Polar packs: Opened in 1994 in the the heart of Norwegian Lapland, Polar Park is the world's northernmost wildlife park. Well within the Arctic Circle, it is situated about one hour's drive from the town of Narvik (itself a 90 minute flight north from Oslo).

The highlight of this animal sanctuary is its population of seven grey wolves. Although they were all bred in captivity, some are more accustomed to humans than others. This means they are divided into three packs, each of which lives in a separate enclosure.

"Russian people think of Lake Baikal as the jewel of Siberia," explains Jack Sheremetoff, a local guide who also owns a popular hostel in Irkutsk. "Most lakes are less than 20,000 years old -- Baikal is at least 25 million years old. UNESCO referred to the lake as the 'Galapagos of Russia' when they made it a World Heritage site in 1996."

After 11 years of freediving in Irish waters I have seen many types of beautiful jellyfish, but the summer last year was exceptionally warm and sunny and the ocean was a different place. There were amazing runs of moon and compass jellyfish. My girlfriend and I were on a freedive session when we discovered these amazing clouds of moon jellyfish. We immediately began swimming among them, enjoying the pulsing as they propelled themselves along.
