Driving through Pahrump on the way to Death valley from Las Vegas. Doesw anyone Local not find it funny that theres Election signs up everywhere ( September 2012) saying Cox and Wanker?
Pahrump has a certain form of independence unlike other destinations in the U.S.
It was 2012 when the citizens of Pahrump voted to disband the Town Board form of government
in favor of becoming an advisory board under the County Commissioners. This plan
will be finalized in 2014 when the necessary elected members terms expire.

Most people do not realize that they pass right through the area of Pahrump on their way to destinations such as Las Vegas. Little do people know that Pahrump and the surrounding Shoshone mountains have a lot to offer when it comes to exploring and sightseeing.
Pahrump was originally inhabited by the Shoshone. Eventually this hot desert was slowly inhabited by American Settlers late 19th century. Pahrump is named after "Water Rock" because of the Artesian Wells which are abundant here. These artesian wells enabled people to introduce Ranch style properties allowing alfalfa, cotton and livestock to be raised.
Let's be honest, I usually come here to buy fireworks. However, something bigger has drawn me to this town this time. Despite the incredibly hot weather I am really excited about visiting some of the Shoshone Caves about 15 miles from Pahrump... but before I do, yes you guessed it.
I'll be picking up some fireworks at my favorite location: Phantom Fireworks!
This place has a great selection and usually offers 2 for 1 deals.
I love coming here in the off season, you can have these firework stores all to yourself!
Pahrump you can say is a little off beat compared to most towns.
For instance, it wasn't until the late 1960's when Pahrump adopted their first telephone service!
There also were not any paved roads in or out of Pahrump at that time.
As time went on, Vegas got more and more popular so the overflow of people eventually started to populate Pahrump. This sudden population led to newly paved roads which allowed Californians to pass through Death Valley straight into Pahrump and so on.
Pahrump is now occupied by about 36,000 people compared to about 2,000 people in the 70s.

Pahrump, Nevada
Pahrump is a census-designated place (CDP) and an unincorporated town in Nye County, Nevada, United States. As of 2010 the population was 36,441, making it the largest settlement in the county.
History
Pahrump was originally inhabited by the Shoshone. It was slowly inhabited by American settlers in the late 19th century. They reportedly chose the name for Pahrump after the original indigenous name Pah-Rimpi, or "Water Rock," so named because of the abundant artesian wells in the valley. Because of the artesian wells, the new inhabitants of Pahrump Valley began a number of large ranch-style holdings, mostly over 1000 acres (4 km²) in size. On these ranches, alfalfa and cotton were grown, and livestock were raised.
Until the 1960s, Pahrump had no telephone service except a radio transmitter phone in a phone booth next to the small market, and there were no paved roads in or out of the Pahrump Valley. However, as Las Vegas grew, real estate speculation became more popular in the area, which led to increased interest in Pahrump. This led to the introduction of telephone service and the construction of a paved highway, from Las Vegas to Pahrump, during the late 1960s. Later, this road (NV 160) was extended from Pahrump northward to US 95, near Amargosa Valley. A second paved road (NV 372) was introduced that went from Pahrump to neighboring Shoshone, California, which provided a link to the Death Valley area, as well as a shorter route to those wishing to travel to Los Angeles or other areas in California. In the fifties and sixties, there was a two room elementary school and the high school students went to Shoshone. In 1974, Pahrump's first high school was constructed.

Death Valley
Death Valley is a desert valley located in Eastern California. It is the lowest, driest, and hottest area in North America.
Death Valley's Badwater Basin is the point of the lowest elevation in North America, at 282 feet (86 m) below sea level. This point is 84.6 miles (136.2 km) east-southeast of Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States with an elevation of 14,505 feet (4,421 m). Death Valley's Furnace Creek holds the record for the highest reliably recorded air temperature in the world, 134 °F (56.7 °C) on July 10, 1913. This has been contested by other weather experts.
Located near the border of California and Nevada, in the Great Basin, east of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Death Valley constitutes much of Death Valley National Park and is the principal feature of the Mojave and Colorado Deserts Biosphere Reserve. It is located mostly in Inyo County, California. It runs from north to south between the Amargosa Range on the east and the Panamint Range on the west; the Sylvania Mountains and the Owlshead Mountains form its northern and southern boundaries, respectively. It has an area of about 3,000 sq mi (7,800 km2). The highest point in Death Valley itself is Telescope Peak in the Panamint Range, which has an elevation of 11,043 feet (3,366 m).

