Animation Description: This patient-friendly animation describes the main role of insulin in the human body.
When food is ingested, it travels along the digestive tract where it is broken down into its component nutrients in order to be absorbed into the bloodstream. One such nutrient is glucose, a simple sugar.
Glucose gets absorbed by the stomach and intestines and then enters the bloodstream. It travels through the circulation to all body cells.
Once absorbed into the bloodstream, glucose circulates causing the blood sugar level to rise. An increased level of blood sugar sends a signal to the pancreatic beta cells, which respond by secreting the hormone insulin into the circulation.
Insulin is necessary for glucose to reach and be used by several important target tissues throughout the body. These include the liver, muscle, and adipose tissue. Insulin is necessary to keep blood glucose levels stable in the body.
Circulating insulin binds to specific insulin receptors located on the cell membrane of tissue cells throughout the body.
Upon binding, a signal is sent to the nucleus of the cell, instructing it to transport glucose channels to the cell surface. These channels allow glucose to enter the cell.
Glucose enters the cell through a process called facilitated diffusion.

Diabetes Patient Education
Insulin is the hormone normally made in the pancreas that stimulates the flow of sugar - glucose - from the blood into the cells of the body. Glucose provides the cells with the energy they need to function.
There are two main groups of insulins used in the treatment of diabetes: human insulins and analog insulins, made by recombinant DNA technology.
The concentration of most insulins available in the United States is 100 units per milliliter. A milliliter is equal to a cubic centimeter. All insulin syringes are graduated to match this insulin concentration.
There are four categories of insulins depending on how quickly they start to work in the body after injection:
* Very rapid acting insulin
* Regular, or Rapid acting insulins
* Intermediate acting insulins
* Long acting insulin.
Diabetes Patient Education
* In addition, some insulins are marketed mixed together in different proportions to provide both rapid and long acting effects. Certain insulins can also be mixed together in the same syringe immediately prior to injection.
A very rapid acting form of insulin called Lispro insulin is marketed under the trade name of Humalog.
A second form of very rapid acting insulin is called Aspart and is marketed under the trade name Novolog.
Humalog and Novolog are:
* clear liquids.
* They begin to work 10 minutes after injection,
* peak at 1 hour after injection,
* and last 3-4 hours in the body.
Diabetes Patient Education
* Humalog and Novolog are used as "bolus" insulins to be given 15 minutes before a meal.
* Most patients also need a longer-acting insulin to maintain good control of their blood sugar. Humalog and Novolog can be mixed with NPH, Lente and Ultralente insulins.
* Check your blood sugar level before giving Humalog or Novalog.
* Your doctor or diabetes educator will instruct you in determining your insulin dose based on your blood sugar reading and anticipated meals and exercise.
* Always check the bottle before drawing up the insulin. If the solution is cloudy, discard the bottle.
* If you are mixing Humalog or Novalog with a longer-acting insulin, always draw up the Humalog or Novalog first to maintain the purity and clarity of the Humalog and Novalog solutions.
Another solution of insulin that acts rapidly is called "Regular" or "R" insulin. This insulin does not act as quickly as Humalog or Novalog.
Regular insulin is:
* a clear, colorless liquid.
* It begins to work 30 minutes after injection,
* peaks at 3-5 hours
* and lasts 6-10 hours in the body.

Regular insulin is:
* usually given 30 minutes before a meal.
* It can also be mixed with in the same syringe with longer acting NPH, Lente and Ultralente insulins or given separately immediately after each other.
* Glargine cannot be mixed with it.
Regular insulin is:
* the most stable of all the different types of insulin,
* but unopened regular insulin is best refrigerated.
* Always check the bottle before drawing up the insulin.
* If the solution is cloudy, discard the bottle.

* They may also be given at bedtime, depending on your blood glucose reading.
* They can be mixed in the same syringe with Regular, Lispro and Aspart insulins.
Ultralente is a long-acting insulin.
Ultralente is:
* a cloudy suspension.
* It begins to work 2-8 hours after injection,
* peaks at about 12 hours
* and lasts around 18-24 hours in the body.
Ultralente insulin is:
* often given before breakfast.
* It may also be given before dinner in the evenings or at bedtime, on your doctor's instruction.
* It can be mixed in the same syringe with regular insulin.
* When unopened, it is best stored in the refrigerator.

