and markets, of epic historical monuments, amazing decaying architecture, great cuisine and above all a buzzing humanity.
And from here head north. First and foremost to the famous tea plantations of Darjeeling -- where you'll find an interesting town, some great accommodation, and wonderful views, particularly of the 8,000m epic mountain Kanchenjunga. And from here, you can continue east, perhaps on one of the famous river boats up the Brahmaputra River, to Nagaland and a very different India.

Welcome to Delhi. Say goodbye to your personal space. It’s crowded, it’s overwhelming, and definitely exhausting. One day here can feel like an entire week. The only way you’ll have any fun is to just put down the Purell and join the party.
Instead of going straight to Agra to see the Taj Mahal, first I head west to hang with some locals in Rajasthan. Here, the people are welcoming, the desert is sprawling, and the camels command the streets. And it turns out that the cows aren’t the only things Hindus hold sacred.
Karni Mata Rat Temple. Over 20,000 rats call this Hindu temple home, and Indians come here to pay their respects, as these rats are believed to be the reincarnations of ancestors. Shoes aren’t allowed inside, so plan ahead and bring two pairs of socks, and if you’re brave enough, it’s considered an honor to share a bowl of milk with the rats.
Most travelers who come to Jaisalmer opt for the camel safari across the Thar Desert, leading you to a good spot to view the sun setting over the Pakistani border, which happens to be heavily armed, so always keep your cool.
The food is awesome. It completely blew me away. I honestly don’t know much about Indian food, and half the time I didn’t know what I was ordering, but with the intense spices and pungent flavors, every meal seemed to be better than the next, from high end restaurants to local cafes. TripAdvisor and Lonely Planet usually hit the mark with their recommendations, and asking for whatever the chef recommends almost always rewarded me with a memorable meal.
Get on a bus and head north, and you’ll eventually reach Rishikesh- a city where you won’t find meat on any menu, and is overrun by hippie backpackers, weird yoga people, and unruly monkeys. It’s the gateway to the Himalayas.
Oh my God whatever you do.. don’t feed the monkeys. Rabies is a very serious risk in India, and medical treatment to prevent it is very long, and very painful.
After experiencing my share of incredible extremes here in India, my journey brings me to Varanasi, Hindu’s most holy city on the banks its most holy river, The Ganges. Varanasi is a city that was built on and still thrives on traditions. Traditions that may seem strange and shocking, at first, but spend enough time here and you’ll come to appreciate the power of this place.
For many people, Varanasi is their final resting place. Hindus believe that dying here will release you from the cycle of rebirth. For families that can afford it, elaborate cremation ceremonies are carried out in publi c view along the river, their ashes being released into the water. For the vast majority, however, bodies are weighted with stones and sunk to the bottom. These traditions are in harmony with daily bathing rituals- a ritual that is said to remove sins and purify souls.

I have heard story and visited 2010, an old place in present Jaisalmer, probably not so much known to tourists.It is one old monastery in which is living only one young monk-now 17 years old, but monastery was established 400 years before Jaisalmer was there, by one sadhu Naga-baba. My friend, sw. Shantam sagar , also tourist guide told me this story on actual place. Listen interesting stories about it.

Darjeeling, located at the base of the Himalayas, is a beautiful little town in the West Bengal state of India. After staying in Kolkata for a few weeks, and spending a little time in Nagaland, I headed to Darjeeling. The closest train station to Darjeeling is New Jalpaiguri, which is better known as NJP. From there you have to take a jeep to Darjeeling town which takes approximately 4 hours.
After arriving in Darjeeling, we were extremely hungry, and the first restaurant we could come across was Singalila Restaurant, located right in the center of Darjeeling, just below the Chow Rasta. As soon as I pulled back the curtain and took a whiff, I could tell it was going to be an incredible meal!
The restaurant is run by a motherly lady and her daughters that cook a delightful mixture of Sikkimese and Nepali and Himalayan food. They have Tibetan thukpa noodles and also they serves momo dumplings, but I was far more interested in eating rice and curry! So as we sat down, we simply order rice, which came with a variety of different vegetable curries and then I also ordered a beef curry and a pork curry. On another day, I had their chicken curry which was equally delicious, but you always have to just eat what they have available that particular day.
The weather was extremely cold, probably close to freezing, but as soon as the mother brought me a fresh hot plate of rice paired with all the different curries I felt a lot warmer and more comfortable. You'll be served first a plate of rice that comes with dal soup - sort of more Nepali style than Indian style, the vegetable dish of the day, possibly some curry potatoes or other starch. You can then add a meat curry to your meal if you'd like. The biggest bonus for me for eating eat Singalila restaurant in Darjeeling was the communal plate of raw red onions, chillies, and outrageously delicious green sauce. I honestly could barely believe how good the green sauce was, and I'm not totally sure what all the ingredients included. It was very spicy and garlicky and it went well with everything throughout the meal.
I loved this restaurant so much that I returned for lunch three days in a row - the food was that good! If you're ever in Darjeeling, India, be sure to visit Singalila Restaurant for a home cooked motherly style meal - the food is marvelous!