As many know tourism in Nevada is often focused around a trip to Las Vegas; however, what many may not know is that the state of Nevada features a plethora of National Parks, fascinating highways and roadside attractions worth visiting. Come along as we hop in our Camaro rental car exploring as much of Nevada as we possibly can on a three day road trip adventure across the Silver State of America.
Things to do in Nevada Travel Itinerary:
Day 1
1) Picking up our rental car and breakfast in Las Vegas, Nevada
2) Visiting Lake Mead National Recreation Area for a short hike in Nevada
3) Visiting the Hoover Dam in Nevada
4) Black Canyon kayaking tour visiting the Emerald Cave
5) Drove to Mesquite, Nevada to stay overnight
Day 2
1) Visited the Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada exploring Fire Arch Rock, White Domes, Rainbow Vista and Atlatl Rock
2) Road trip on Highway 93 to Alamo, NV
3) Checked in to the Windmill Lodge with a hotel tour of our room
4) Dinner at the Windmill Ridge restaurant eating barbecue ribs, mashed potatoes and peanut butter bar for dessert
Day 3
1) Pahranagat national wildlife refuge to spot birds and walk around in nature
2) ET Fresh Jerky for delicious Alien jerky and to buy alien sunglasses
3) Driving on the Extraterrestrial Highway on our USA road trip (aka Nevada State Route 375)
4) Alien Research Center Area 51 in Hiko, Nevada (unfortunately it was closed)
5) Alien Black Mailbox in Area 51 to communicate with Aliens
6) Visiting Little A'le'Inn in Rachel, Nevada on the Extraterrestrial Highway
7) Touring Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area for sunset

Things to do in Nevada Travel Guide | USA Road Trip 2017 Video Transcript:
Our trip began in Las Vegas, but having already been there before, we wasted no time on the Strip. After a short night’s rest, we grabbed a hearty breakfast, hopped in our rental car, and hit the road for our first stop of the day: Lake Mead.
Hoover Dam is one of the most visited attractions in Nevada with as many as 1 million people taking the tour every year, and even more driving across the dam.
Fun fact: there is enough concrete in Hoover Dam to build a 4 foot wide sidewalk around the Earth at the Equator. That’s a whole lot of concrete!
Kayaking in Black Canyon was the highlight of the day. We lucked out with blue skies, calm waters, and the scenery was pretty spectacular - especially once we entered the canyon.
Halfway up stream we took a break from kayaking and went on a short hike.
We also stopped at the Emerald Cave, which gets it’s name from the bright emerald green colour reflected in the water.
We had an hour’s journey to reach the Valley of Fire that morning, and it was a very leisurely drive down some scenic stretches of road. We knew we were getting closer to the park when we noticed the landscape colours started becoming more saturated.
Once we entered Valley of Fire State Park, the fun began. This park is known for its rock formations, panoramic vistas, and hiking trails, so there was no shortage of things to see and do.
Back on the road, we hit our first stop on the ET Highway: ET Fresh Jerky! This is an alien-themed shop selling everything from martian soda to alien sunglasses, so we used this as an opportunity to load up on snacks.
After stopping for photos at the ET Highway marker which is covered in stickers, we journeyed on to the Alien Research Centre, which is pretty hard to miss considering they have a giant metal alien standing guard on a hill.
Out front, we spotted a UFO-towing pick-up truck and a green alien welcoming earthlings, while inside we were surrounded by Area 51 warning signs and all sorts of alien-themed souvenirs.
And then it was time to turn around, drive back to Vegas, and fly back home,.
A surprise addition to our Nevada travel guide was visiting Red Rock Canyon, which is just a 20-minute drive from the Vegas Strip.
Our final thoughts? There are way more things to do in Nevada than just Las Vegas and we’re glad we got to experience a mix of nature and quirky attractions on this mini USA road trip! The Yosemite Valley ring road follows the banks of the Merced River, which shifts in character as it thunders from the valley walls, before gently winding across the valley floor. The ring road is dotted with trailheads that lead to 800 miles of hiking trails. The Four Mile Trail climbs the valley’s southern wall to two of Yosemite’s great outlooks, Glacier Point and Washburn Point. Further along the ring road is the trailhead for The Mist Trail, which offers stunning views of Vernal and Nevada Falls.
For thousands of years, the Ahwaneechee had villages throughout this valley, but it was at the base of Yosemite Falls where their great chief resided. Take the one-hour hike to the lower falls, or spend the day climbing all the way to the upper falls.
To the north of Yosemite Valley, is Tioga Road, one of the USA’s most scenic highways. Fill your lungs with alpine air at Olmsted Point, refresh yourself by the waters of Tenaya Lake, then spend the day at Tuolumne Meadow, the traditional summer hunting grounds of the Ahwaneechee.