Insulin is a hormone, produced by the pancreas, which is central to regulating carbohydrate and fat metabolism in the body. Insulin causes cells in the liver, muscle, and fat tissue to take up glucose from the blood, storing it as glycogen inside these tissues.
Insulin stops the use of fat as an energy source by inhibiting the release of glucagon. With the exception of the metabolic disorder diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome, insulin is provided within the body in a constant proportion to remove excess glucose from the blood, which otherwise would be toxic. When blood glucose levels fall below a certain level, the body begins to use stored sugar as an energy source through glycogenolysis, which breaks down the glycogen stored in the liver and muscles into glucose, which can then be utilized as an energy source. As a central metabolic control mechanism, its status is also used as a control signal to other body systems (such as amino acid uptake by body cells). In addition, it has several other anabolic effects throughout the body.

By prescribing diet and exercise, James Anderson, M.D. of Lexington, Kentucky, and colleagues stopped insulin completely in two-thirds of their lean diabetic patients, and reduced the amount of insulin in the other third. Haven't physicians prescribed diabetic diets for years? So what's new? Just this. For over 70 years, traditional treatment for diabetes has been a high fat diet with insulin by injection, or oral administration. Justification for prescribing the fat diet is that it keeps the blood sugar from rising too high after a meal and it prevents too much sugar from spilling into the urine. But the disadvantages of fat diets far outweigh the advantages. Dr. Anderson told his audience what the disadvantages were. The fat diet does not reduce blood sugar, nor the insulin requirement to handle the excess sugar In the blood. In fact, it tends to make the body less sensitive to insulin and induces resistance to it. Elevation of blood fats leads to atherosclerosis and promotes ketosis. Atherosclerotic plaques in the arteries can cause coronary occlusion or stroke. Ketosis is the accumulation of certain chemicals (ketone bodies) in the body tissues and fluids, which can be detected in the urine of poorly controlled diabetics. Other diets that help control diabetes are high protein, high carbohydrate (CHO) and high fiber diets. Insulin is the hormone normally made in the pancreas that stimulates the flow of sugar - glucose - from the blood into the cells of the body. Glucose provides the cells with the energy they need to function.
There are two main groups of insulins used in the treatment of diabetes: human insulins and analog insulins, made by recombinant DNA technology.
The concentration of most insulins available in the United States is 100 units per milliliter. A milliliter is equal to a cubic centimeter. All insulin syringes are graduated to match this insulin concentration.
There are four categories of insulins depending on how quickly they start to work in the body after injection:
* Very rapid acting insulin
* Regular, or Rapid acting insulins
* Intermediate acting insulins
* Long acting insulin.
Diabetes Patient Education
* In addition, some insulins are marketed mixed together in different proportions to provide both rapid and long acting effects. Certain insulins can also be mixed together in the same syringe immediately prior to injection.
A very rapid acting form of insulin called Lispro insulin is marketed under the trade name of Humalog.
A second form of very rapid acting insulin is called Aspart and is marketed under the trade name Novolog.
Humalog and Novolog are:
* clear liquids.
* They begin to work 10 minutes after injection,
* peak at 1 hour after injection,
* and last 3-4 hours in the body.
Diabetes Patient Education
* Humalog and Novolog are used as "bolus" insulins to be given 15 minutes before a meal.
* Most patients also need a longer-acting insulin to maintain good control of their blood sugar. Humalog and Novolog can be mixed with NPH, Lente and Ultralente insulins.
* Check your blood sugar level before giving Humalog or Novalog.
* Your doctor or diabetes educator will instruct you in determining your insulin dose based on your blood sugar reading and anticipated meals and exercise.
* Always check the bottle before drawing up the insulin. If the solution is cloudy, discard the bottle.
* If you are mixing Humalog or Novalog with a longer-acting insulin, always draw up the Humalog or Novalog first to maintain the purity and clarity of the Humalog and Novalog solutions.
Another solution of insulin that acts rapidly is called "Regular" or "R" insulin. This insulin does not act as quickly as Humalog or Novalog.