As part of the 'Khonoma Green Village Project' (KGVP) supported by the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture, eco-tourism is being promoted in Khonoma village. CEE is one of the agencies involved in conducting environmental impact assessment (EIA) to avoid any environmental damage that may happen because of tourism. Guidelines, codes of conduct and environmental indicators are being worked out before the tourist flow starts.
Khonoma, an Angami Naga village in Nagaland, situated 21 km west of Kohima is endowed with rich forest cover and rare biodiversity. CEE started working in Khonoma way back in 1994, soon after the launch of CEE North-East in 1993. As the interest of the people grew in CEE's programmes, the modest environmental awareness was scaled up and projects like BAIDIK (Biodiversity Awareness Integration through Documentation of Indigenous Knowledge), NEEPS (National Environment Education Programmes for Schools) and Darwin Initiative (Conserving India's Biodiversity through NGO training and Projects with Local communities) were taken up by CEE in Khonoma. The interventions helped strengthen capacities of the local community.
As a result of environmental awareness created Khonoma has reserved about 70 sq km of its village forest as 'Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary' (KNCTS). The formation of KNCTS is a remarkable achievement. The 'Village Council' of Khonoma (the apex governing body of the village) since 1998 has banned hunting not only in KNCTS but in the entire forest area of the village. KNCTS is a unique example of the community initiative for wildlife and environment conservation
Recently, the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture, through the Nagaland State Department of Tourism has provided support to initiate KGVP for the development of eco-tourism using the resources of KNCTS and the cultural heritage of Khonoma. This is first of its kind project in the country. Many other agencies have also extended support to this initiative.
A 2-day workshop on various aspects of the Khonoma EIA study was organized by 'Khonoma Tourism Development Board' (KTDB) at Khonoma where CEE and two other agencies were invited to share the EIA study. The rationale, objective, methodology followed and important highlights of the Khonoma EIA study were discussed in the workshop. Some basic indicators to be adopted for the monitoring and impact assessment process were explained.
Some of the recommendations of the study are: to have a strong monitoring system and reduce or minimize negative impacts of tourism; to continue the EIA study process from time to time; to encourage the entire village to give inputs into the EIA study data body, especially in terms of traditions and legends; documentation and development of the legends of Khonoma; documentation of history of Khonoma; identification and development of Unique Selling Propositions (USP) of Khonoma (these may be some birds and plant species, agriculture, monsoon, crop harvesting); designing packages for tourism in Khonoma with detailed itinerary; organizing village youth as tourist guides, imparting them necessary training, sending them out for more professional training and exposure; selling local products, i.e., handicraft and handloom; inviting members of the travel media to come, experience and write on Khonoma, to popularize it as a tourist destination etc.

Band from Darjeeling Adams Apple performed their orginal composed song 'Till the end' during the International Hornbill Rock Contest at Indira Gandhi Stadium in Kohima, Nagaland. Adams Apple band were the winner of Hornbill Rock Contest 2014.
As winter slowly penetrates the hilly state of Nagaland, in North East India, a festive mood seeps into the valleys.
There is a buzz in the air. This is the sound of Nagaland preparing for the Hornbill Festival held in the first week of December every year.
The Festival is named after a bird greatly admired by the Naga people for its alertness and grandeur. The bird, the hornbill is mentioned in much of the folklore of Nagaland.
The festival takes place at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, not too far from Kohima. The village is a microcosm of each of the Naga tribes. Tourists are welcomed warmly to the traditional huts of each tribe, where one can sit with the elderly people of the tribe and share stories. Each morung or tribal hut, houses that particular tribe's own cuisine with the ever-present rice beer being sold to visitors as well. Even though the elders do not speak English, the younger members of the tribe can act as translators. The Hornbill Festival offers a window to the great, age-old culture and traditions of Nagaland.
The Nagas, traditionally known for their kind and friendly manner open their lives every year in an attempt to showcase the best the region has to offer. Comprising of seventeen different tribes, all differentiated by their traditional attire, food and folk dances, demonstrate their rich culture and traditions at the Hornbill Festival.
The festival attracts a large number of tourists, and has become larger and more popular over the years.
Various types of meats, in all forms, whether roasted, dried or smoked are available in traditional Naga style. The ultimate in Naga cuisine is traditional rice-beer; this is a must for all visitors. The night bazaar is a big hit with families, friends and visitors alike -- where all kinds of Naga traditional crafts, food items, stationary and of course Naga King chilli pickle can be found. The bamboo pavilion is made entirely of bamboo and is the main souvenir shop. It completes the Naga package.
Another event, true to the region was the traditional stone pulling ceremony of the Angami tribe at Kigwema village. Many gathered, both young and old, dressed in traditional attire to take part in the ceremony which brought the highway to a standstill for the duration of the ceremony .The ceremony concluded with victory dances and a community feast.
Various competitions take place during the Hornbill Festival. They range from Naga wrestling, chilly eating competitions -- with the fiery King Chilli! The Pork eating competition, the traditional fire making competition, greased pole climbing and for the younger ones. The International Hornbill Rock Contest created a platform for many artists and musicians.
An initiative was taken to preserve this rich cultural heritage of the Nagas, to bring unity among the various tribes and to boast tourism in the region, and so the Hornbill Festival was born.

Nagaland /ˈnɑːɡəlænd/ is a state in the far north-eastern part of India. It borders the state of Assam to the west, Arunachal Pradesh and part of Assam to the north, Burma to the east and Manipur to the south. The state capital is Kohima, and the largest city is Dimapur. The state of Nagaland has an area of 16,579 km2 with a population of 1,980,602 (nineteen lakhs eighty thousand six hundred two) as per the 2011 census making it one of the smallest states of India. The state is mostly mountainous except those areas bordering Assam valley. Mount Saramati is the highest peak in Nagaland with a height of 3,840 metres and its range forms a natural barrier between Nagaland and Burma. It lies between the parallels of 98 degree and 96 degree East Longitude and 26.6 degree and 27.4 degree latitude North of the Equator.
Nagaland, the 16th state of the Indian Union, was established on December 1, 1963. It is divided into eleven districts: Kohima, Phek, Mokokchung, Wokha, Zunheboto, Tuensang, Mon, Dimapur, Kiphire, Longleng and Peren. It is a largely mountainous state. Agriculture is the most important economic activity in Nagaland. Principal crops include rice, corn, millets, pulses, tobacco, oilseeds, sugarcane, potatoes and fibres. Other economy boosters are forestry, cottage industries, insurance, real estate and tourism.

