Now here is something I would really love to hear everyone's opinion on - do you prefer Carabosse to be played by a man or by a woman?
This video is a compariative viewing of Alexey Loparevich of the Bolshoi Ballet and Kristen McNally of the Royal Ballet playing Carabosse the Wicked Fairy in the Prologue of "The Sleeping Beauty".
I, myself, am a Petipa purist, but I actually prefer Carabosse to be played by a woman rather than a man because I think the women do a much better job at playing the Wicked Fairy.
In the original 1890 production, Carabosse was played by a man - Enrico Cecchetti (who also danced the Bluebird) and since the première of "The Sleeping Beauty", Carabosse seems to have become a unisex role as some productions have her played by men, some by women and others occasionally switch between men and women. It is true that the 1890 production portrayed Carabosse as an old, ugly fairy, but as you can see from the video, the Royal Ballet portrays her in a younger light, which I personally think is a really good touch to the role.
The reason I think the women play Carabosse better than the men is because they make the character feel much more intimidating. With many of the male performers, we get some comic relief and are usually presented with a very mad old woman, but with the women, we are usually presented with a real badass villainess! I find that a female performer gives Carabosse a very dominating stage presence the minute she enters the stage, as well as a lot more character to the role. I also prefer the portrayal of her as a young wicked fairy rather than an old wicked fairy because well, villains don't need to be physically unattractive and scary looking in order to be evil and intimidating.
In fact, in various reviews I've read from the British critics on the Royal Ballet's "Sleeping Beauty", Carabosse has been described as "sexy"... well there's nothing wrong with a sexy villain or villainess lol!
From all the portrayals of Carabosse I've seen so far, the Royal Ballet's portrayal is by far my favourite - I think that Carabosse as a young wicked fairy and played by the women is a brilliant portrayal of the character. Some people may even say that this portrayal makes her a bit like Maleficent from the Disney "Sleeping Beauty"... well in all fairness, unless Carabosse can also turn into a fearsome fire-breathing dragon, I doubt she'd be able to take on the Mistress of All Evil... Lol!!
Now in all fairness, some of the men who regularly play Carabosse are really good actors and do a really good job at the role, e.g. Igor Kolb from the Mariinsky. They don't feel as if they're just men dressed up as women, so well done to them! Lol!

The Garden brings wonderful surprises; large moving fire sculptures, fire stained glass windows, fire fruits hanging from trees, fire flowers, swinging chairs, musicians, unicyclists…
On the Sunday night the Fire Garden will be the final show of the festival and Cie Carabosse will add some additional treats to the Garden – although there won’t be a huge fireworks display, there will be some low level pyrotechnic effects to mark the end of SIRF15.

The wicked fairy godmother, a figure rare in fairy tales, is nevertheless among best-known figures from such tales because of her appearance in one of the most widely known tales, Sleeping Beauty, and in the ballet derived from it. Anonymous in her first appearance, she was later named in some variants Carabosse, and in others Maleficent.
The oldest version of Sleeping Beauty that has been preserved is Sun, Moon, and Talia from Giambattista Basile's Pentamerone. This version does not feature any fairy godmothers; Talia's fate is prophesied, but is not caused by witchcraft.
Charles Perrault added the witch to his variant the story of Sleeping Beauty, "The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood" ("La Belle au bois dormant"), dating from 1697; he did not give her a name. The Brothers Grimm included a version, "Briar Rose", in their collected tales; their version included the witch and her namelessness; the only difference relating to the witches that in Perrault's version, seven fairies were invited, and she is the eighth, and in the Grimms', twelve were invited and so she is the thirteenth.

I, myself, am a Petipa purist, but I actually prefer Carabosse to be played by a woman rather than a man because I think the women do a much better job at playing the Wicked Fairy. In the original 1890 production, Carabosse was played by a man - Enrico Cecchetti (who also danced the Bluebird) and since the première of "The Sleeping Beauty", Carabosse seems to have become a unisex role as some productions have her played by men, some by women and others occasion... -

This video is a compariative viewing of Alexey Loparevich of the Bolshoi Ballet and Kristen McNally of the Royal Ballet playing Carabosse the Wicked Fairy in the Prologue of "The Sleeping Beauty".

It is true that the 1890 production portrayed Carabosse as an old, ugly fairy, but as you can see from the video, the Royal Ballet portrays her in a younger light, which I personally think is a really good touch to the role.
The reason I think the women play Carabosse better than the men is because they make the character feel much more intimidating. With many of the male performers, we get some comic relief and are usually presented with a very mad old woman, but with the women, we are usually presented with a real badass villainess! I find that a female performer gives Carabosse a very dominating stage presence the minute she enters the stage, as well as a lot more character to the role. I also prefer the portrayal of her as a young wicked fairy rather than an old wicked fairy because well, villains don't need to be physically unattractive and scary looking in order to be evil and intimidating.
In fact, in various reviews I've read from the British critics on the Royal Ballet's "Sleeping Beauty", Carabosse has been described as "sexy"... well there's nothing wrong with a sexy villain or villainess lol!
From all the portrayals of Carabosse I've seen so far, the Royal Ballet's portrayal is by far my favourite - I think that Carabosse as a young wicked fairy and played by the women is a brilliant portrayal of the character. Some people may even say that this portrayal makes her a bit like Maleficent from the Disney "Sleeping Beauty"... well in all fairness, unless Carabosse can also turn into a fearsome fire-breathing dragon, I doubt she'd be able to take on the Mistress of All Evil... Lol!!
Now in all fairness, some of the men who regularly play Carabosse are really good actors and do a really good job at the role, e.g. Igor Kolb from the Mariinsky. They don't feel as if they're just men dressed up as women, so well done to them! Lol!