Diabetes Patient Education
Insulin is the hormone normally made in the pancreas that stimulates the flow of sugar - glucose - from the blood into the cells of the body. Glucose provides the cells with the energy they need to function.
There are two main groups of insulins used in the treatment of diabetes: human insulins and analog insulins, made by recombinant DNA technology.
The concentration of most insulins available in the United States is 100 units per milliliter. A milliliter is equal to a cubic centimeter. All insulin syringes are graduated to match this insulin concentration.
There are four categories of insulins depending on how quickly they start to work in the body after injection:
* Very rapid acting insulin
* Regular, or Rapid acting insulins
* Intermediate acting insulins
* Long acting insulin.
Diabetes Patient Education
* In addition, some insulins are marketed mixed together in different proportions to provide both rapid and long acting effects. Certain insulins can also be mixed together in the same syringe immediately prior to injection.
A very rapid acting form of insulin called Lispro insulin is marketed under the trade name of Humalog.
A second form of very rapid acting insulin is called Aspart and is marketed under the trade name Novolog.
Humalog and Novolog are:
* clear liquids.
* They begin to work 10 minutes after injection,
* peak at 1 hour after injection,
* and last 3-4 hours in the body.
Diabetes Patient Education
* Humalog and Novolog are used as "bolus" insulins to be given 15 minutes before a meal.
* Most patients also need a longer-acting insulin to maintain good control of their blood sugar. Humalog and Novolog can be mixed with NPH, Lente and Ultralente insulins.
* Check your blood sugar level before giving Humalog or Novalog.
* Your doctor or diabetes educator will instruct you in determining your insulin dose based on your blood sugar reading and anticipated meals and exercise.
* Always check the bottle before drawing up the insulin. If the solution is cloudy, discard the bottle.
* If you are mixing Humalog or Novalog with a longer-acting insulin, always draw up the Humalog or Novalog first to maintain the purity and clarity of the Humalog and Novalog solutions.
Another solution of insulin that acts rapidly is called "Regular" or "R" insulin. This insulin does not act as quickly as Humalog or Novalog.

Haven't physicians prescribed diabetic diets for years? So what's new? Just this. For over 70 years, traditional treatment for diabetes has been a high fat diet with insulin by injection, or oral administration. Justification for prescribing the fat diet is that it keeps the blood sugar from rising too high after a meal and it prevents too much sugar from spilling into the urine.
But the disadvantages of fat diets far outweigh the advantages. Dr. Anderson told his audience what the disadvantages were. The fat diet does not reduce blood sugar, nor the insulin requirement to handle the excess sugar In the blood. In fact, it tends to make the body less sensitive to insulin and induces resistance to it. Elevation of blood fats leads to atherosclerosis and promotes ketosis. Atherosclerotic plaques in the arteries can cause coronary occlusion or stroke. Ketosis is the accumulation of certain chemicals (ketone bodies) in the body tissues and fluids, which can be detected in the urine of poorly controlled diabetics.
Other diets that help control diabetes are high protein, high carbohydrate (CHO) and high fiber diets. Protein diets seem to prevent a significant rise In blood sugar, but are "impractical, monotonous, expensive and high in fat," hence are not recommended. http://youtu.be/QUgwOq0SSTs

Insulin does a lot of important things for us. It pulls glucose from the blood and fritters it away into our cells to be burned for energy or stored as glycogen. It prevents hyperglycemic toxicity to neurons, pancreatic cells, the arterial walls and the generation of excessive levels of reactive oxygen species. It even promotes muscle protein synthesis and helps augment muscular hypertrophy, especially following resistance training. Clearly, we need insulin. Obviously, we don’t want to be insulin resistant. We want to be insulin sensitive. But how do we do it?