I was excited to visit a friend in Nagaland, and before I arrived, I had no idea how important pigs were in the Naga diet. Soon I was dining on delicious pork cooked with dry bamboo shoots, rice, dal, and lots of different chili paste sauces. But then I had an opportunity to roast and eat fresh pig intestines with my friend's grandfather - and what a fantastic idea that was! He sliced down some fresh banana leaves to use as a plate. He then took the pig intestines and sliced them into pieces. In order to roast over fire, grandfather then took bamboo and make slivers used for skewers, sharpening them to a point. He skewered each of the intestines and then prepared them to be immersed into the flames. They aren't grilled, they are roasted in Nagaland. The grease from the pig intestines even caught on fire, as grandpa quickly blew out the flames. The result was flame charred pig intestines. They were actually quite delicious, like naturally sausage that just oozed with porky grease and flavor. I actually overall preferred the small pig intestines which were a little less oily and were slightly crunchy! Anyway, I had an incredible time visiting Nagaland, India, and roasting pig intestines the local Naga way, should be high on anyone's priority list for a great time! In fact if you're looking for a group tour you might like to try our Slow Down the Ganges trip, which, having spent some time in the Himalayas and at Corbett Tiger Park, takes a boat from Allahabad, spending two days and nights, on this spiritual aqua highway. Whatever your preferred form of transport is to Varanasi, even the most seasons travellers among you are in for a shock when you get there. Varanasi sits at the confluence of the Ganges, the Yamuna and the mythical Sara Swati Rivers and as such is one of the most important pilgrimage centres in the whole country. Over 60,000 devotees a day come here to cleanse themselves in the rivers holy waters. Others come here to die believing death in Varanasi removes you from the cycle of rebirth and delivers you to heaven and the burning ghats, and the religious festivals that go on here, day and night, are an ever present accompaniment. From Varanasi you can continue east to Calcutta -- personally my favourite city in India. Largely off the beaten track, Calcutta -- or Kolkata, as its now known locally -- is a quintessential Indian city; a place of bustling bazaars and markets, of epic historical monuments, amazing decaying architecture, great cuisine and above all a buzzing humanity. And from here head north. First and foremost to the famous tea plantations of Darjeeling -- where you'll find an interesting town, some great accommodation, and wonderful views, particularly of the 8,000m epic mountain Kanchenjunga. And from here, you can continue east, perhaps on one of the famous river boats up the Brahmaputra River, to Nagaland and a very different India. We have a number of group tours to this region; the afore mentioned Slowly Down the Ganges. The only way you’ll have any fun is to just put down the Purell and join the party. Instead of going straight to Agra to see the Taj Mahal, first I head west to hang with some locals in Rajasthan. Here, the people are welcoming, the desert is sprawling, and the camels command the streets. And it turns out that the cows aren’t the only things Hindus hold sacred. Karni Mata Rat Temple. Over 20,000 rats call this Hindu temple home, and Indians come here to pay their respects, as these rats are believed to be the reincarnations of ancestors. Shoes aren’t allowed inside, so plan ahead and bring two pairs of socks, and if you’re brave enough, it’s considered an honor to share a bowl of milk with the rats. Most travelers who come to Jaisalmer opt for the camel safari across the Thar Desert, leading you to a good spot to view the sun setting over the Pakistani border, which happens to be heavily armed, so always keep your cool. The food is awesome. It completely blew me away. I honestly don’t know much about Indian food, and half the time I didn’t know what I was ordering, but with the intense spices and pungent flavors, every meal seemed to be better than the next, from high end restaurants to local cafes. TripAdvisor and Lonely Planet usually hit the mark with their recommendations, and asking for whatever the chef recommends almost always rewarded me with a memorable meal. Get on a bus and head north, and you’ll eventually reach Rishikesh- a city where you won’t find meat on any menu, and is overrun by hippie backpackers, weird yoga people, and unruly monkeys. It’s the gateway to the Himalayas. Oh my God whatever you do.. don’t feed the monkeys. Rabies is a very serious risk in India, and medical treatment to prevent it is very long, and very painful. After experiencing my share of incredible extremes here in India, my journey brings me to Varanasi, Hindu’s most holy city on the banks its most holy river, The Ganges. Varanasi is a city that was built on and still thrives on traditions. Traditions that may seem strange and shocking, at first, but spend enough time here and you’ll come to appreciate the power of this place. For many people, Varanasi is their final resting place. Hindus believe that dying here will release you from the cycle of rebirth. For families that can afford it, elaborate cremation ceremonies are carried out in publi c view along the river, their ashes being released into the water. For the vast majority, however, bodies are weighted with stones and sunk to the bottom. After staying in Kolkata for a few weeks, and spending a little time in Nagaland, I headed to Darjeeling. The closest train station to Darjeeling is New Jalpaiguri, which is better known as NJP. From there you have to take a jeep to Darjeeling town which takes approximately 4 hours. After arriving in Darjeeling, we were extremely hungry, and the first restaurant we could come across was Singalila Restaurant, located right in the center of Darjeeling, just below the Chow Rasta. As soon as I pulled back the curtain and took a whiff, I could tell it was going to be an incredible meal! The restaurant is run by a motherly lady and her daughters that cook a delightful mixture of Sikkimese and Nepali and Himalayan food. They have Tibetan thukpa noodles and also they serves momo dumplings, but I was far more interested in eating rice and curry! So as we sat down, we simply order rice, which came with a variety of different vegetable curries and then I also ordered a beef curry and a pork curry. On another day, I had their chicken curry which was equally delicious, but you always have to just eat what they have available that particular day. The weather was extremely cold, probably close to freezing, but as soon as the mother brought me a fresh hot plate of rice paired with all the different curries I felt a lot warmer and more comfortable. You'll be served first a plate of rice that comes with dal soup - sort of more Nepali style than Indian style, the vegetable dish of the day, possibly some curry potatoes or other starch. You can then add a meat curry to your meal if you'd like. The biggest bonus for me for eating eat Singalila restaurant in Darjeeling was the communal plate of raw red onions, chillies, and outrageously delicious green sauce. I honestly could barely believe how good the green sauce was, and I'm not totally sure what all the ingredients included. It was very spicy and garlicky and it went well with everything throughout the meal. I loved this restaurant so much that I returned for lunch three days in a row - the food was that good! As part of the 'Khonoma Green Village Project' (KGVP) supported by the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture, eco-tourism is being promoted in Khonoma village. CEE is one of the agencies involved in conducting environmental impact assessment (EIA) to avoid any environmental damage that may happen because of tourism. Guidelines, codes of conduct and environmental indicators are being worked out before the tourist flow starts. Khonoma, an Angami Naga village in Nagaland, situated 21 km west of Kohima is endowed with rich forest cover and rare biodiversity. CEE started working in Khonoma way back in 1994, soon after the launch of CEE North-East in 1993. As the interest of the people grew in CEE's programmes, the modest environmental awareness was scaled up and projects like BAIDIK (Biodiversity Awareness Integration through Documentation of Indigenous Knowledge), NEEPS (National Environment Education Programmes for Schools) and Darwin Initiative (Conserving India's Biodiversity through NGO training and Projects with Local communities) were taken up by CEE in Khonoma. The interventions helped strengthen capacities of the local community. As a result of environmental awareness created Khonoma has reserved about 70 sq km of its village forest as 'Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary' (KNCTS). The formation of KNCTS is a remarkable achievement. The 'Village Council' of Khonoma (the apex governing body of the village) since 1998 has banned hunting not only in KNCTS but in the entire forest area of the village. KNCTS is a unique example of the community initiative for wildlife and environment conservation Recently, the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture, through the Nagaland State Department of Tourism has provided support to initiate KGVP for the development of eco-tourism using the resources of KNCTS and the cultural heritage of Khonoma. This is first of its kind project in the country. Many other agencies have also extended support to this initiative. A 2-day workshop on various aspects of the Khonoma EIA study was organized by 'Khonoma Tourism Development Board' (KTDB) at Khonoma where CEE and two other agencies were invited to share the EIA study. The rationale, objective, methodology followed and important highlights of the Khonoma EIA study were discussed in the workshop. Some basic indicators to be adopted for the monitoring and impact assessment process were explained. Band from Darjeeling Adams Apple performed their orginal composed song 'Till the end' during the International Hornbill Rock Contest at Indira Gandhi Stadium in Kohima, Nagaland. Adams Apple band were the winner of Hornbill Rock Contest 2014. As winter slowly penetrates the hilly state of Nagaland, in North East India, a festive mood seeps into the valleys. There is a buzz in the air. This is the sound of Nagaland preparing for the Hornbill Festival held in the first week of December every year. The Festival is named after a bird greatly admired by the Naga people for its alertness and grandeur. The bird, the hornbill is mentioned in much of the folklore of Nagaland. The festival takes place at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, not too far from Kohima. The village is a microcosm of each of the Naga tribes. Tourists are welcomed warmly to the traditional huts of each tribe, where one can sit with the elderly people of the tribe and share stories. Each morung or tribal hut, houses that particular tribe's own cuisine with the ever-present rice beer being sold to visitors as well. Even though the elders do not speak English, the younger members of the tribe can act as translators. The Hornbill Festival offers a window to the great, age-old culture and traditions of Nagaland. The Nagas, traditionally known for their kind and friendly manner open their lives every year in an attempt to showcase the best the region has to offer. Comprising of seventeen different tribes, all differentiated by their traditional attire, food and folk dances, demonstrate their rich culture and traditions at the Hornbill Festival. The festival attracts a large number of tourists, and has become larger and more popular over the years. Various types of meats, in all forms, whether roasted, dried or smoked are available in traditional Naga style. The ultimate in Naga cuisine is traditional rice-beer; this is a must for all visitors. The night bazaar is a big hit with families, friends and visitors alike -- where all kinds of Naga traditional crafts, food items, stationary and of course Naga King chilli pickle can be found. The bamboo pavilion is made entirely of bamboo and is the main souvenir shop. It completes the Naga package. Another event, true to the region was the traditional stone pulling ceremony of the Angami tribe at Kigwema village. Many gathered, both young and old, dressed in traditional attire to take part in the ceremony which brought the highway to a standstill for the duration of the ceremony .The ceremony concluded with victory dances and a community feast. Various competitions take place during the Hornbill Festival. They range from Naga wrestling, chilly eating competitions -- with the fiery King Chilli! The Pork eating competition, the traditional fire making competition, greased pole climbing and for the younger ones. The International Hornbill Rock Contest created a platform for many artists and musicians. An initiative was taken to preserve this rich cultural heritage of the Nagas, to bring unity among the various tribes and to boast tourism in the region, and so the Hornbill Festival was born. The Taj Mahal is one of the most famous attractions in all of India, and we visited Agra with the specific intent of going to the famous site. More travel and food adventures http://migrationology.com/ I normally don't go to a destination specifically to see the main attraction, most of the time I'm rather content to just wander around and discover street food and explore instead of chasing the famous sites. But Agra, India, was a little different, and we visited with the main intent of going to see the famous Taj Mahal - one of the most recognized man made structures in the world. When we arrive to Agra, we checked into Hotel Taj Plaza, which wasn't the overly nicest hotel I've stayed at, but it was the right price and it was just a 5 minute walk from the Taj Mahal. After putting our bags down we headed to the ticket counter which is actually not located at the Taj Mahal, but about 1 kilometer down the street. There you purchase your ticket and then can take a free shuttle to the entrance of the Taj Mahal. One thing that got me a bit annoyed was that the security wouldn't allow me to bring in my microphone into the Taj Mahal, so unfortunately the sound quality of this video is not very good, sorry about that, and hope you can hear everything. Some say that the Taj Mahal (ताज महल) is overrated and that they were not overly impressed when they saw it in real life. But I'm here to tell you that it was quite amazing and despite all the crowds of people, the building was majestic. The Taj Mahal is a white marble mausoleum that was built during the Indian Mughal Islamic empire by Shah Jahan in memory of one of his wives. Since it was built for one of his beloved wives, that is the reason why the Taj Mahal (ताज महल) is often considered a symbol of love. Having seen so many photos in my life of the Taj Mahal, it was almost as if I had been there already when I got my first glimpse, but being there in person is much more breathtaking. Walking around the gardens offers numbers chances to see the structure from different angles and to admire the incredible craftsmanship and symmetric architecture. After walking around the gardens we then proceeded on to the main deck where you must put the shoe coverings over your shoes and can then walk on the white marble surface. You can go inside the mausoleum to see the tombs, but they didn't allow any photography inside, so no footage there. After spending a few hours at the Taj Mahal, I headed out the East Gate and stopped at a rather expensive restaurant known as Relax He Relax. Though the prices were pretty expensive, after visiting the luxurious Taj Mahal, I was ready for something upscale. The Muglai northern Indian food was quite excellent! They were actually quite delicious, like naturally sausage that just oozed with porky grease and flavor. I actually overall preferred the small pig intestines which were a little less oily and were slightly crunchy!
Anyway, I had an incredible time visiting Nagaland, India, and roasting pig intestines the local Naga way, should be high on anyone's priority list for a great time!