Downtown Las Vegas, centered around Fremont Street, is the historic alternative to the Las Vegas Strip. It's where it all began, when it comes to gambling, booze and broads... and spontaneous brides...
When Scott and I traveled to Las Vegas to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary, we already knew we'd be headed to downtown Las Vegas for a renewal of vows ceremony at the Graceland Wedding Chapel with Las Vegas Elvis. But it was Scott's brother, Stephen Conklin, who lives in Las Vegas, who suggested we also experience the historic downtown at night. Can't deny the suggestion of a local! So on Anniversary Eve, he whisked us away from The Strip for a fun night out around Fremont Street.
We started with dinner at Oscar's Steakhouse in the Plaza Hotel. The restaurant, owned by former mayor Oscar Goodman, sports the slogan "Beef, Booze and Broads" and features matching old-timey atmosphere, with charismatic waiters, huge portions and a view of glitzy and sparkly Fremont Street.
The insider stories of the staff at Oscar's were only matched by our own local guide, Stephen, who seemed to know the thrilling history of every place and supplied us with plenty of inspiring gambler stories ("...he used his last dollar and won a million dollars on a slot machine..."). Thank you so much, Stephen!
We gave ourselves the full Fremont Street Experience, with the overhead light show, live cover band, cocktails from Binion's and finally ducking into several of the classic casinos. We did however skip the zip line and the slide through the shark tank. Instead, I won a $1000 in a $2 spin on a Wheel of Fortune slot machine inside the Golden Nugget!
We closed out the night at the more modern casino The D, where the female card dealers alternate between dealing cards and dancing on pedestals - and where the male bartenders entertain with their flair bartending skills. A special thanks to Eddie Razo for making the most entertaining Cosmo I've ever had - and letting me film the process.
Actually, we probably closed out the night at a bar or blackjack table in the Cosmopolitan Hotel back on the Strip. But who can really remember? All I know is that we had a ridiculous amount of fun that night and still made it to our renewal wedding at Graceland Chapel the next day on time... (In the video, this is in reverse order to give it a nicer visual flow from day to night. Creative license and all.)

Finally, Germany, our last stop. :)
Yadi and Yiou picked us up from the Dortmund airport and drove all the way up to Flandersbach, our Airbnb place. Yiou even cooked us an awesome dinner. The next day, we travelled to Cologne, where we visited Cologne Cathedral, the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe and has the second-tallest spires and largest façade of any church in the world. It is truly a masterpiece of epic proportion.
We love German bakeries. It made our heart beat faster looking at the breads, cakes and pastries on display. One particular favorite is roggenmischbrot – a light rye and wheat sourdough loaf. It is soft, tasty and heavenly delicious. :P
Borussia Dortmund has the highest average attendance of any football club worldwide and Germany's biggest stadium. Their supporters are renowned for being fiercely loyal. Their chants inspire the players and the stadium is definately an intimidating venue for any opponents. It was a magnificent experience, hearing the singing and cheering from the 80,000 seater Westfalenstadion. The home team came away with a 5-1 resounding victory against Freiburg.
Yadi and Yiou, thanks for being our tour guide and translator. It was pure fun hanging out with you guys, till the next one soon! :D

It was 2012 when the citizens of Pahrump voted to disband the Town Board form of government
in favor of becoming an advisory board under the County Commissioners. This plan
will be finalized in 2014 when the necessary elected members terms expire.

Most people do not realize that they pass right through the area of Pahrump on their way to destinations such as Las Vegas. Little do people know that Pahrump and the surrounding Shoshone mountains have a lot to offer when it comes to exploring and sightseeing.
Pahrump was originally inhabited by the Shoshone. Eventually this hot desert was slowly inhabited by American Settlers late 19th century. Pahrump is named after "Water Rock" because of the Artesian Wells which are abundant here. These artesian wells enabled people to introduce Ranch style properties allowing alfalfa, cotton and livestock to be raised.
Let's be honest, I usually come here to buy fireworks. However, something bigger has drawn me to this town this time. Despite the incredibly hot weather I am really excited about visiting some of the Shoshone Caves about 15 miles from Pahrump... but before I do, yes you guessed it.
I'll be picking up some fireworks at my favorite location: Phantom Fireworks!
This place has a great selection and usually offers 2 for 1 deals.
I love coming here in the off season, you can have these firework stores all to yourself!
Pahrump you can say is a little off beat compared to most towns.
For instance, it wasn't until the late 1960's when Pahrump adopted their first telephone service!
There also were not any paved roads in or out of Pahrump at that time.
As time went on, Vegas got more and more popular so the overflow of people eventually started to populate Pahrump. This sudden population led to newly paved roads which allowed Californians to pass through Death Valley straight into Pahrump and so on.
Pahrump is now occupied by about 36,000 people compared to about 2,000 people in the 70s.