It is important to understand these are not stand alone conditions, but are all related to one dysfunctional metabolic process. We will discuss the role elevated insulin has in the development of these conditions and why a whole foods based diet is critical to improving the dysfunction.
Dr. Robert Maki is a Naturopathic Doctor and a graduate of Bastyr University in Seattle, WA. Dr. Maki is also a faculty member at Hawthorn University and maintains a private practice in Southern California, which is focused on Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) and other hormonal problems such as Diabetes, thyroid disorders and weight loss. What is Type 1 Diabetes
In type 1 diabetes a person’s pancreas is not able to make enough insulin for the body to
function properly. Type 1 diabetes is considered an autoimmune disease – the body’s

10 years ago today I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Over those 10 years one of the most difficult things that I've had to deal with as being a type 1 hasn't been the multiple blood sugar checks or the 4+ needles I inject myself with daily - it's been dealing with all of the misconceptions and misunderstanding about Type 1 Diabetes.
What is Type 1 Diabetes? Type 1 Diabetes, also known as Juvenile Diabetes, is an autoimmune disease in which the pancreas stops producing insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps your body control the amount of sugar in your blood. Type 1 Diabetes is typically diagnosed in children and young adults under the age of 18. The cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown and it has no cure.
Type 1 diabetes is managed by constant blood sugar monitoring (a prick of the finger to produce a drop of blood that is then placed on a blood glucose test strip for a reading) and insulin therapy. Insulin therapy is the injecting of various types of insulin into the body using either a syringe, pen or pump. Insulin injections are typically done in the stomach area, upper arm or upper thigh area. I myself use 2 different types of insulin like most diabetics; a short acting insulin (the orange vile in the drawing) and a long acting insulin (the purple vile in the drawing). I personally prefer using a syringe and injecting into my stomach/ side.
So let's get into some misconceptions. First of all, NO amount of excessive sugar eating will result in type 1 diabetes. Multiple times I've been eating out in public when a curious child has asked their parents what I'm doing when I'm testing my blood sugar and they've responded to their child with some version of "this is why you don't eat too much candy". It's extremely rude, not to mention completely absurd and it used to really upset me when I was younger. Diabetes in media, thanks to an overall misunderstanding of both type 1 and type 2, has turned into this "glutinous disease" of extreme sugary and unhealthy food consumption which for type 1 diabetes is completely unrelated. That mindset is what makes the many children that have type 1 ashamed of something they've had no control or choice over their entire life.
Secondly, type 1 diabetics CAN eat sugar. If you've ever thought this one you probably are unaware that almost all food has at least a small amount of carbohydrates (sugar) in it. The amount of insulin you inject yourself with is usually determined by the amount of carbohydrates you consume, so if I want to eat an entire cake by myself I would just inject myself with more insulin than I would if I had something like a salad. I'm sure there are a lot more misconceptions about type 1 diabetes but they're the two main ones that have effected me the most other than people's general misunderstanding of type 1 diabetes.
Every type 1 diabetic has run into someone that hasn't understood.
So please, be the parent that tells their curious child what it actually means to be type 1 diabetic and be the adult that understands that a type 1 diabetic child doesn't want to have to do things differently but sometimes they don't have a choice, and that’s ok.