Wild Frontiers' Jonny Bealby presents a guide to Calcutta and the Northeast of India.
As far as Wild Frontiers is concerned Calcutta and the Northeast is a region that comprises pretty much anything east of Delhi, running along the Ganges flood plain to Calcutta and beyond to the borders of Bangladesh, Burma and Bhutan.
If most travellers coming to India head west out of Delhi to Rajasthan, most that don't head east down the Ganges to Varanasi.
Most of these travel by air or rail directly to Varanasi but if you are of an adventurous disposition there are many interesting places to stop off at along the route, such as Rishikesh -- where the Beatles stayed and wrote the famous White Album -- or Lucknow, a beautiful city packed with fabulous Moghul architecture. In fact if you're looking for a group tour you might like to try our Slow Down the Ganges trip, which, having spent some time in the Himalayas and at Corbett Tiger Park, takes a boat from Allahabad, spending two days and nights, on this spiritual aqua highway.
Whatever your preferred form of transport is to Varanasi, even the most seasons travellers among you are in for a shock when you get there.
Varanasi sits at the confluence of the Ganges, the Yamuna and the mythical Sara Swati Rivers and as such is one of the most important pilgrimage centres in the whole country. Over 60,000 devotees a day come here to cleanse themselves in the rivers holy waters. Others come here to die believing death in Varanasi removes you from the cycle of rebirth and delivers you to heaven and the burning ghats, and the religious festivals that go on here, day and night, are an ever present accompaniment.
From Varanasi you can continue east to Calcutta -- personally my favourite city in India. Largely off the beaten track, Calcutta -- or Kolkata, as its now known locally -- is a quintessential Indian city; a place of bustling bazaars and markets, of epic historical monuments, amazing decaying architecture, great cuisine and above all a buzzing humanity.
And from here head north. First and foremost to the famous tea plantations of Darjeeling -- where you'll find an interesting town, some great accommodation, and wonderful views, particularly of the 8,000m epic mountain Kanchenjunga. And from here, you can continue east, perhaps on one of the famous river boats up the Brahmaputra River, to Nagaland and a very different India.

