North Potomac is a census-designated place and an unincorporated area in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States.
North Potomac was created in 1988 from the peripheral fringes of Gaithersburg and Rockville, and lies parallel to the Potomac River. North Potomac shares ZIP codes with Gaithersburg and Rockville. The United States Postal Service defines North Potomac to encompass only zip code 20878.
Major shopping areas include Travilah Square and Traville Gateway. Travilah Square, long the area's only shopping center, is now facing tough competition from a new breed of new urbanism lifestyle centers, which contain a multitude of retailers, from Giant Food to new boutique chains.
One notable business includes the Potomac Horse Center which was founded in the late 1950s and has since become the premiere equestrian center located in the area.
North Potomac is located in west central Montgomery County, northeast of the Potomac River. It is conveniently located 3 miles from Gaithersburg and 20 miles from Washington, DC. The geographic location can be viewed at the Official North Potomac Map.

North is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. North is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of south and is perpendicular to east and west.
The word north is related to the Old High German nord, both descending from the Proto-Indo-European unit ner-, meaning "down" (or "under"). (Presumably a natural primitive description of its concept is "to the left of the rising sun".)
The Latin word borealis comes from the Greek boreas "north wind, north", which, according to Ovid, was personified as the son of the river-god Strymon, the father of Calais and Zetes. Septentrionalis is from septentriones, "the seven plow oxen", a name of Ursa Maior. The Greek arktikos is named for the same constellation, and is the derivation of the English word "Arctic".
Other languages have sometimes more interesting derivations. For example, in Lezgian, kefer can mean both 'disbelief' and 'north', since to the north of the Muslim Lezgian homeland there are areas formerly inhabited by non-Muslim Caucasian and Turkic peoples. In many languages of Mesoamerica, "north" also means "up". In Hungarian the word for north is észak, which is derived from éjszaka ("night"), since above the Tropic of Cancer, the Sun never shines from the north.

Georgetown Washington D.C. - Historic Neighborhood, Commercial, and Entertainment district 2015 Georgetown is an historic neighborhood, commercial, and entertainment district located in northwest Washington, D.C., situated along the Potomac River. Founded in 1751 in the Province of Maryland, the port of Georgetown predated the establishment of the federal district and the City of Washington by 40 years. Georgetown remained a separate municipality until 1871, when the United States Congress created a new consolidated government for the whole District of Columbia. A separate act passed in 1895 specifically repealed Georgetown's remaining local ordinances and renamed Georgetown's streets to conform with those in the City of Washington. The primary commercial corridors of Georgetown are the...
Rainy days are perfect for a hike to a waterfall. Today I'm at Cunningham Falls State Park, located in the Catoctin Mountains just west of Thurmont, Frederick County, Maryland. The park sits adjacent to Catoctin Mountain Park. I start the hike at the lake access area and take the short and easy Lower Falls Trail directly to Cunningham Falls. The falls had pretty decent flow due to two days of rain; however, prior to this rain event the area had been experiencing a severe drought. So even with the rain the water levels are slightly down. I still got some good views of the falls. After checking out the cascade, I head up the Cliffs Trail. This slightly more challenging trail winds up a rocky ridge, passing many large rock features and massive boulders. Near the top of the mountain th...