Eugene Fine, M.D. presenting at the 2nd annual Ancestral Health Symposium (AHS12). Abstract: We aim to discuss the rationale behind reducing insulin secretion via a carbohydrate restricted diet (CHORD) as a metabolic therapy in cancer, illustrated by data from our human pilot safety feasibility trial, as well as in vitro studies. Methods: Eligible outpatients had failed or refused greater than 2 standard chemotherapy courses and demonstrated FDG-positive PET scans. Conclusions: Preliminary study suggests safety and feasibility of CHORD in selected patients with advanced cancer. As an awareness of the Syndrome X phenomenon of insulin resistance spread, researchers and clinicians have begun to understand that many of us who are not diabetic still experience insulin resistance. Responsible scientists began to ask questions about what causes it. The discoveries they are now making are nothing short of revolutionary. They not only offer us the power to slow the rate at which our bodies age. They are experimenting with protocols that can, potentially reverse negative conditions from hypertension, insulin resistance to cholesterol imbalances and depression, simply by changing the way you eat and live.
This experience is one I became fascinated with when, several years ago, I made a television documentary in the Southern Hemisphere called To Age or Not To Age. It asked the question, ?Can we slow aging by making simple nutritional changes?? We also wanted to know ?Might it also be possible to reverse age-related degeneration that has already occurred?? And, finally, ?Can these things be verified in medically measurable ways?? We decided to carry out what is known as a base-line study to find out. We sent all participants to have the standard test of medical parameters checked before the project began?from fasting insulin and blood sugar levels through cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure. These were carried out at a hospital which also had an excellent physiology laboratory, where exercise physiologists were able to establish each participant?s VO2Max, body fat percentage and lean body mass to fat ratio.
To my surprise, every participant?including a 50 year old top athlete?showed abnormalities associated with Syndrome X. We then introduced our group to an Insulin Balance way of eating, which I devised. The experiment lasted only 5 weeks. Then we sent all our participants back to the hospital to have their parameters checked again. The results were mind-blowing. We had no idea that, after only 5 weeks of dietary changes, every abnormal medical parameter had normalized, except for cholesterol measurements in one woman, which took another few weeks to normalize.
For me personally, the experiment confirmed yet again that the human body has a phenomenal capacity to heal itself, when given the opportunity to experience transformation at the deepest levels. This is a truth which, for the past four years, I have applied to helping to transform the lives of men and women all over the world, whom I have been mentoring on Cura Romana. The results continue to delight me.

Meridian Valley Lab’s Kraft Prediabetes Profile is a timed test that measures the patient’s insulin response to a measured glucose challenge and return to baseline over a 4-hour period. This test looks at patterns of insulin response rather than a strict cut-off point for glucose. These patterns delineate the severity of insulin resistance, as a patient progresses from normal insulin sensitivity to postprandial hyperinsulinemia to the insulinopenic state found in beta-cell exhaustion. This spectrum of insulin response allows the clinician to identify insulin resistance early in its development. (This holds true even when fasting and 2 hour post-challenge glucose levels are normal and fasting insulin is below 10μIU/mL.) The resulting evaluation of insulin resistance severity can be used to monitor efficacy of treatment.
The Kraft Prediabetes Profile measures patterns of insulin activity after drinking a glucose challenge. Dr. Kraft identified five patterns of insulin response that begins with normal sensitivity and progresses to severe insulin resistance and then finally to an insulinopenic state.
The five patterns of insulin response correspond with the timing of the insulin peak after the glucose challenge. Normally, insulin peaks quickly after a meal (or glucose challenge in this case) and then drops precipitously back to baseline (Pattern I). As insulin resistance becomes more severe, the insulin response to glucose peaks later and later (Patterns II-IIIB). In Pattern IV, insulin is high in the fasting state and rises even further in attempt to keep blood sugar under control. Islet cell exhaustion is illustrated by Pattern V, or insulinopenia, in which the patient’s pancreas is no longer able to produce an adequate amount of insulin.

Dr. Joseph R. Kraft developed and validated the ultimate (and earliest) test for diabetes back in the 1970's. His personal research and exceptional experience as a lifelong pathologist enabled him to link the vast majority of modern heart disease to undiagnosed diabetes. Abstract:
We aim to discuss the rationale behind reducing insulin secretion via a carbohydrate restricted diet (CHORD) as a metabolic therapy in cancer, illustrated by data from our human pilot safety feasibility trial, as well as in vitro studies. Methods: Eligible outpatients had failed or refused greater than 2 standard chemotherapy courses and demonstrated FDG-positive PET scans.
Conclusions: Preliminary study suggests safety and feasibility of CHORD in selected patients with advanced cancer. Disease stability correlated with metabolic ketosis and insulin inhibition, not caloric restriction. Results in this small sample size must be interpreted cautiously but support additional CHORD study for a complementary role with metabolic or cytotoxic therapies.