Welcome to Delhi. Say goodbye to your personal space. It’s crowded, it’s overwhelming, and definitely exhausting. One day here can feel like an entire week. The only way you’ll have any fun is to just put down the Purell and join the party.
Instead of going straight to Agra to see the Taj Mahal, first I head west to hang with some locals in Rajasthan. Here, the people are welcoming, the desert is sprawling, and the camels command the streets. And it turns out that the cows aren’t the only things Hindus hold sacred.
Karni Mata Rat Temple. Over 20,000 rats call this Hindu temple home, and Indians come here to pay their respects, as these rats are believed to be the reincarnations of ancestors. Shoes aren’t allowed inside, so plan ahead and bring two pairs of socks, and if you’re brave enough, it’s considered an honor to share a bowl of milk with the rats.
Most travelers who come to Jaisalmer opt for the camel safari across the Thar Desert, leading you to a good spot to view the sun setting over the Pakistani border, which happens to be heavily armed, so always keep your cool.
The food is awesome. It completely blew me away. I honestly don’t know much about Indian food, and half the time I didn’t know what I was ordering, but with the intense spices and pungent flavors, every meal seemed to be better than the next, from high end restaurants to local cafes. TripAdvisor and Lonely Planet usually hit the mark with their recommendations, and asking for whatever the chef recommends almost always rewarded me with a memorable meal.
Get on a bus and head north, and you’ll eventually reach Rishikesh- a city where you won’t find meat on any menu, and is overrun by hippie backpackers, weird yoga people, and unruly monkeys. It’s the gateway to the Himalayas.
Oh my God whatever you do.. don’t feed the monkeys. Rabies is a very serious risk in India, and medical treatment to prevent it is very long, and very painful.
After experiencing my share of incredible extremes here in India, my journey brings me to Varanasi, Hindu’s most holy city on the banks its most holy river, The Ganges. Varanasi is a city that was built on and still thrives on traditions. Traditions that may seem strange and shocking, at first, but spend enough time here and you’ll come to appreciate the power of this place.
For many people, Varanasi is their final resting place. Hindus believe that dying here will release you from the cycle of rebirth. For families that can afford it, elaborate cremation ceremonies are carried out in publi c view along the river, their ashes being released into the water. For the vast majority, however, bodies are weighted with stones and sunk to the bottom. These traditions are in harmony with daily bathing rituals- a ritual that is said to remove sins and purify souls.

