The Rosetta Stone is a granodiorite stele inscribed with a decree issued at Memphis, Egypt, in 196 BC on behalf of King Ptolemy V. The decree appears in three scripts: the upper text is Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, the middle portion Demotic script, and the lowest Ancient Greek. Because it presents essentially the same text in all three scripts (with some minor differences among them), it provided the key to the modern understanding of Egyptian hieroglyphs.
Although it is believed to have originally been displayed within a temple, possibly at nearby Sais, the stone was probably moved during the early Christian or medieval period and was eventually used as building material in the construction of Fort Julien near the town of Rashid (Rosetta) in the Nile Delta. It was rediscovered there in 1799 by a soldier, Pierre-François Bouchard, of the Napoleonic expedition to Egypt. As the first Ancient Egyptian bilingual text recovered in modern times, the Rosetta Stone aroused widespread public interest with its potential to decipher this previously untranslated ancient language. Lithographic copies and plaster casts began circulating among European museums and scholars. Meanwhile, British troops defeated the French in Egypt in 1801, and the original stone came into British possession under the Capitulation of Alexandria. Transported to London, it has been on public display at the British Museum since 1802. It is the most-visited object in the British Museum.
Study of the decree was already under way as the first full translation of the Greek text appeared in 1803. It was 20 years, however, before the transliteration of the Egyptian scripts was announced by Jean-François Champollion in Paris in 1822; it took longer still before scholars were able to read Ancient Egyptian inscriptions and literature confidently. Major advances in the decoding were recognition that the stone offered three versions of the same text (1799); that the demotic text used phonetic characters to spell foreign names (1802); that the hieroglyphic text did so as well, and had pervasive similarities to the demotic (Thomas Young, 1814); and that, in addition to being used for foreign names, phonetic characters were also used to spell native Egyptian words (Champollion, 1822–1824).
Ever since its rediscovery, the stone has been the focus of nationalist rivalries, including its transfer from French to British possession during the Napoleonic Wars, a long-running dispute over the relative value of Young and Champollion's contributions to the decipherment, and since 2003, demands for the stone's return to Egypt.
Two other fragmentary copies of the same decree were discovered later, and several similar Egyptian bilingual or trilingual inscriptions are now known, including two slightly earlier Ptolemaic decrees (the Decree of Canopus in 238 BC, and the Memphis decree of Ptolemy IV, ca. 218 BC). The Rosetta Stone is, therefore, no longer unique, but it was the essential key to modern understanding of Ancient Egyptian literature and civilization. The term Rosetta Stone is now used in other contexts as the name for the essential clue to a new field of knowledge.

The Coptic calendar called the Alexandrian calendar, is used by the Coptic Orthodox Church and still used in Egypt. This calendar is based on the ancient Egyptian calendar. To avoid the calendar creep of the latter, a reform of the ancient Egyptian calendar was introduced at the time of Ptolemy III (Decree of Canopus, in 238 BC) which consisted of the intercalation of a sixth epagomenal day every fourth year. However, this reform was opposed by the Egyptian priests, and the idea was not adopted until 25 BC, when the Roman Emperor Augustus formally reformed the calendar of Egypt, keeping it forever synchronized with the newly introduced Julian calendar. To distinguish it from the Ancient Egyptian calendar, which remained in use by some astronomers until medieval times, this reformed calendar is known as the Coptic calendar. Its years and months coincide with those of the Ethiopian calendar but have different numbers and names
This calendar is based on the ancient Egyptian calendar.the Copts chose the year 284AD to mark the beginning of the calendar, since this year saw the seating of Diocletian as Rome’s emperor and the consequent martyrdom of thousands upon thousands of Egypt’s Christians.
Apart from the Church’s celebration, Copts celebrate the New Year by eating red dates, which are now in season, believing the red symbolises the martyrs’ blood and the white date heart the martyrs’ pure hearts
The Coptic New Year is the very first calendar ever known by man on planet earth! It goes back 4241 BC.The word "Nayrouz" is of Coptic origin. The stem is niiaro-oo meaning: "the rivers." The suffex "ouz" is Greek, thus, the word "Niiaroouz." Mid September is usually where the waters of the Nile river rises, so the prayers are lifted to God for the rising of the waters of the rivers for irrigation and ask for His blessings at the beginning (crown) of the Coptic Calendar year. When the Persian ruled Egypt from 525-405 BC, they adopted the word and incorporated it in their language and took it to mean "the beginning of their Persian year," and called it "Nayrouz." The word "Nayrouz" in Persian, means "the new year.

Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky. With a visual apparent magnitude of −1.46, it is almost twice as bright as Canopus, the next brightest star. The name "Sirius" is derived from the Ancient Greek: Σείριος Seirios ("glowing" or "scorcher"). The star has the Bayer designation Alpha Canis Majoris (α CMa). What the naked eye perceives as a single star is actually a binary star system, consisting of a white main-sequence star of spectral type A1V, termed Sirius A, and a faint white dwarf companion of spectral type DA2, called Sirius B. The distance separating Sirius A from its companion varies between 8.2 and 31.5 AU.
Sirius appears bright because of both its intrinsic luminosity and its proximity to Earth. At a distance of 2.6 parsecs (8.6 ly), as determined by the Hipparcos astrometry satellite, the Sirius system is one of Earth's near neighbors. Sirius is gradually moving closer to the Solar System, so it will slightly increase in brightness over the next 60,000 years. After that time its distance will begin to recede, but it will continue to be the brightest star in the Earth's sky for the next 210,000 years.
Sirius A is about twice as massive as the Sun and has an absolute visual magnitude of 1.42. It is 25 times more luminous than the Sun but has a significantly lower luminosity than other bright stars such as Canopus or Rigel. The system is between 200 and 300 million years old. It was originally composed of two bright bluish stars. The more massive of these, Sirius B, consumed its resources and became a red giant before shedding its outer layers and collapsing into its current state as a white dwarf around 120 million years ago.
Sirius is also known colloquially as the "Dog Star", reflecting its prominence in its constellation, Canis Major (Greater Dog). The heliacal rising of Sirius marked the flooding of the Nile in Ancient Egypt and the "dog days" of summer for the ancient Greeks, while to the Polynesians it marked winter and was an important star for navigation around the Pacific Ocean.Sirius, known in ancient Egypt as Sopdet (Greek: Σῶθις = Sothis), is recorded in the earliest astronomical records. During the era of the Middle Kingdom, Egyptians based their calendar on the heliacal rising of Sirius, namely the day it becomes visible just before sunrise after moving far enough away from the glare of the Sun. This occurred just before the annual flooding of the Nile and the summer solstice, after a 70-day absence from the skies. The hieroglyph for Sothis features a star and a triangle. Sothis was identified with the great goddess Isis, who formed a part of a triad with her husband Osiris and their son Horus, while the 70-day period symbolised the passing of Isis and Osiris through the duat (Egyptian underworld).
The ancient Greeks observed that the appearance of Sirius heralded the hot and dry summer, and feared that it caused plants to wilt, men to weaken, and women to become aroused. Due to its brightness, Sirius would have been noted to twinkle more in the unsettled weather conditions of early summer. To Greek observers, this signified certain emanations which caused its malignant influence. Anyone suffering its effects was said to be astroboletos (ἀστροβόλητος) or "star-struck". It was described as "burning" or "flaming" in literature. The season following the star's heliacal rising (i.e. rising with the Sun) came to be known as the Dog Days of summer. The inhabitants of the island of Ceos in the Aegean Sea would offer sacrifices to Sirius and Zeus to bring cooling breezes, and would await the reappearance of the star in summer. If it rose clear, it would portend good fortune; if it was misty or faint then it foretold (or emanated) pestilence. Coins retrieved from the island from the 3rd century BC feature dogs or stars with emanating rays, highlighting Sirius' importance. The Romans celebrated the heliacal setting of Sirius around April 25, sacrificing a dog, along with incense, wine, and a sheep, to the goddess Robigo so that the star's emanations would not cause wheat rust on wheat crops that yearSirius is a binary star system consisting of two white stars orbiting each other with a separation of about 20 astronomical units (3.0×109 km; 1.9×109 mi)[note 7] (roughly the distance between the Sun and Uranus) and a period of 50.1 years. The brighter component, termed Sirius A, is a main-sequence star of spectral type A1V, with an estimated surface temperature of 9,940 K.[8] Its companion, Sirius B, is a star that has already evolved off the main sequence and become a white dwarf. Currently 10,000 times less luminous in the visual spectrum, Sirius B was once the more massive of the two.The age of the system has been estimated at around 230 million years. Early in its lifespan it was thought to have been two bluish white stars orbiting each other in an elliptical orbit every 9.1 years.