About “Descendants” Movie
Disney's Descendants takes place in a present-day idyllic kingdom, where the benevolent teenaged son of the King and Queen (Beast and Belle from Disney's iconic Beauty and the Beast) is poised to take the throne. Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce, Booboo Stewart and Sofia Carson star as the teenage sons and daughters of Disney's most infamous villains, in Disney's Descendants, a live-action movie that – with a knowing wink at traditional fairy tales – fuses castles with classrooms to create a contemporary, music-driven story about the challenges in living up to parental and peer expectations. Made for kids, tweens and families, the movie premieres this September on Disney Channel. The notable cast also includes Mitchell Hope, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Maz Jobrani, Kathy Najimy and the Tony Award-winning Kristin Chenoweth.
Emmy Award-winning Kenny Ortega (High School Musical) directs, choreographs and executive-produces Disney's Descendants. Wendy Japhet (An Education, The Italian Job) is also an executive producer. Paul Becker (So You Think You Can Dance Canada) is the co-choreographer. The script was written by Josann McGibbon and Sara Parriott (creators and Emmy and WGA Award-nominated writers on The Starter Wife; writers of Runaway Bride), who are also co-producers. The story, set in the idyllic kingdom of Auradon, playfully presents the unexpected possibilities of what happens after the "happily ever after." As it unfolds, Ben, the benevolent teenage son of the King and Queen (Beast and Belle from Beauty and the Beast), is poised to take the throne. His first proclamation is to offer a chance at redemption to Mal, Evie, Carlos and Jay, the trouble-making offspring of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Cruella de Vil and Jafar, who have all been sequestered on the forbidden Isle of the Lost for 20 years. The Bergen County Players (BCP) presents Sleeping Beauty, a charming musical tale written by Jim Eiler with music by Eiler and Jeanne Bargy of the Prince Street Players. Under the direction of Lynne Lupfer, Sleeping Beauty will be performed at the Little Firehouse Theatre in Oradell from November 26th through December 18th, 2011, with shows at 8pm on Fridays and 1pm and 3:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
Sleeping Beauty is directed by Lynne Lupfer of Tenafly, a Life Member at BCP, making her mainstage directorial debut. In addition to directing countless shows throughout her career at Dwight Morrow High School and Park Ridge High School, she is the Founder and Artistic Director of the non-profit musical theater organization, Summertime Players, where she has produced and directed shows for years.
The enchanted story of Sleeping Beauty is brought to life by BCP's dynamic cast in a playful, interactive musical the whole family will enjoy. The tale involves beautiful Princess Melisande, who is cursed by an evil spell cast upon her by the wicked fairy, Trollarina. Upon pricking her finger on the forbidden spinning wheel she is doomed, but with the help of her loving fairy godmothers, the princess is sent into a deep sleep and can only be awakened by the kiss of a prince. The audience is sure to be left with a smile after experiencing the classic story where love conquers evil -- and even the youngest theatergoer will be excited to meet the cast for autographs after the show!
Tickets for the one hour production, priced at $13, can be purchased online at www.bcplayers.org, by calling 201-261-4200, or by visiting the box office at 298 Kinderkamack Road in Oradell during regular box office hours.

The timeless story of “Cinderella” dates back to 1697 when first created by Charles Perrault, although it truly came to life for millions all over the world in 1950 with Walt Disney’s celebrated animated feature.
Director Kenneth Branagh says: “It is impossible to think of Cinderella without thinking of Disney and the timeless images we’ve all grown up watching. And those classic moments are irresistible to a filmmaker. With Lily James we have found our perfect Cinderella. She combines knockout beauty with intelligence, wit, fun and physical grace. Her Prince is being played by Richard Madden, a young actor with incredible power and charisma. He is funny, smart and sexy and a great match for Cinderella.”
The story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of young Ella whose merchant father remarries following the tragic death of her mother. Keen to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother Lady Tremaine and her daughters Anastasia and Drisella into the family home. But, when Ella’s father suddenly and unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother’s dying words and to “have courage and be kind.” She will not give in to despair nor despise those who abuse her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an employee at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears as if her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming “Kit.” Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand as a kindly beggar woman steps forward and, armed with a pumpkin and a few mice, changes Cinderella’s life forever.

Mingle Media TV and our Red Carpet Report team with host Amy Long were at Downtown Disney District on Saturday the 17th October with the stars of Disney’s “Descendants” join in the celebration of the announcement of a sequel to the movie in the works and to sing along with the cast who were entertaining the fans with an on-stage, music and dance-filled event at the Disneyland Resort, in Anaheim, California.
Fans dressed as their favorite character even had a chance to come up on stage and meet the cast in person at this Q&A; event with the cast and director, Kenny Ortega.

About “Descendants” Movie
Disney's Descendants takes place in a present-day idyllic kingdom, where the benevolent teenaged son of the King and Queen (Beast and Belle from Disney's iconic Beauty and the Beast) is poised to take the throne. Hunters from Outwest Farms located in Okeechobee, Florida have posted an image showing a massive, near 15-foot, 780 pound alligator they found and killed. According to CNN, the huge reptile was discovered on Saturday on one of the ponds located on a private ranch owned by Outwest Farms owner Lee Lightsey ... They were surprised when they came across this huge alligator instead ... I hate seeing a beautiful dinosaur like that killed.???? #RIP....