Darjeeling, located at the base of the Himalayas, is a beautiful little town in the West Bengal state of India. After staying in Kolkata for a few weeks, and spending a little time in Nagaland, I headed to Darjeeling. The closest train station to Darjeeling is New Jalpaiguri, which is better known as NJP. From there you have to take a jeep to Darjeeling town which takes approximately 4 hours.
After arriving in Darjeeling, we were extremely hungry, and the first restaurant we could come across was Singalila Restaurant, located right in the center of Darjeeling, just below the Chow Rasta. As soon as I pulled back the curtain and took a whiff, I could tell it was going to be an incredible meal!
The restaurant is run by a motherly lady and her daughters that cook a delightful mixture of Sikkimese and Nepali and Himalayan food. They have Tibetan thukpa noodles and also they serves momo dumplings, but I was far more interested in eating rice and curry! So as we sat down, we simply order rice, which came with a variety of different vegetable curries and then I also ordered a beef curry and a pork curry. On another day, I had their chicken curry which was equally delicious, but you always have to just eat what they have available that particular day.
The weather was extremely cold, probably close to freezing, but as soon as the mother brought me a fresh hot plate of rice paired with all the different curries I felt a lot warmer and more comfortable. You'll be served first a plate of rice that comes with dal soup - sort of more Nepali style than Indian style, the vegetable dish of the day, possibly some curry potatoes or other starch. You can then add a meat curry to your meal if you'd like. The biggest bonus for me for eating eat Singalila restaurant in Darjeeling was the communal plate of raw red onions, chillies, and outrageously delicious green sauce. I honestly could barely believe how good the green sauce was, and I'm not totally sure what all the ingredients included. It was very spicy and garlicky and it went well with everything throughout the meal.
I loved this restaurant so much that I returned for lunch three days in a row - the food was that good! If you're ever in Darjeeling, India, be sure to visit Singalila Restaurant for a home cooked motherly style meal - the food is marvelous!

As part of the 'Khonoma Green Village Project' (KGVP) supported by the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture, eco-tourism is being promoted in Khonoma village. CEE is one of the agencies involved in conducting environmental impact assessment (EIA) to avoid any environmental damage that may happen because of tourism. Guidelines, codes of conduct and environmental indicators are being worked out before the tourist flow starts.
Khonoma, an Angami Naga village in Nagaland, situated 21 km west of Kohima is endowed with rich forest cover and rare biodiversity. CEE started working in Khonoma way back in 1994, soon after the launch of CEE North-East in 1993. As the interest of the people grew in CEE's programmes, the modest environmental awareness was scaled up and projects like BAIDIK (Biodiversity Awareness Integration through Documentation of Indigenous Knowledge), NEEPS (National Environment Education Programmes for Schools) and Darwin Initiative (Conserving India's Biodiversity through NGO training and Projects with Local communities) were taken up by CEE in Khonoma. The interventions helped strengthen capacities of the local community.
As a result of environmental awareness created Khonoma has reserved about 70 sq km of its village forest as 'Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary' (KNCTS). The formation of KNCTS is a remarkable achievement. The 'Village Council' of Khonoma (the apex governing body of the village) since 1998 has banned hunting not only in KNCTS but in the entire forest area of the village. KNCTS is a unique example of the community initiative for wildlife and environment conservation
Recently, the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture, through the Nagaland State Department of Tourism has provided support to initiate KGVP for the development of eco-tourism using the resources of KNCTS and the cultural heritage of Khonoma. This is first of its kind project in the country. Many other agencies have also extended support to this initiative.
A 2-day workshop on various aspects of the Khonoma EIA study was organized by 'Khonoma Tourism Development Board' (KTDB) at Khonoma where CEE and two other agencies were invited to share the EIA study. The rationale, objective, methodology followed and important highlights of the Khonoma EIA study were discussed in the workshop. Some basic indicators to be adopted for the monitoring and impact assessment process were explained.

As part of the 'Khonoma Green Village Project' (KGVP) supported by the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture, eco-tourism is being promoted in Khonoma village. CEE is one of the agencies involved in conducting environmental impact assessment (EIA) to avoid any environmental damage that may happen because of tourism. Guidelines, codes of conduct and environmental indicators are being worked out before the tourist flow starts.
Khonoma, an Angami Naga village in Nagaland, situated 21 km west of Kohima is endowed with rich forest cover and rare biodiversity. CEE started working in Khonoma way back in 1994, soon after the launch of CEE North-East in 1993. As the interest of the people grew in CEE's programmes, the modest environmental awareness was scaled up and projects like BAIDIK (Biodiversity Awareness Integration through Documentation of Indigenous Knowledge), NEEPS (National Environment Education Programmes for Schools) and Darwin Initiative (Conserving India's Biodiversity through NGO training and Projects with Local communities) were taken up by CEE in Khonoma. The interventions helped strengthen capacities of the local community.
As a result of environmental awareness created Khonoma has reserved about 70 sq km of its village forest as 'Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary' (KNCTS). The formation of KNCTS is a remarkable achievement. The 'Village Council' of Khonoma (the apex governing body of the village) since 1998 has banned hunting not only in KNCTS but in the entire forest area of the village. KNCTS is a unique example of the community initiative for wildlife and environment conservation
Recently, the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture, through the Nagaland State Department of Tourism has provided support to initiate KGVP for the development of eco-tourism using the resources of KNCTS and the cultural heritage of Khonoma. This is first of its kind project in the country. Many other agencies have also extended support to this initiative.
A 2-day workshop on various aspects of the Khonoma EIA study was organized by 'Khonoma Tourism Development Board' (KTDB) at Khonoma where CEE and two other agencies were invited to share the EIA study. The rationale, objective, methodology followed and important highlights of the Khonoma EIA study were discussed in the workshop. Some basic indicators to be adopted for the monitoring and impact assessment process were explained.

