Kofun (古墳, from Sino-Japanese "ancient grave") are megalithic tombs or tumuli in Japan, constructed between the early 3rd century and the early 7th century AD. They gave their name to the Kofun period (middle 3rd century to early-middle 6th century). Many of the Kofun have distinctive keyhole-shaped mounds (zenpo-koenfun (前方後円墳)), which are unique to ancient Japan. The Mozu-Furuichi kofungun or tumulus clusters have been proposed for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List, while Ishibutai Kofun is one of a number in Asuka-Fujiwara similarly residing on the Tentative List.
The kofun tumuli have assumed various shapes throughout history. The most common type of kofun is known as a zempō-kōen-fun (前方後円墳), which is shaped like a keyhole, having one square end and one circular end, when viewed from above. There are also circular-type (empun (円墳)), "two conjoined rectangles" typed (zempō-kōhō-fun (前方後方墳)), and square-type (hōfun (方墳)) kofun. Orientation of kofun is not specified. For example, in the Saki Kofun group, all of the circular parts are facing north, but there is no such formation in the Yanagimoto kofun group. Haniwa, terracotta figures, were arrayed above and in the surroundings to delimit and protect the sacred areas.
Japanese art covers a wide range of art styles and media, including ancient pottery, sculpture, ink painting and calligraphy on silk and paper, ukiyo-e paintings and woodblock prints, kiri-e, kirigami, origami, and more recently manga—modern Japanese cartooning and comics—along with a myriad of other types of works of art. It has a long history, ranging from the beginnings of human habitation in Japan, sometime in the 10th millennium BC, to the present.
Historically, Japan has been subject to sudden invasions of new and alien ideas followed by long periods of minimal contact with the outside world. Over time the Japanese developed the ability to absorb, imitate, and finally assimilate those elements of foreign culture that complemented their aesthetic preferences. The earliest complex art in Japan was produced in the 7th and 8th centuries in connection with Buddhism. In the 9th century, as the Japanese began to turn away from China and develop indigenous forms of expression, the secular arts became increasingly important; until the late 15th century, both religious and secular arts flourished. After the Ōnin War (1467–1477), Japan entered a period of political, social, and economic disruption that lasted for over a century. In the state that emerged under the leadership of the Tokugawa shogunate, organized religion played a much less important role in people's lives, and the arts that survived were primarily secular.

Kofun are old tomb mounds found throughout Japan. The monumentally large ones date from before 300 AD though about 550 AD. This video is about a kofun in Yao City, Osaka, which has been partially restored to its original appearance, and is part of a Google Earth presentation which can be accessed at http://googleearthcommunity.proboards.com/post/1886/thread

The landscape of Japan hides many typical ancient megastructures, that are not found in this form in any other part of the world. They are called kofun, which means ‘ancient mound tomb’ or ‘ancient grave’ in Japanese and related languages. The best known is the Daisen Kofun, measuring 480 by 300 metres and a height of 35 metres, but there are many others as wellFrom the ground, large kofun often look like just another hill or mountain. But from the air their particular keyhole shape can be seen. A keyhole-shaped kofun is typically a tumulus divided in a part where a royal was buried (the round part of the ‘keyhole’) and a space for the performance of rituals. Nowadays, kofun are the property of the Japanese emperor. They are forbidden territory. Japanese people still believe that they hav ...

Ishibutai Kofun is a mysterious tomb in the Asuka region. It's believed to be the early 7th Century tomb of a powerful minister of state known as Soga no Umako. Very little was found there because tomb is believed to have been robbed a long time ago. If it was Umako's grave it would make sense since his son and grandson apparently tried to take on more power and were eventually crushed by enemies who later became the future emperors Tenji and Temmu. Kofun were ancient mound tombs built in Japan from around 250 AD to the early 7th Century when the spread of Buddhism brought this practice to an end.

It's time to tell the truth to anyone who cares to know what brought him to this point
Curled up into a ball, his thumbs the only things that could break his fall
Almost out of air, far beyond repair, doomed
The time is wearing thin, the technicolor's gone
See it all now in black and white
So now, please, it's your last drop of air
So now, breathe, and take your very first
Breath of water
Allow yourself this one
Breath of water
Allow yourself this one
Allow yourself this one last breath
He ran away from home, leaving a trace for friends to hunt and find him in the snow
But a scent is not enough, and we're barely sure he's strong enough to survive the cold
Almost out of air, far beyond repair, doomed
The time is wearing thin, the technicolor's gone
See it all now in black and white
So now, please, it's your last drop of air
So now, breathe, and take your very first
Breath of water
Allow yourself this one
Breath of water
Allow yourself this one
Allow yourself this one last breath
I'd rather spare the truth from anyone who cares to know exactly how we found him
But it's time to share the truth with anyone who cares, he goes out too deep alone
So now ...
...breath of water
Allow yourself this one
Breath of water
Allow yourself this one
Allow yourself this one
Allow yourself this one last breath