wn.com/Sirius Is The Brightest Star In The Night Sky.
Cairo is Africa’s largest city and the heart of the Arab world, extreme poverty living next to opulent wealth, and modern, Western boutiques next to ancient souks. The Cairo Museum is home to the most extensive collection of Egyptian antiquities, including the golden mask and tomb of Tutankamun. Towering above almost any other human achievement are the impressive three pyramids of Gisa. The Cheops Pyramid, the world’s largest single construction, took four hundred thousand workers twenty years to build. It weighs as much as all the cathedrals in Europe put together and spans an area of 53,000 square metres - the height of a fifty storey skyscraper. In the middle of today’s modern city of Luxor, known as the ‘Capital City Of The Pharaohs’, the Luxor Temple stretches along the eastern banks of the Nile and, not far away, the temple complex of Karnak and the Amun Temple. 67 kilometres from Luxor, on the western bank of the Nile, lies the Temple Of Dendera, the most important place of worship for the love goddess, HATHOR, whose heavenly appearance was portrayed by the body of a cow. At Aswan, the landscape of the Nile is enchanting, but it is the stone temples of Abu Simbel that take one back to ancient Egypt, land of the Pharaohs, and archaeological paradise.

Cairo is a world metropolis and tantamount to being an open-air museum. The Nile divides it in two and the centre of the city contains modern shops and office buildings in close proximity to medieval churches and ancient mosques.
The Khan el-Khalili bazaar is like something from a bygone age and where the Orient combines with the Middle Ages, 'A Thousand And One Nights' amid Islamic Cairo. Goods inspired by pharaohs Tutankhamen and Nefertiti are in constant demand and it's where haggling is the norm. The bazaar is a colorful place with smoking hookahs, exotic carpets and musical instruments as well as a huge array of herbs and spices.
Abu Serga is the city's oldest church and dates back to Fatima times. It was built on the ruins of an even older church in the Coptic district of Cairo. The three-aisled basilica was founded by Roman Christians at the end of the 4th century.
Built in 1902, the Egyptian Museum's 150,000 exhibits amount to being one of the greatest historical collections in the world. When both the Greek and Roman civilizations had reached the zenith of their power, Egypt already had a history that dated back almost 3,000 years.
In 1830, King Mohammed Ali had a mosque built and named it after himself but it is now more commonly known as the Alabaster Mosque. It was 18 years in construction and was built on the site of a former Mamluk Palace.
Egypt and its capital of Cairo is the oldest cultural land on Earth. A country that impresses with both its 5,000 years of history and lively modern spirit.

The Pyramids Of Gizeh are undoubtedly one of the most impressive and famous historic sites of ancient Egypt, the land of the Pharaohs, a land whose treasures are still, more than four thousand years after their construction, remarkable. A total of 2.3 million stone blocks form the largest pyramid, the Cheops, that was built in around 2560 B.C. on an elevated plateau on the edge of the western desert. The huge contours of the pyramids of Gizeh still dominate Cairo’s surrounding landscape. Their dimensions symbolize timeless power and in red shining colours the sky announces the fall of dusk and highlights the dramatic, magical beauty of these monuments. The Step Pyramid of King Djoser rises up almost seventy metres above the ground and it was the world’s first monumental stone building. Thus the Step Pyramid is often referred to as the ‘mother of all pyramids’. A narrow maze-like corridor leads from the outside world into the dark depths of the pyramid and the Pharaoh´s tomb. The flowering period of Thebes began in the Middle Empire when it became the new capital and lasted up until around the 14th century B.C. when Memphis regained its importance and influence. Today Thebes is closely connected with this town of death along the western shore of the Nile and the legendary Valley Of The Kings. In 1922 the discovery of the royal tomb of Tutenkhamen by British archaeologist, Howard Carter, was particularly important. After five years of excavation the scientists were successful and the spectacular treasures surpassed their highest expectations. Although Tutenkhamen died at the tender age of nineteen, his rule thus having little historical significance, the treasures in his tomb made him one of the most famous kings of Ancient Egypt. Today his legendary sarcophagus, that is made entirely of gold, is exhibited in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Up until now more than seventy tombs have been found in the neighbouring Valley Of The Queens. Princes who died at an early age were also buried there and the grave of Nefertari, the wife of Ramses the Second, is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the valley. The Land of the Pharaohs is a fantastic and colourful journey into the intriguing depths of ancient history.

Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Sharm El-Sheikh, which lies on the Sinai Peninsula opposite or Hurghada. This
is the new holiday Capital of Egypt which awaits vacationers arriving to see the coral reefs of the Red Sea, but it's also a perfect place to start an excursion to Biblical Monuments of the Peninsula.
Sharm El-Sheikh lies on the Sinai Peninsula opposite or Hurghada. This is the new holiday Capital of Egypt which awaits vacationers arriving to see the coral reefs of the Red Sea, but it's also a perfect place to start an excursion to Biblical Monuments of the Peninsula. Together with the Na'ama and the Shark Bays, Sharm El-Sheikh became a tourist center only in the last decade. Tourist can familiarize themselves with characteristic Egyptian souvenirs on the coastal shopping street of the city.
The main role is played by the water pipes or shishas which are perfect as an ornament. The statues depict Pharaohs and Egyptian gods, and the baskets of the street merchants are full of spices. Arabian clothes are very popular as well as T-shirts printed with local motifs, and bottles filled with colored sand from the desert. The caricature-like ceramics depicting the everyday Arab life are really extraordinary. One can combine an eventful though tiring Archaeological tour with a holiday providing full relaxation. The hotel prices are very good, the weather very warm from spring to autumn, and moreover, the holiday centers of Egypt can be reached easily from all over Europe since Sharm El-Sheikh has its own International Airport. The level of service is usually a pleasant surprise to those who have never been to Egypt before.
A name of the customers' choice can be carved or written on copper plates or papyrus with either Egyptian hieroglyphs or Latin letters. Since most hotels have their own beaches, public beaches are very rare, however there are some in Na'ama Bay. The pride of the growing city is the palm tree lane behind the hotels and the brand new Islamic mosque built for the Arabs working and living here.
The old market was a bazaar at the time when only fisherman lived here. Fishing nets and storm lanterns can still be purchased at the market. Formerly, it was only a vegetable and fruit market, but for the sake of tourists, the supply was broaden by copper plates and silverware, papyrus, alabaster statues, and postcards.
Near the grocery store, a goat is begging and willing to be photographed, fully aware of its special status.
The hotels here are made up of long buildings, not high skyscrapers. The buildings and apartments are situated in beautiful parks surrounding uniquely designed pools. The hotels have their own beaches with not only the possibility to rent water sports equipment but to take diving and surfing lessons as well. There are two ways of diving, the simpler one is with the goggles and the pipe and is called snorkeling, while the other one is done in a diving suit with and oxygen tank and is called scuba diving. Both sports can be practiced in the Red Sea and the necessary can be rented or purchased.

Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Hurghada, a holiday resort in Egypt which stretches from Safaga throughout
the Makadi Bay until Dahar, a coast of 25 kilometers which is now full of beautiful hotels and apartments. Hurghada has two centers, Sakala and Dahar. Transportation is solved by buses of the travel agencies by taxis or by cheaper larger taxis.
As a holiday resort, Hurghada has a sum of longer history than Sharm el-Sheik. This resort which stretches from Safaga throughout the Makadi Bay until'Dahar is a coast of 25 kilometers, which is now full of beautiful hotels and apartments.
Hurghada has two centers, Sakala and Dahar. Transportation is solved by buses of the travel agencies, by taxis or by cheaper larger taxis. In the city, there is an aquarium and maritime museum despite the fact that it does not require much effort at all to encounter the creatures of the red sea in their natural habitat.
Dahar is mostly known for its shops and restaurants, there are not too many monuments. Well known as the newly built Islamic mosque which was consecrated only a few years ago but looks as if it were several hundred years old. The modest church of the Copts is much older.
The Greeks called the Egyptians, Aegyptos, hence the Arabic, Gypt, which became Copt though the centuries. According to the chronicles, it was Saint Mark who brought Christianity to Alexandria in the 1st century. The five Patriarchs parted ways with the Catholic Church in the 451, today around 7% of the population belongs to this denomination.
All the hotels are on the seaside and have their own beaches and harbors. The hotels try to please their visitors in all kinds of ways. There are small pools, slides near the larger pools but children's pools and the Jacuzzis are also everywhere. Besides European cuisines, they also offer Arab Dishes, mostly an imitation Bedouin tense. One can enjoy a hookah pipe and belly dancing here. If there's no separate children's restaurants, there is a children's menu. Host and program directors take care of sports and recreation, and there's a different kind of production each evening.
Glass bottomed boats depart from several hotels to the nearby, uninhabited Giftun Island. The Red Sea has one of the largest fish populations on earth. There's an opportunity to sea playful dolphins during such a trip since 4 dolphin subspecies live here. Besides the uncredible number of corals, starfish, mussels and crabs, there are three kinds of turtles, calamares, octopi, jellyfish, and rays living here. The most beautiful of the fishes are the 10 centimeter long yellow, turquoise, orange or blue fishes that swim around the coral reefs. The most well-known are the sail fish, the clown fish, the king fish, and the unusually shaped stone fish.

Cairo travel guide, Cairo Attractions, Cairo Hotels,Cairo Restaurants,Tourism in Egypt, Vacation Egypt, Giza, Pyramids, Cairo Museum
From the Pyramids of Giza and traders' banter at Khan al-Khalili bazaar to sailing on the Nile, it's no surprise that Cairo is dubbed the Mother of All Cities by Egyptians.
Egypt's capital, and Africa's largest city, boasts attractions of biblical proportions -- literally. Giza's Sphinx and pyramids are iconic as to be beyond description. Add to this the astonishing gold of Tutankhamun buried in the dusty corridors of the Cairo Museum, the Islamic treasures of bejewelled mosques, labyrinthine medieval alleyways lined with tempting spices and colourful textiles and the daily shrill calls to prayer rising above the cacophony of car horns and crowded streets.
Escape from the city's bustle by ordering a mint tea in a traditional ahwa (coffeehouse) or taking a felucca ride on the river Nile, Cairo's lifeblood and Africa's most significant waterway.
==============================
Cairo History
Cairo has been ruled by Persians, Pharaohs, Romans, Arabian caliphs, British colonials and more, and nurtured the establishment of the Jewish, Christian and Islamic religions. Not surprisingly, for today's visitor, the beauty is seeing those centuries unfold in layers, often juxtaposed into modern-day living.
The original ancient city was actually Memphis, now 24km (15 miles) southwest of Cairo, founded in 2,000 BC and ruled by King Menes who united Upper and Lower Egypt. Fustat, as 'modern-day' Cairo was known, was founded some 3,000 years later and was one of the world's greatest, and largest cities and home to Egypt's first mosque.
There embarked a period of huge construction of some of the city's most prominent landmarks. The Fatimids established the Al-Azhar mosque (one of the world's oldest Islamic universities) located in Islamic Cairo, the medieval quarter also home to the sprawling market streets of Khan el-Khalili.
Once the Mamaluk Sultanate was captured by the Ottoman Empire, they shifted most of the trading back to Constantinople and Cairo became little more than a provincial town. The mkedieval curse, the Black Death, struck the city countless times reducing the population by hundreds of thousands. Cairo's place on the spice route was all but diminished.
The Ottomans were soon unseated by Napoleonic troops who occupied Cairo in the late 18th century, later falling to British troops.
Muhammad Ali Pasha was considered to be the founder of modern Egypt, with social and economic reforms and huge construction in the early 19th century. His grandson Ismail Pasha continued that modernization process, inspired by the broad boulevards of Paris, and his legacy can still be seen around today's Downtown Cairo.
Debt let to British occupation lasting well into the 20th century, but huge demonstrations led to Egypt's independence declared in 1922 and Sultan Ahmad Fuad became King Fuad I. His son King Farouk I later married Queen Farida Zulficar.
Since World War II, Cairo's development has been intense, its huge and fast-growing population leading to its current status as the largest city in Africa and the Muslim world.