Band from Darjeeling Adams Apple performed their orginal composed song 'Till the end' during the International Hornbill Rock Contest at Indira Gandhi Stadium in Kohima, Nagaland. Adams Apple band were the winner of Hornbill Rock Contest 2014.
As winter slowly penetrates the hilly state of Nagaland, in North East India, a festive mood seeps into the valleys.
There is a buzz in the air. This is the sound of Nagaland preparing for the Hornbill Festival held in the first week of December every year.
The Festival is named after a bird greatly admired by the Naga people for its alertness and grandeur. The bird, the hornbill is mentioned in much of the folklore of Nagaland.
The festival takes place at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama, not too far from Kohima. The village is a microcosm of each of the Naga tribes. Tourists are welcomed warmly to the traditional huts of each tribe, where one can sit with the elderly people of the tribe and share stories. Each morung or tribal hut, houses that particular tribe's own cuisine with the ever-present rice beer being sold to visitors as well. Even though the elders do not speak English, the younger members of the tribe can act as translators. The Hornbill Festival offers a window to the great, age-old culture and traditions of Nagaland.
The Nagas, traditionally known for their kind and friendly manner open their lives every year in an attempt to showcase the best the region has to offer. Comprising of seventeen different tribes, all differentiated by their traditional attire, food and folk dances, demonstrate their rich culture and traditions at the Hornbill Festival.
The festival attracts a large number of tourists, and has become larger and more popular over the years.
Various types of meats, in all forms, whether roasted, dried or smoked are available in traditional Naga style. The ultimate in Naga cuisine is traditional rice-beer; this is a must for all visitors. The night bazaar is a big hit with families, friends and visitors alike -- where all kinds of Naga traditional crafts, food items, stationary and of course Naga King chilli pickle can be found. The bamboo pavilion is made entirely of bamboo and is the main souvenir shop. It completes the Naga package.
Another event, true to the region was the traditional stone pulling ceremony of the Angami tribe at Kigwema village. Many gathered, both young and old, dressed in traditional attire to take part in the ceremony which brought the highway to a standstill for the duration of the ceremony .The ceremony concluded with victory dances and a community feast.
Various competitions take place during the Hornbill Festival. They range from Naga wrestling, chilly eating competitions -- with the fiery King Chilli! The Pork eating competition, the traditional fire making competition, greased pole climbing and for the younger ones. The International Hornbill Rock Contest created a platform for many artists and musicians.

I normally don't go to a destination specifically to see the main attraction, most of the time I'm rather content to just wander around and discover street food and explore instead of chasing the famous sites. But Agra, India, was a little different, and we visited with the main intent of going to see the famous Taj Mahal - one of the most recognized man made structures in the world.
When we arrive to Agra, we checked into Hotel Taj Plaza, which wasn't the overly nicest hotel I've stayed at, but it was the right price and it was just a 5 minute walk from the Taj Mahal. After putting our bags down we headed to the ticket counter which is actually not located at the Taj Mahal, but about 1 kilometer down the street. There you purchase your ticket and then can take a free shuttle to the entrance of the Taj Mahal.
One thing that got me a bit annoyed was that the security wouldn't allow me to bring in my microphone into the Taj Mahal, so unfortunately the sound quality of this video is not very good, sorry about that, and hope you can hear everything.
Some say that the Taj Mahal (ताज महल) is overrated and that they were not overly impressed when they saw it in real life. But I'm here to tell you that it was quite amazing and despite all the crowds of people, the building was majestic.
The Taj Mahal is a white marble mausoleum that was built during the Indian Mughal Islamic empire by Shah Jahan in memory of one of his wives. Since it was built for one of his beloved wives, that is the reason why the Taj Mahal (ताज महल) is often considered a symbol of love. Having seen so many photos in my life of the Taj Mahal, it was almost as if I had been there already when I got my first glimpse, but being there in person is much more breathtaking. Walking around the gardens offers numbers chances to see the structure from different angles and to admire the incredible craftsmanship and symmetric architecture. After walking around the gardens we then proceeded on to the main deck where you must put the shoe coverings over your shoes and can then walk on the white marble surface. You can go inside the mausoleum to see the tombs, but they didn't allow any photography inside, so no footage there.
After spending a few hours at the Taj Mahal, I headed out the East Gate and stopped at a rather expensive restaurant known as Relax He Relax. Though the prices were pretty expensive, after visiting the luxurious Taj Mahal, I was ready for something upscale. The Muglai northern Indian food was quite excellent!

Some say that the Taj Mahal (ताज महल) is overrated and that they were not overly impressed when they saw it in real life. But I'm here to tell you that it was quite amazing and despite all the crowds of people, the building was majestic.
The Taj Mahal is a white marble mausoleum that was built during the Indian Mughal Islamic empire by Shah Jahan in memory of one of his wives. Since it was built for one of his beloved wives, that is the reason why the Taj Mahal (ताज महल) is often considered a symbol of love. Having seen so many photos in my life of the Taj Mahal, it was almost as if I had been there already when I got my first glimpse, but being there in person is much more breathtaking. Walking around the gardens offers numbers chances to see the structure from different angles and to admire the incredible craftsmanship and symmetric architecture. After walking around the gardens we then proceeded on to the main deck where you must put the shoe coverings over your shoes and can then walk on the white marble surface. You can go inside the mausoleum to see the tombs, but they didn't allow any photography inside, so no footage there.
After spending a few hours at the Taj Mahal, I headed out the East Gate and stopped at a rather expensive restaurant known as Relax He Relax. Though the prices were pretty expensive, after visiting the luxurious Taj Mahal, I was ready for something upscale. The Muglai northern Indian food was quite excellent!

As part of the 'Khonoma Green Village Project' (KGVP) supported by the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture, eco-tourism is being promoted in Khonoma village. CEE (Centre for Economic Education) is one of the agencies involved in conducting environmental impact assessment (EIA) to avoid any environmental damage that may happen because of tourism. Guidelines, codes of conduct and environmental indicators are being worked out before the tourist flow starts.
Khonoma, an Angami Naga village in Nagaland, situated 21 km west of Kohima is endowed with rich forest cover and rare biodiversity. CEE started working in Khonoma way back in 1994, soon after the launch of CEE North-East in 1993. As the interest of the people grew in CEE's programmes, the modest environmental awareness was scaled up and projects like BAIDIK (Biodiversity Awareness Integration through Documentation of Indigenous Knowledge), NEEPS (National Environment Education Programmes for Schools) and Darwin Initiative (Conserving India's Biodiversity through NGO training and Projects with Local communities) were taken up by CEE in Khonoma. The interventions helped strengthen capacities of the local community.
As a result of environmental awareness created Khonoma has reserved about 70 sq km of its village forest as 'Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary' (KNCTS). The formation of KNCTS is a remarkable achievement. The 'Village Council' of Khonoma (the apex governing body of the village) since 1998 has banned hunting not only in KNCTS but in the entire forest area of the village. KNCTS is a unique example of the community initiative for wildlife and environment conservation
Recently, the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture, through the Nagaland State Department of Tourism has provided support to initiate KGVP for the development of eco-tourism using the resources of KNCTS and the cultural heritage of Khonoma. This is first of its kind project in the country. Many other agencies have also extended support to this initiative.
A 2-day workshop on various aspects of the Khonoma EIA study was organized by 'Khonoma Tourism Development Board' (KTDB) at Khonoma where CEE and two other agencies were invited to share the EIA study. The rationale, objective, methodology followed and important highlights of the Khonoma EIA study were discussed in the workshop. Some basic indicators to be adopted for the monitoring and impact assessment process were explained.
Some of the recommendations of the study are: to have a strong monitoring system and reduce or minimize negative impacts of tourism; to continue the EIA study process from time to time; to encourage the entire village to give inputs into the EIA study data body, especially in terms of traditions and legends; documentation and development of the legends of Khonoma; documentation of history of Khonoma; identification and development of Unique Selling Propositions (USP) of Khonoma (these may be some birds and plant species, agriculture, monsoon, crop harvesting); designing packages for tourism in Khonoma with detailed itinerary; organizing village youth as tourist guides, imparting them necessary training, sending them out for more professional training and exposure; selling local products, i.e., handicraft and handloom; inviting members of the travel media to come, experience and write on Khonoma, to popularize it as a tourist destination etc.

In the olden days every Naga village had a gate like this one. Carved village gate of Khonoma village, showing stylised Mithun horns, a warrior wearing Angami headdress, circles and stripes. The entire gate is painted with different colours and is built inside a stone structure made of red coloured stones.
As part of the 'Khonoma Green Village Project' (KGVP) supported by the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture, eco-tourism is being promoted in Khonoma village. CEE is one of the agencies involved in conducting environmental impact assessment (EIA) to avoid any environmental damage that may happen because of tourism. Guidelines, codes of conduct and environmental indicators are being worked out before the tourist flow starts.
Khonoma, an Angami Naga village in Nagaland, situated 21 km west of Kohima is endowed with rich forest cover and rare biodiversity. CEE started working in Khonoma way back in 1994, soon after the launch of CEE North-East in 1993. As the interest of the people grew in CEE's programmes, the modest environmental awareness was scaled up and projects like BAIDIK (Biodiversity Awareness Integration through Documentation of Indigenous Knowledge), NEEPS (National Environment Education Programmes for Schools) and Darwin Initiative (Conserving India's Biodiversity through NGO training and Projects with Local communities) were taken up by CEE in Khonoma. The interventions helped strengthen capacities of the local community.
As a result of environmental awareness created Khonoma has reserved about 70 sq km of its village forest as 'Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary' (KNCTS). The formation of KNCTS is a remarkable achievement. The 'Village Council' of Khonoma (the apex governing body of the village) since 1998 has banned hunting not only in KNCTS but in the entire forest area of the village. KNCTS is a unique example of the community initiative for wildlife and environment conservation
Recently, the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture, through the Nagaland State Department of Tourism has provided support to initiate KGVP for the development of eco-tourism using the resources of KNCTS and the cultural heritage of Khonoma. This is first of its kind project in the country. Many other agencies have also extended support to this initiative.
A 2-day workshop on various aspects of the Khonoma EIA study was organized by 'Khonoma Tourism Development Board' (KTDB) at Khonoma where CEE and two other agencies were invited to share the EIA study. The rationale, objective, methodology followed and important highlights of the Khonoma EIA study were discussed in the workshop. Some basic indicators to be adopted for the monitoring and impact assessment process were explained.
Some of the recommendations of the study are: to have a strong monitoring system and reduce or minimize negative impacts of tourism; to continue the EIA study process from time to time; to encourage the entire village to give inputs into the EIA study data body, especially in terms of traditions and legends; documentation and development of the legends of Khonoma; documentation of history of Khonoma; identification and development of Unique Selling Propositions (USP) of Khonoma (these may be some birds and plant species, agriculture, monsoon, crop harvesting); designing packages for tourism in Khonoma with detailed itinerary; organizing village youth as tourist guides, imparting them necessary training, sending them out for more professional training and exposure; selling local products, i.e., handicraft and handloom; inviting members of the travel media to come, experience and write on Khonoma, to popularize it as a tourist destination etc.