Weather in Cairo
Best time to visit:
Spring (Mar-Apr) and autumn (mid Sep-Oct) are most comfortable, when daytime temperatures reach 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). Sultry summer (Jun-Aug) reach the high 30s. For those who hate the heat, winter (Dec-Jan) December and January are pleasantly cool (20 deg C / 68 deg F). Ramadan shifts ten days back annually -- in 2011 will begin in early August. During the month, many eateries will close during daylight hours, and some bars close for the entire month, but the city is festooned in decorative lights with traditional music at nights in Islamic Cairo. During the major festivals of Eid ul fitr and Eid ul Adha, many locals travel so flights, trains and buses could well be booked up in advance.

==============================
======================

Shepherd Entertainment takes you on a tour of Saqqara, which was the burial mound of Memphis. There are monuments from at
least 3000 years on this 7 kilometer long limestone plateau, from the earliest graves to the monastery of the Copt Christians.
Saqqara was the burial mound of Memphis. There are monuments from at least 3000 years on this 7 kilometer long limestone plateau, from the earliest graves to the monastery of the Copt Christians. These buildings, which were covered by sand, were excavated by Auguste Mariette, but there are new findings even today.
Imhotep surrounded the Djoser Pyramid with a 10 meter wall with false doors. There were bastions and tabernacles while within the wall were shrines, halls and chapels. The wall was ornamented by a cobras head. The corridor leading to the yard is bordered by 40 pillars, imitating palm trees. The largest and well know monument of Saqqara is the pyramid of the Pharaoh Djoser. This is the first such structure to be called pyramid, before that, people bury their dead in mastabas. The design of the pyramid is associated with Imhotep, who was not only the greatest Architect of the 3rd dynasty, but also a high priest and a General of the Pharaoh. It was probably his idea to put 6 smaller and smaller square mastabas on top of each other, which led to the shape of the pyramid. His works set an example for Royal Architects for several centuries. Later the stairs of the pyramid were filles up and its size was covered to achieve a perfect pyramid shape.
In a northeastern corner of the area, an extremely deep cistern was discovered. From the bastion above it, the burial ground of the Saint -- bowls, the Serapium, can be seen perfectly, as well as the distant Pyramids of Giza.
It's widely known that all European power, the Germans, the Italians, but mostly the French and the British were present at the rediscovery of Egypt.
Those who are interested in Egyptology might know the names of Denon, Shante Leon, Lazoni, Mariette, Broch, Lepzius, Gaston Maspereau, and of course Howard Carter. Let's not forget the Italian, Girolamo Zagato, who found the entrance of the pyramid in 1820 while drawing a map.
The oldest graffiti in the world originates from the 12th century B.C. It can be found on the wall of one of the side buildings under the protection of a glass case. If one were to do something like this today, it is possible that the author would visit the local jail sooner than his graffiti would be protected by a glass case, the guards are there to prevent any kind of disruption.
The serdab is the close statue chamber of tomb chapels or mastabas from where the Pharaohs statue looks out to the outside world, this is how his soul preserved his relationship with the living. There is the original entrance on the southern side of the pyramid while on the northern one, there is new one, cut by Archaeologists. The burial chambers found beneath the pyramid around the middle of the building. The maze of corridors and chambers is almost 5 kilometers long and is probably connected to the cistern. There are lots of corridors which have not been fully discovered.
The Pyramid of Teti looks like a piece of rubble on the outside but is very interesting on the inside. There aren't too many pyramids which are open to the public. The walls are covered with texts and the ceiling depicts the night sky. The greatest mastaba is the one of Mereruka and his wife, the son in law, and daughter of Teti. One can even see Meruruka himself in the complicated mastaba, which has more than 30 rooms, as his life size statue steps out of a door. There were several claims which stated that grave robbers instantly fled as they saw the statue in the dim light. Almost square meter of the walls is covered by engraving, pictures or hieroglyphs, which introduce viewers to life in ancient times, hunting, fishing, agriculture and animal husbandry. In other pictures, one can see the scenes of raising a child, celebrations, and potters at work.

(Also available on a high-quality DVD from the Megalithomania website).....Author of The New Pyramid Age and The Stone Puzzle of Rosslyn Chapel, Philip goes in search of the origins and symbolism of crystal skulls -- and offered a world exclusive. Conferences can be dangerous places... Speaking at an Edinburgh conference, a friend of the Mitchell-Hedges family related to Philip the extra-ordinary story of how Mitchell-Hedges truly discovered the crystal skull. Sworn to secrecy until after Anna Mitchell-Hedges' death, by an amazing coincidence, almost coincidentally, Spielberg and Lucas announced that the new Indiana Jones movie would be called "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull". It set about a series of discoveries, which also puts the symbolism of crystal skulls in a new perspective that was revealed for the first time in Glastonbury....Philip Coppens is an author and investigative journalist, ranging from the world of politics to ancient history and mystery. He is the editor-in-chief of the Dutch magazine Frontier and the online REAL NEWSpaper and a frequent contributor to Nexus Magazine. Since 1995, he has lectured extensively, across the world. Were Greek Gods Extraterrestrial Beings. The human species is beginning to ask new questions as to our origins and as to the presence of extraterrestrial life on Earth. In this interview, Philip speaks of Erich von Däniken’s newest book titled, Odyssey of the Gods.
Using painstaking archaeological research and evidence from the writings of Plato and Aristotle, he suggests that the Greek myths were, in fact, very much a reality. He suggests that the Greek gods were actually extraterrestrial beings who arrived on Earth many thousands of years ago. You may find von Däniken conclusions astounding, but they are argued with such vigor and clarity that you’ll be forced to consider the implications of his findings for mankind.
Philip Coppens is an author and investigative journalist, ranging from the world of politics to ancient history and mystery. He co-hosts The Spirit Revolution radio show with his wife Kathleen McGowan and is a frequent contributor to NEXUS Magazine and Atlantis Rising Magazine. Since 1995, he has lectured extensively and has appeared in a number of television and DVD documentaries, including Ancient Aliens: The Series (The History Channel). He is the author of The Stone Puzzle of Rosslyn Chapel, The Canopus Revelation, Land of the Gods, The New Pyramid Age, Servants of the Grail, the ebook 2012, Science or Fiction?, Killing Kennedy and The Ancient Alien Question.

Roman Architecture (HSAR 252)
Professor Kleiner focuses on Ostia, the port of Rome, characterized by its multi-storied residential buildings and its widespread use of brick-faced concrete. She begins with the city's public face--the Forum, Capitolium, Theater, and Piazzale delle Corporazioni. The Piazzale, set behind the Theater, was the location of various shipping companies with black-and-white mosaics advertising their business. Professor Kleiner examines the Baths of Neptune and the Insula of Diana, a brick apartment building with four floors that housed a number of Ostia's working families. The Insula of Diana and other similar structures, including warehouses like the Horrea Epagathiana, demonstrate a fundamental feature of second-century Ostia: the appreciation of the aesthetic qualities of brick facing. Since the time of Nero, brick was customarily covered with stucco and paint, but these Ostian buildings are faced with exposed brick, the color, texture, and design of which make it attractive in its own right. The lecture ends with a survey of several single family dwellings in Ostia, including the fourth-century House of Cupid and Psyche, notable for the pastel-colored marble revetment on its walls and floors and for a charming statue of the legendary lovers.
00:00 - Chapter 1. Ostia: Romes First Colony
12:37 - Chapter 2. Civic Architecture in Ostia
23:32 - Chapter 3. Transacting Business at the Piazzale delle Corporazioni
36:57 - Chapter 4. Residential Architecture at Ostia: The Insulae
49:43 - Chapter 5. The Warehouses of Ostia
56:19 - Chapter 6. Painted Decoration and Mosaic Floors
01:04:33 - Chapter 7. Re-emergence of the Domus at Ostia and Tombs at Isola Sacra
